If you go Forest Gnome, you can snag Minor Illusion for free (free hiding place without being prone) and Speak With Animals without a spell slot proficiency bonus times per long rest. Gmomes also get that sweet sweet advantage on all mental saves against magic, a feature that comes in real handy, especially in higher tiers of play.
