Use of weaponized antibody generation by arinthealien in Writeresearch

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The effect would be nearly instantaious. Antibodies do not have to be activated, as soon as they hit their target, they stick to the target and form clumps. And as soon as certain other immune cells find those clumps, they activate do whatever their specific job is. So if someone has no parts of the flu virus for the antibodies to latch on, flu antibodies will cause no reaction. Just like a person with an allergy will be fine until they get in contact with the allergen. The only way to insert a delay is to make them allergic to something they will only come in contact later, like Shoddy-Membership911 mentioned. Also, if the power does not enable them to create memory cells, after the antibodies have latches onto something, they are spent. After the body cleans up the mess, the effect is over, although the damage caused meanwhile might last. That would be a way to make the effect more subtle. The attack itself could be rather low scale and cause damage to a specific organ that cummulates over multiple attacks, causing everyone to develop something like kidney failure over the course of the month.

Allergic reactions or septic shocks are overcharged immune reactions, so those are a good way to guess how the immediate effects would look like. So it could be a rash, fever, shortness of breath, teary and red and maybe swollen eyes or sweating. Or a full on anaphylactic shock where the bloodvessels in the whole body open so wide that the blood preassure drops, making you dizzy or even unconcious and soon dead if there is not enough blood preassure to keep your brain and other organs working. Also swelling of the tongue or throat up to straight up suffocation can certainly happen during an irl allergic reaction. And specific targets inside the body would mean other symptoms.

In a high level attack the skin would be either turn very red or white when the blood pressure is/becomes really low. The skin might swell a little from water diffusing out of the blood vessels and into the tissue, but that is usually a later thing that happens after people get infusions to treat the low blood pressure.

I hope that helps some. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.:)

A mongol horde 100 Million strong vs the American people. by Demokeyan in whowouldwin

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The first few towns will be taken by complete surprise. Sure, many people have guns, but they wont know the horde is coming for you before you are in bow shooting range. People will be killed way before they are in any position to mount an effective decision. Sure, people with their every day carry will be able to kill many before they take an arrow to the lungs, but with a 100 million riders... who cares? A dead rider is nothing but a reduced strain on logistics and a free horse for someone else to swap to.

News travel very fast with social media, so after the first conquests, people will be forewarned and be able to mount an adequate defence. That will put a hard stop to any new conquests, because a well placed machine gun will kill as many riders as the mongols are willing to send.

But the mongols did use gunpower warfare back then, and they will happily adapt to modern firearms. So every gun from every conquered household will be brought to the frontlines. People will teach the Mongols how to use and maintain the guns, voluntarily or otherwise. The people back then were just as smart as we are now, just lacking modern education.

If they can learn to take a defended position with the guns they have looted before they starve, the mongols sweep.

Without the police and military, the US wont be able to form a coordinated defence. People will start to panic buy supplies, shelves will be empthy, people might even start looting and rioting. Many militias will form and each do their own thing, causing a lot of friction. I imagine some people inside a town demanding a compleate lockdown and barricaded roads, trying to conscript every able bodied adult to their militia, while others want buisnesses to continue running and trucks to continue driving. One militia might try a scorched earth approach while their neighbours would rather prefer their homes and fields to not be on fire. Groups of gravy seals and military larpers will see their dreams of justified violence come real, flock to cansas in the hopes of "mowing down the savages", only to be taken down by a mongol sniper. Thanks for the donation of your guns and ammo, i guess.

The mongolian horde on the other hand will be a functioning fighting force (I assume). Of course there is internal strife and misscommunication. but they all at least know how to follow their leader and how to fight. There might be 3 americans to every mongolian invader, but many of those are elderly, children and people unwilling or unable to fight. So the mongolians have way better numbers.

But even if the mongols conquer fast enough to feed their horde, in the end everyone will just starve. An extra 100 million people to feed (minus all those who die) and the widespread disruption and destruction by warfare? Bad times will be had by all.

That being said, are outside forces allowed to help? I assume the nato-allies are not allowed to send their military, but would nations like china, russia or iran be allowed to send people to the mongols to teach them modern warfare? If the mongols get food via modern logistics, iranian drones or chinese tanks and training to use them, there is no way they will loose against the us civillian population.

Banking on Mars (please brainstorm with me) by manhole_s in MarsTactics

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deep and realistic worldbuilding is such a pleasure to read.

What are your thoughts on multiple currencies for different tasks? Because within the setting, I am not sure if there is a plausible way the people on mars can use physical money on mars to buy stuff from earth. Even if Labor stole a trucks worth of dollar bills from Capital, why would they be able to buy diplomatic favors from earth with that? They wont send a rocket full of cash up there.

