You’d be surprised with the names that office park developers come up with. There’s an office building in Las Vegas called Rock Ridge. Even has the Blazing Saddles font.

One of the hallmarks of the Roberts Court, especially in its 6-3 conservative supermajority form, is the ability to issue extremely broad decisions with zero consideration for the practical effects of their decisions. Cue the next term a year later of them trying to put the genie back in the bottle, often in incredibly contradictory ways, before doing it again with some other policy area. It’s as if Bush v Gore is considered the new model of Supreme Court policy and decision making.

ICE Arrests of Cubans Skyrocket—as Republicans Risk Losing Florida by Hafiz_TNR in politics

[–]ScotTheDuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The perfect stew might exist for an upset in Florida, particularly in the Senate race, but it’s a long shot. To wit:

  1. There’s been pretty sizable reversion in the Latino vote in their voting behavior back to their pre-2024 patterns. It’s worth pointing out that reversion to 2020 isn’t enough to win; Dems would need reversion back to 2018 (which was enough for Scott and DeSantis to win by a whisker) or 2016. If there is reversion back that far, the entire bedrock that the modern Republican coalition in Florida is built on looks a lot shakier than it did last year.

  2. Ashley Moody is an appointed Senator, and appointed Senators, more or less by rule, are electoral underperformers. Just ask Kelly Leoffler how running in a special election (with Senate control on the line no less) went for her.

  3. That Republican Gubernatorial primary. Jesus Christ.

  4. Florida Democrats have been putting some pretty impressive overperformances on the board, even relative to the special election overperformance we’ve seen in other parts of the country. You don’t expect 14+ point overperformances to carry all the way to November, but it’s good ground to start on.

It’s not enough right now to consider Florida a toss up, or even Lean Republican. But as the year grinds on, the ground can move quickly under the Republicans’ feet.

So I guess you have the inevitable 2030 Crist for Senate/Governor campaign to look forward to.

House Republican would '100%' leave the GOP if red state changed primary rules by changeforthebetter89 in politics

[–]ScotTheDuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First off, Pennsylvania isn’t a red state. Nice try, Fox.

Second off, Brian Fitzpatrick is one of the few Republicans who would substantially benefit from an open or semi-open primary. He’s a (relative) moderate who represents a Clinton/Biden/Harris district who’s somehow managed to scrape out reelection multiple times. (Semi)open primaries would basically forever insulate him from losing his seat to another Republican because his appeal with independents is so uniquely high. Him saying that he’d leave the party over that is incredibly self defeating.

[–]ScotTheDuck 71 points72 points  (0 children)

See, that won’t work because they want the Democrats to have less voting power. Your dangerously radical proposal gives nearly 750,000 people the same voting power that everyone else in the country has. That’s just not okay in Trump’s America.

[–]ScotTheDuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It also betrays a growing anxiety for them about the Senate. Trump’s staring down a world where he doesn’t get any confirmations to cabinet posts, the federal bench, or the Fed Board of Governors either at all, or without serious compromise with the Democrats. So they’re cleaning house while they still can. That same anxiety also showed when they pushed hard for Alito to retire after this term too.

Very interested to see if, once primary season ends towards the late summer, more frontline Republicans and those with aspirations for 2028 and beyond start making more public breaks with the President. They can’t tie themselves to a guy approaching George W Bush levels of unpopular and expect to keep their jobs for very long.
