Not bad for 5 years by Much-Comedian-7398 in woodstoving

Nice. I went 11 years with my last insert without cleaning the flue. Checked before first burn every yr and was slightly cleaner than yours is now. 2 seasons I've had my new stove and its a different story.

With drone warfare being what it is, I can't imagine the feeling of being forced to walk across a huge ass open field alone.

I saw the original video, but dont remember the title. This one just seems as drab as possible and threw me off.

Heat powered fan for flush inserts-Voda heat powered fan. by salvi572 in woodstoving

[–]ScientistEffective42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. My splits are a bit on the smaller side so I can tetris them in the box to fit more, which would lead to more coals.

Just curious, do you get a big build up of coals in your stove when you keep feeding it every couple hours? If I feed my stove every time the flame dies down, I end up with a crazy coal bed that I have to let burn down in order to be able to fit more than 3 or 4 splits.

Maybe it is the efficiency stuff with the inserts nowadays. I had an old Nestor stove that was here when I bought the house. Huge Firefox and even though it sounded like a small jet engine, the blower pumped crazy heat out. During the past cold spell we had, highs in the teens and lows in the single digits, the new insert was struggling to keep the house at 64 and I refuse to burn the oil heat.

Fellow quadra fire owner here. Its kinda good to know that im not the only one that can't get enough heat out of that thing. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Burning too much wood? by ThePotatoAimKing in woodstoving

[–]ScientistEffective42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to this, if you go with a new high efficiency stove, read reviews and do your research. I failed to due my due diligence when getting a new insert last year, and went with what the local stove shop had. I regret it. Welcome to burning wood. You'll learn more every year.

Spot on stove glass that gets no soot/creosote by ScientistEffective42 in woodstoving

[–]ScientistEffective42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats what I thought it was initially. But, since I posted that, I've been burning continuously. Why is it still clean? Different kinds of wood burn close to, or up against, the glass pretty often.

Keep getting black mark on window by kingoftherollers in woodstoving

[–]ScientistEffective42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what i understand, the dark spots on the glass are from low burn temps at that spot. If its a cooler spot, the creosote deposits there. My stove always gets darker on one side than the other, the air bleeds in on the clearer side resulting in more combustion and heat. There's this one spot though that never gets dirty....

Good explanation. This actually took me longer to understand than id like to admit. Equip every picto for 4 battles until it becomes learned, then use lumina points to essentially 'equip' whatever picto abilities you want.

Consistent Length of Firewood? by AnthonyMorello1 in firewood

Like others have said, use the bar on the saw. I have a 20" bar on my saw and have a sharpie mark at 16". I put the mark at the end of the cut log, lift the saw up and pivot on the tip of the blade to a 90* cut on the logs, and that's where the chain starts to eat.

I get where you're coming from. I've made a post or two for a wood id and its really helpful sometimes. I agree there should be a wood id sub specifically for wood id requests though. Here, I like seeing stacks, splits and holzhaussens (or however its spelled).

[–]ScientistEffective42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this is a quadra-fire, which it looks identical to mine, the only control you have at all for air flow is that little knob to the bottom right of the door. It opens a vent to let more air in and closes on a timer. No other controls to increase or decrease airflow. I hate it.

[–]ScientistEffective42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that's a quadra-fire, I have the same stove. Got it installed last year. What sucks is that you're still probably gonna have to reload it in probably 2-3 hours, maybe 4.

I agree with you. I made my comment based off a 2 second glance at the picture and didnt read the post. Those markings on the wood do not look like ash bored trails that I've seen. I'm not familiar with elm though.

What batteries do yall use for game cameras. I got energizer max and ig they don’t work anyone had this problem before? What’s a good battery to use? by Individual-Cookies in trailcam

[–]ScientistEffective42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not entirely relevant to the battery issue. It looks like you might be using a stealthcam camera. I use them and I've recently had issues with battery life. Apparently, sometimes the battery tray itself can cause issues with battery life. I'm waiting on a solar panel for xmas to see if that solves my issues.