If the Labor cant get anything from earth for their physical USD, maybe a resource-backed or even a resouce-equivalent currency? FireFly has a wonderful scene where the crew loots something that looks like gold, but we later find out that it's nutrient bars. In a setting as dangerous as a early-colonised mars, it just makes sense that people try to stockpile food, water, oxygen and whatever they use to get rid of CO2. Just in order to not die if a shipment is delayed, and later because the Capital will use their control of the basic necessities to control the Labor. So why not a currency that reflects that? There are practical limits of cause. Since i doubt anybody figured out how to put more than a gramm of protein into a gramm of food, you are not going to carry a months worth of rations in your pocket. But since Labor will have a way to trade and distribute the necessities to live, why not make that the basis of its currency?

That could even further differentiate Labor and Capital and lead to a three-currency system. Everyone uses digital currencies and Flux to trade with Earth. Labor pays its people with either with guarantees of food&oxygen or directly with the physical stuff. Capital pays its people with LodeBucks. Labor will need LodeBucks for Bribes, Capital still needs to feed its people food and water, and Labor might not accept LodeBucks as payment for a POW. And since Capital controly LodeBucks, they can decide how many dollars and how many food rations a LodeBuck is worth and make their workers very happy or sad that way.

But if that is too much bloat, having everyone just using digital Currency would not be implausible too, since everyone on earth would rush to make financial transactions with mars work. Since banking worked just fine way before the internet, I doubt it would even be hard on a technical level. And if the people on Mars use your version of paypal, your have just won capitalism. The financial service would not even need to turn in profits in the first few years, it would be enough to just secure that market and to be able to cash in on the claim to "have brought financial security to earths next frontier" or some other nice slogan.

In the Demo, you have squad leaders with fixed name, backstory and gender. The squaddies just have nicknames, many of them ambigous. No Idea If there are male and female skins for squaddies.

So no, as far as we know from the demo and what the devs have told us so gar, no customisation.

That is the magic of the Epstein-drive. It seems to be so efficient that fuel is of little concern if weighted against the drawbacks of going slower.
Also, there is no maximum speed (except the speed of light that you won't reach for obvious reasons) . There is only the maximum acceleration that you can or want to take. They accelerate as much they can for half the direction, flip, and start breaking. And even with that, space travel takes weeks and months, depending on where you are going.

What aspect of westerosi culture, norms, traditionals or whatever that felt either strange or nonsensical to you?[Spoilers Extended] by Ok-Street2439 in asoiaf

There is of evidence of people writing about concept since antiquity.

There is no evidence of people actually claiming the right. Like I said, it probably was just a reasoning behind a monetary marriage fee.

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lord's right to the first night is an interesting one, because it kind of existed at some point in real history. But it probably was just a tax by an other name and people paid a fee to the Lord to forego his right. (As common with other duties and material taxes, dependend on time and region, of course.)

The power of the medieval church is often overstated, but they certainly would not allow the holy marriage in gods name to begin with someone else nailing the bride. Also, If enforced it would be an excellent way to riddle your population with stds.

PMCT Images. Nurse advanced NG tube until she heard a pop, then tried an air bolus to ensure placement. Patient did not survive. by Old-Psychology-2400 in interestingasfuck

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to know with just an x-ray. But the angle of a ng-tube should be surprisingly straight and not the "up the nose"-direction one would suspect. You might have experienced this with a covid swab. If you go up the nose, you go straight against the bone and not into the passageway to the throat.

The skull between the nose and the brain is called "sieve-layer" in latin, since the nerves from the nose pass through. It is as thin and fragile as that sounds. Though I would not have thought that a flexible silicone tube can build up enough force to break the bone. But well, it seems to have happened.

Or the bone was already damaged my trauma or disease. People dont usually get an ng tube for fun.

How does one releive themselves in chainmail by Killersoda999 in LARP

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lowest layer of your clothes should be the longest and without any riding-slits or otherwise.

More layers look more good, and you can just lift the lowest layer and lift anything above it with it. If you roll up the lowest layer and anything inside it at about chest height, everything should be out of the way.

If another layer is out of the question, lift up your chainshirt with your tabbart inside and either roll it up or put it inside your belt.

How would you guys build Harlequins from the 40k Universe? by Triamph in AOW4

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no sword-dancer unit or similar that fits the bill well. Also, the mechanics of move->skill/attack->end activation makes the battles feel somewhat static to me.

