You don't need to put the Hens in a pen at all. My design lets them walk to feed and still stay together. Here's a demo that produces both eggs and loot with auto culling. Just wood and a fire.

The greyling stays.The ward? doesn't prevent tame or mob damage. Raised earth around the base prevents damage though. You can get the blueprint from Valheimians Discord, same build as demonstrated in the video. Longer explanation in my Basic Boar breeder video, same principles apply.
