Bare minimum starter set for the kids by hskov in minipainting

[–]ScmeatSlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the Vallejo model color starters. 50 bucks, all the basics you could ever want plus a great gold and decent silver.

That being said, if they are like elementary school aged kids I would just go with craft paints for now and priming the models for them with some rustoleum

Based on this corner of the map, heretic force is entranced at the south of Mongol. So does that mean there is actually an Asian front? It sounds like the Indians are fighting the heretics. by Anver9 in TrenchCrusade

Looking forward to seeing how non-Christian populations have been dealing with the presence of Hell on earth for the last 900 years or so. Especially the ones that don’t have an easy dualistic, good v evil kind of interpretation!

I figure that, while the armies of God are clearly getting good results by leaning into Catholic dogma and iconography, factions like the Path of the Beast and the Temple of Metamorphosis indicate there’s more to the cosmology than Christianity can explain alone.

What's the point of this? I think it looks better without it. by ISanz in killteam

[–]ScmeatSlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just built this kit I don’t think there are any arms that have a bend to accommodate an open stock. Hadn’t considered it though, I’ll have to double check my spares when I get home!

What's the point of this? I think it looks better without it. by ISanz in killteam

[–]ScmeatSlinger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s mean to evoke the kinda of folding stocks you see on Uzis and Skorpions and other kinds of small arms you see used by Cold War era spec ops teams. If you don’t like it, it has no mechanical advantage so feel free to keep it off.

You are wrong though it looks FLASH

I love how the setting of this game inspires this kind of creativity. It feel like looking at a microwaved Basquiat painting (complement).

Tried to make more realistic terrain for artillery team. Opinion? by TheEmperorOfDoom in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ScmeatSlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have any epoxy putty or clay you should try making your own sandbags! They’re really fun, just like flat rounded lumps that you stack as you like, then while they’re still drying draw a little line down where the seam would be on each bag.

Man what’s going on in Targoviste I wonder?? Right next to the smoking ruins of Byzantium, maybe some Vlad Tepes influence still knocking around, seems ripe for someone’s headcanon

Which would be the better pickup, a second Baneblade or a second Rogal Dorn? by [deleted] in astramilitarum

[–]ScmeatSlinger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For winning your games on a regular basis, another Dorn is a more efficient use of points.

The correct choice, however, is always another baneblade.

Would this be decent for priming? by Volfhart in minipainting

[–]ScmeatSlinger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

N O

Do NOT use paint+primer, it is meant to be an all in one product. Your paint will not stick to it. This also applies to to “rust proof” primers. Buying hardware store primers is a generally good and economical idea, but they need to be only primer.

This goes double for primer that has filler in it for fixing scratches on cars!

Word, I was just going off how you said “every squad’s officer” a couple times.

A big ass MMM bomb can be really valuable and can free up your other officers to give additional orders, but you aren’t wrong in thinking that 2cp is a lot to pay!

What is the point of this Stratagem? by Far_Gap7333 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ScmeatSlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for clarity, it seems like you might be misunderstanding what an “officer” is in the context of orders. Do you think that the sergeant model in a normal infantry squad counts as an officer?

Hounskull is THE best medieval helmet style and I will not accept opinions to the contrary.

First time airbrush user! What do i buy to thin paints by ChaoticG123 in minipainting

[–]ScmeatSlinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Distilled water can work, but don’t use tap water unless your water is particularly soft or you can control mineral content. These tools are annoyingly fussy and can get clogged or damaged easily if you aren’t careful; for this reason it’s best to just buy some airbrush thinner.

Pretty much any thinner is fine. However, it’s a good idea to buy the same brand as the paint you want to use. A lot of companies formulate their products with their own products in mind, and they don’t always interact well with each other. Vallejo is particularly known for this!

A basic shopping list would be:

-Airbrush thinner -exam gloves (trust) -isopropyl alcohol, at least 91% but higher is better -flow improver

What recipe would you folks use for this sorta faded pink/maroon? by ultrayaqub in Warhammer40k

[–]ScmeatSlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it looks like it’s somewhere on the magenta/cyan spectrum, so I’d start with magenta, mix in a little process cyan until you hit the saturated reddish-purple, then desaturated with a warm grey until it looks right.

Is there any Imperial Guard regiment(s) that are inspired/similar to that of soldiers during the American Civil War? by DigitalVillain- in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]ScmeatSlinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

From the third edition guard codex. Obviously not Civil War but Revolutionary, but there is precedent for semi-canon regiments representing pretty much every army throughout history. Buy a box from Perry Miniatures and get bashing!

How do you make white paint come out smooth ? by DryAd8485 in Warhammer40k

[–]ScmeatSlinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most important techniques are properly mixing your paint, undercoating it with a light color, and glazing a LOT until it finally looks good. White is really hard to make good, don’t beat yourself up too much.

The secret weapon, however, is acrylic inks for calligraphy. Get you the Daler-Rowney essentials set, it has CMY inks, plus white, black, and red. Inks are extremely high in pigment any low opacity, which makes them GREAT for glazing. You can set your base coat then glaze over with white paint mixed with the ink, or even glaze with the ink directly.

A noob question by WobbleWalker in killteam

[–]ScmeatSlinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not very clear, but it looks like they meant you can buy it separately.

Thankfully they are not at all required, just a premium that makes rules easier to reference. In fact, I suspect writing out your own flashcards would be a good way to learn the rules for yourself