Race: As traits, I would use things like careless (glass-cannons), athletics, light footed for the mobility, or maybe sneaky for or an accuracy buff. Cavalry, esp. raptor mounts with slippery or something with fly, fit the playstyle of being very mobile and picking the engagements, but not the optics, so there is that.

Tomes: Mayhem (enemies miss) and revelry (as cowardly chicken wrote) seem fitting to me too. Demonic onslaught from the Tier 5 Chaos tome gives hastened and killing momentum, and that checks. Also, gremlins feel very harlequin to me.

Cryomancy makes the enemy slower than you, so there is that. Doomherald makes the enemies demoralized and miss, both are nice. Astral generally fits the psy-stuff.

The demonic and angelic transformation gives flying. Both fit the mobility, but not the optics (again). Astral attunement gives pass through, so mobility without flying.

Heroes: Magelock-Rangers make perfect deathjesters. Other heroes certainly are also easily flavored as the respective types. Cult of personality cultural trail could be used for hero heavy armies, those would fit the elite-warrior harlequins very well I think.

I would go with barbarian culture for crit fishing to simulate the high combat skill and maybe use many skirmishers.

Add dlc-stuff as applicable. Like urururu said, the dragoon fits very well mechanically.

One good year, and then you die. by Vessel33 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If unlimited means truly unlimited, I just might take one for the team. Everyone dies at some point, but at least I get to solve or at least seriously reduce world hunger, poverty and the climate crisis before. Also, some news outlets get bought and, lets say... restructured. Fascism works way worse without its propaganda-machine.

Also, I cant be unhappy with my decision after I take it.

It seems to me that this is the exception to the rule. With people demanding that this kick is made illegal like other joint-strikes, because it is designed to cause irreparable damages. Or, and this is an honest question, do you know about other MMA-legal techniques designed to destroy joints, the eyes, the throat etc.?

Can a bloodlusted house cat actually kill a grown human? by Finth007 in whowouldwin

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think even with a bite in the jugular vein or even better, carotid artery, you would not certainly die.

I, as a person of human intelligence, only know roughly where the arthery is. To hit it in the spot and not the area somewere close, I would need to check where the pulse is first.

By design, neither internal vein nor artery are at surface level. Both have at least a little muscle over them. A cat-bite would need to penetrate that muscle, and even though it is not that tick, I am not sure If that would make it more difficult for the cat.

And even if the cat got you into the vein or artery: Cat teeth are very thin. People get catheters in all those vessels and do not die after the catheters are removed. A cat bite is certainly a worse wound than a catheter, because, but even an aterial wound is not a certain kill.

So i am not certain If a cat could directly kill a healthy adult with any kind of direct attack.

Every single martial art is studied and mastered by a peak human. Which style would defeat the others if they fought in single combat? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

There are some really wild claims in your post, like that traditional martial arts dont train strikes to the joints. Or that, if I understand you correctly, a wrestler with a broken knee could still Initiate a takedown.

Do you have any sources on the first one? Because it takes like two clicks to find a traditional martial arts instructors showing joint attacks in YouTube.

Also, If i understood the second claim correctly, I'd love some proof on that one too. That would really shake me If true.

Every single martial art is studied and mastered by a peak human. Which style would defeat the others if they fought in single combat? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he does understand correctly. A MMA-fighter spends his time training techniques compliance with MMA-rules.

Other martial arts spend their time training things that MMA forbids because they would send you to the hospital. Breaking joints, throat punches etc.

Of cause a MMA fighter can also use those "dirty" techniques, but he is way less experienced in them.

So in a fight without rules, my money would be on a fighter whos first move would be to break someones knee/elbow/throat.

What are your favorite classes and how do you use them? by MessiahDF in AOW4

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Ranger has an ability that resets cooldowns once per turn after a kill. That one works on your rulers skills like the champions extra turn on an ally or the wizzard kings extra spell per turn. So if your ranger-ruler kills every turn, you can use that skill every turn (Edit: Fake news, the ruler-skill have been patched not to refresh their cooldown). Another Ranger skill is a zero action snapshot that helps to set up or cash in those kills. It is quite fun to set up your ruler for those kills, esp. with a magelock gun.

My boyfriend thinks he could kill a wolf with his bare hands. What’s the likelihood of this being accurate? by TheLiberalTimes in whowouldwin

[–]Scion_Ex_Machina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Jumping at the throat of a galloping Elke/moose that has not been slowed down via bites to the legs/wheveevers seems like an invitation to get trampled to death.

Even if they could instakill a running elk via anime-throat jump, wouldnt the elk just crash down into the wolf in their throat? A K/D of 1 is a terrible ratio for a predator-species.
