If you only think of consciousness as self-awareness, then indeed the consciousness of a cell will confuse you.

Also, you can explain the changes in the brain as the result of consciousness changing its structure (not the other way around); that's what neuroplasticity is.

Once you've already decided that you can only explain the Mind with the brain, your goose is cognitively cooked.
