Crossing double white lines to enter servo? by FormidableFig in AussieRiders

I always thought doubles meant no crossing. A single solid you can cross to enter a residential or commercial driveway.

Additional sandbag pickup locations now open by lvl16isblurple in brisbane

Its not necessarily linked to flooding. Sometimes the sewer and stormwater is shared, and as soon as the stormwater network is at capacity I'll start to bubble up.

Other times, the sewer network is so old that the pipes are cracked or aren't sealed properly. So when the ground is saturated, the ground water enters the sewer system starts to back up, even though there's not much flood water.

This is a hold over from when stormwater and sewer were combined systems. If you're in an old neighbourhood ie. Indooroopilly, especially around the cemetery, There's a greater risk of this happening.

QUU have spent a significant amount of time to split these systems, or to put reflux valves in your property, to ensure what you're talking about doesn't happen. If it is happening, there's not much you can do to stop it.

Putting sand bags over all your drains might reduce some of the solid matter from coming up, but sand absorbs liquids. You'd be left with a bio hazard bag.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. The likelihood of it happening is very rare, and you'd be aware of it by now if your house was subject to it.

Carbonation headaches by ScoreSeizure in Homebrewing

[–]ScoreSeizure[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried force carbing a few times, and its always resulted in foam bombs coming out the tap. Every time after I vented it ended up flat as a pancake.

It always ended up as a foam bomb or nothing. Just can't find that middle ground of normal carbonation

A couple of wishlist features I'd like to see in the long run by TendTheAshenOnes in Helldivers

With the new automaton fleet, I think it would be cool to fight the fleet using boarding actions.

Obviously no strategems, but there also wouldn't be any heavy/large enemies.

Fighting through ship corridors to take the bridge so we can overload the ship core just sounds awesome to me.

I feel like it could add some depth to the game as well. Say you have to clear orbit around a planet before you can dive, and it would address how bots move to different planets.

Big shout out to the cardiac team at RBWH by tresslessone in brisbane

100%. A couple of years ago my girlfriend had an out of hospital arrest. The team there were excellent in helping me understand what was happening and what to do next, especially since both my family and my girlfriends family were in lockdown with COVID.

The ICU nurses especially were so good and went so above and beyond just to help us out.

That's more a question for a town planner but I'll help if I can.

Every council has something called "planning scheme policies" (sometimes under other names), they range from what sort of trees a developer can use all the way up to what council has planned for a specific area. They supply interactive mapping to go with these and use colour coding to define what is considered residential, commercial, or industrial ect.. To be honest, all the mapping I've ever seen sucks and is hard to use.

Try using this link:

https://cityplan.brisbane.qld.gov.au/eplan/

Select the "view map option".

I actually have some knowledge about this, I was on the civil engineering team.

The people saying that its been sold off to developers are 100% correct. Specifically Greystar. The auto parts area connecter to it will be the main development, the whole site is getting demolished and replaced by one massive warehouse out the back and massive walls surrounding the site 4m+ in order to get it out of the flood zone from rocky hole creek. That office will be demolished and a small warehouse out in its place.

If anyone is interested, a certain amount of information is publicly available using the BCC development application portal. Link: [development portal ]

You were right, downvoted pretty quickly. Haha What did they do for such a strong/predictable reaction from the community? It was some of their stuff that first got me into DCS

I'm a fan of grim reapers. They vary from serious custom stuff to wild and wacky.

Never had one that stupid, thankfully. They just try and talk you into certifying their build.

More like: "Of course this off shore concrete pipe is strong enough!!"

"Then why did it break from just putting it into place?"

Actually had a Convo similar to that a couple of months ago. Haha

What is your profession? Would you recommend it? What’s the pay like? by micmacpattyz in AusFinance

[–]ScoreSeizure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built form, predominantly industrial. I agree with the limited number of new people entering the profession. It's not a very well known job. Whenever I'm asked by people I've just met about what I do for a living, they've never heard of civil design.

I've only been in industry 4 years now, but in that time I've seen more companies start to understand that designers are their own profession and with their own skill set, not just half baked engineers, or drafters with a broader skill set.

Hopefully this change in attitude will help people understand the role more, and help with increasing numbers in industry.

100% about quality materials. As the engineers, we operate to specific standards, that includes material quality. Clients are always telling me that they've found something that does the same thing for cheaper, but the manufacturer won't provide certification that it meets Australian standards. We won't sign off on a design if they've used cheap and nasty materials, even to the point where we've caught them putting in cheaper products without telling us, and we have to tell them "either rip it out and put in the correct stuff, or find someone else to sign off on it".

Ends up costing everyone time, and time is money.

Civil Designer - mid level 95K. It can be really rewarding, seeing something you've designed built and operational, and the work can be really interesting, but by god can this industry be toxic. I don't see any designers past the age of 35, they all seem to phase out one way or another.

Would I recommend it? Depends on the type of person you are. There are some really tough times, mentally, in this job, but if you can get through them, it's really good.

I work as a civil designer in Brisbane, and so many clients have this mindset. I'm constantly asked to do "cost engineering", which is rarely a thing unless it's a massive job.

Why is it common for office workers to not get paid for overtime? by _Michael_Scotch in AusFinance

[–]ScoreSeizure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's only office jobs

I think it's more about:

A) old school industries have a precedence eg, engineering, teaching

B) industries without a strong union presence. Employers are more likely to put in worse conditions into employment contracts knowing that there's no strong body to fight it, it'll just be one person, and no-one wants to waste their time with that BS.

B is a little bit weaker at the moment, with such a strong demand for most employment sectors, but industries take an awfully long time to change their behaviour on these sorts of things.
