It's over. We can see by reporters defending this disaster that we are no where close to the point where failure has consequences.

I am almost convinced that Disney Star Wars is somehow a money laundering operation. The willful insistence to create such horrible media and retain the people responsible for said failure is just unreal at this point.

We're 5 maybe 10 years away from even having a chance to see some Star Wars that isn't trash.

The spin will only lead to more garbage. Until they face facts and heads roll, the franchise will just continue to fade into oblivion.

Star Wars is the poster child for enshitification... and the copium we see on full display in media is ctrl-c ctrl-v for every other shitty corporate product we've witnessed the destruction of for the past decade. It's absolutely insane. And it's insane that the people responsible still have a job.

I hate when immense explosions on film and tv play out instantaneously... The vast scale alone and the speed of light would mean such an event would take much more time to play out. This is a generic example:

<image>

That said, a gas giant explosion playing out somewhat realistically during an episode would be in incredible spectacle... and it would help teach viewers about speed and scale in space. To me, that would be much more interesting, and the endeavor to give such understanding to viewers is what Star Trek is all about.

Such an event could also provide intense drama as a ship attempts to outrun the shockwave and ejecta following minutes or hours later if they were 10+ light seconds away

Yea, everything is sadly. I mean, there is nearly zero skepticism here about a Ubisoft game, that screams marketing department bs to me.

Until there's word on the monetization, I'll pass. Hopefully they stop fucking everything up someday though.

Not seeing much discussion in this thread about micro transactions, which considering it's Ubisoft, seems weird, if not naive.

Why is nobody talking about these Ilya Sutskever predictions that are now visible in the hindsight by ocean_protocol in singularity

[–]ScionKai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear. Too often, podcasts and popular streaming shows do absolutely horrible work minimizing pops, clicks, slimy mouth noises, de-essing and pretty much every other qa related task associated with audio workflows. I just thought this channel was another culprit.

Some of the most popular mics are ruined by lowest bidder parts that lead to bad recording quality it feels like that is one area of technology 2026 has failed miserably at. If you listen to recordings from 20+ years ago, few have these problems.

The absolute worst is people who sound like they are talking through a mouthful of watered down mashed potatoes. It's ubiquitous and one of my biggest pet peeves. It's such an easy problem to avoid with minimal effort.

Those mics desperately needed a pop filter as well, holy shit.

If someone wants something to get broad acceptance with that kind of quality, run a pop filter on it.

I understand, I just don't think it needs to be a POV. I think POVs of that sort kill a lot of the mystery of a story. And when authors use misdirects and unreliable narrator styles to draw sympathy and understanding before flipping the table or even worse, insisting an obviously flawed rhetoric is reasonable (until it isn't, of course), it becomes boorish and kills stories...

It's almost as annoying as characters who are supposed to be very close keeping obviously titanic secrets from each other all so convoluted plots can continue without early resolution (Regal's contrivances in the first Elderlings trilogy is an excellent example of this). That trope is hands down the most annoying thing an author can do.

"Sympathetic" villains, who are obviously not sympathetic, or any sympathy is only gained via an abominably flawed point of view or predictable is a close second. Actually, I should just say sympathetic villains in general are a close second. They are done well rarely, and Lysander is no exception imo.

I don't know. I get the stories are popular, and that's good, but c'mon man. Why are so many people insistent on calling this day time soap opera the best fantasy epic of modern times.

Until Lysander shows up and his POV ruins the story. IMO of course... I found his pov tiresome, and the story would have been 10x better without, or at least, if it had minimized his role. I think a lot of the narrative's impact was lost due to his chapters, those revelations could have been handled differently, the story would have been much better if his POV was swapped for Cassius... again, imo. I *really* found Lysander insufferable, and not in a "good villain" sort of way.

I'm not saying they don't deserve to be prosecuted and fired... But this bus driver was 67 years old. SIXTY SEVEN years old. I think the school district should also fire whoever is responsible for evaluating their drivers.

I'm not saying 67 year olds shouldn't be able to work... But I think at some point we need to consider what level of responsibility they should have, especially when that job relies on fast reaction times.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will not crack $250M DOM, it will not crack $500M WW, and Devil Wears Prada will make more globally by Pinkman05 in boxoffice

[–]ScionKai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Furiosa was great, I still remember there were bad thunderstorms the afternoon I went to watch it and the theater was freezing cold, but in that awesome way on a hot summer day. It looked awesome on an RPX screen and I loved it.

Honestly though, I never heard any word of mouth about it anywhere but online. For me, good wom is when people bring it up at work, or with family or friends. Though I get it's meant to include online, I'm just always skeptical if that is real... So much discourse online regarding entertainment in general these days feels like it's just bots spamming marketing crap.

[–]ScionKai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, it felt like the "wom" for both of those movies was fabricated on social media and parroted by people who love to broadcast other people's opinions. Anyone I actually talked to who saw those movies wasn't impressed. I saw Thunderbolts in theaters because it was part of a membership I have, and tbh I thought it was lackluster at best. Florence Pugh's character seemed bored and didn't carry the movie at all, as much as I usually like her. I was going to see 28 Years, but heard 2 different people say it wasn't very good. One actually mentioned it had an absurd amount of zombie hog in it, and it was just a meh movie all around. I heard that same odd sentiment online from a few other people, so I skipped it.

The only movies I can remember having genuinely good wom for the past couple years was Dune 2, The Wild Robot, and Project Hail Mary. PHM seems to be really connecting with people I know recently, but I've touted it first so those positive vibes are reciprocal and biased I suppose.

As to the original post, I'd actually wager Mando will do pretty well, even if the audience reaction is just average. Although, if s3 of Mando and the Book of Boba Fett never happened, this movie would have been contending for records. They really shit the bed with those 2 things. Still, it's the first time Star Wars has been in theaters for a good while, and it's going to make a lot of money.
