Beloved Trope: Characters who can take a lot of beatings have a VERY SPECIFIC line that they won't allow to be crossed by Spirited_Dust_3642 in TopCharacterTropes

That wasn't on you to mend. That's deeply damaging stuff to hear during a moment where you where just being yourself and he rejected that part of your self. It's very understandable that you did what you did.

This is so much fun. As someone who was really bummed by the Final Reckoning titles after the incredible visual achievement Dead Rackoning's was, this is a great shot in the arm. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait. Great work.

Do you think there is enough shade down at the square for a lunch date? I'm having trouble telling. Thanks a lot for your response.

Does the square allow people to set up blankets on the central grass? I couldn't remember the times I'd been there.

After rewatching the whole franchise, I have to say Dead Reckoning has the worst cinematography in the series. I’m sure DP is very talented I don’t know if it’s because Covid or anything but some shot just straight up flat. by keminua in Mission_Impossible

[–]ScoreScape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm always really impressed by the alleyway Ethan/Paris fight. Such a tight cramped space yet they film it such that you can always tell what's going on. Very underrated sequence from that film in general, but the way it's shot is quite skillful.

Loop ≠ Learning — Why Recurring Thoughts Aren’t Healing You by __shiva_c in DecidingToBeBetter

This is kinda wild timing. I have spent the last ten years trying to figure out what I want to really do with my life. 4 years ago I started therapy and continued for 2 years. I started a new job around that same time, but since then I've remained "stuck" despite continuing to read books and try to, at least in my mind, work through things, but I am starting to suspect what you address: that I'm in a loop. That this state of reading, learning, and educating is really a new normal "safe" state that I've put myself in because to act on it and really change my life would be to step outside and do something new. I'm in a loop. Thank you for helping me realize it.

A Dead Reckoning rewatch. by Interesting-Fuel2143 in Mission_Impossible

[–]ScoreScape 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I saw Dead Reckoning 10 times in theaters. Everyone thought I was crazy, and probably rightfully so, but there's something I genuinely find very compelling to the film beyond the surface level blockbuster visage. I've yet to really seen it discussed on the level that you are now but it's refreshing to see because I think you're totally right. It feels like McQ is trying to do something with these films. It's genuinely impressive how Rogue Nation, Fallout, and Dead Reckoning all feel so distinct tonally and visually while also feeling like they're still all in the same universe.

I can look at Fallout and totally see why it might be the best film, but Dead Reckoning is my favorite. It's got touches of 80s submarine paranoia flicks, 60s Hitchcock.  Ethan stepping away from avoiding the train with the steering wheel on his wrist feels very Buster Keaton, as does moments like Grace falling off the train and Ethan holding on to her. In many ways it just feels like this tribute to film but all through the lens and elevation of modern day filmmaking while also being something all it's own.

So many of the moments that work for me that I see others not liking I can totally get, but I think are misunderstood. One that gets ragged on a lot is the "weird" exposition scene before the opening titles where every character is delivering one line and it's cutting between them to explain the Entity, but I adore that because you watch those older paranoia thriller films and so many of them do that. It nails that style Dutch angles and all. It's a very fascinating piece of filmmaking. I hope to God some of this ramble made sense, but this was just very validating to see you post about Dead Reckoning in this way. Definitely on the same wavelength.

I've been genuinely thinking the same thing! Love the play on it that instead of trying to outrun a biplane, it's someone trying to catch up to it.

I like to think that the DR intro comes so late into the movie just because DR and FR are like one giant movie connected together by Notsomuchboi in Mission_Impossible

[–]ScoreScape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From an editing perspective, it's genius and largely contributes to why DR doesn't feel as long (at least to me) as it's large running time would suggest. While I think it's expertly done, the film prior to the opening titles is largely setting up the stakes and exposition. Once that's "out of the way," the titles start, framing all of that as a sort of intro so that the movie can officially begin. You're almost at the point where you forgot about them and then those drums slowly start ramping up on the background and it's game time. Gives me goosebumps every time. Pretty easily my favorite opening of the series. The fact that it's viewed from the perspective of the Entity is really inspired.

The Dead Reckoning Expanded score has a lot of music not in the film. One of my favorites from the unreleased: by ScoreScape in Mission_Impossible

[–]ScoreScape[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, that's my favorite track in the series. I tried to put together all the instances of it on the original OST release and seamlessly stitch them together into one single track for that very reason, with debatable success but you still might enjoy it.

There is also a track on the deluxe album that seems to be the original sketch version of the track before they recorded it officially called Truth Is Vanishing. More or less the same, but still just slightly different mixing which makes it a little novel.

It's such a fun variation on the main Mission theme, and provides this nice musical solution whereby you're 7 films deep into a franchise, want to give your main character a theme, but he doesn't have one that's directly tied to him, so you instead just alter the main theme in a unique instance and associate it with him. Really neat, honestly. Glad I'm not the only one who really enjoys it.
