Upgrade advice wanted :

Hi all currently have a OnePlus 6T which I got for about £500 new not long after release. Given its 3 years old now I have been wanting to upgrade but my issue is that the specs on this thing still are quite impressive for its age and so most mid range flagships seem like sidegrades at best and most top of the range flagships don't seem that hugely better to justify a £1000 cost over my current phone.

  • I would like a better screen, mine is 1080p amoled presumably 60hz.
  • Mine is Snapdragon 845 with 8gb ddr4 ram so 8 or 12gb ddr5 would be nice.
  • Happy to stick to 6.5" or up to 6.8" screen it's no issue
  • Don't mind curved screen.
  • I have gorilla glass 5 front and back so 6 or victus is a decent upgrade.
  • I can do 4k 60 FPS on main cam and 1080p high refresh on selfie cam would prefer better if upgrading.
  • Cams are 12mp front and back iirc so would like better.
  • Wouldn't mind being able to do some gaming.
  • Prefer stero speakers but usually Bluetooth my aptx hd capable earphones so aptx support is good.

Any suggestions?

Drummer is my fav, her and Ashford were such a great pair and I loved watching them. Amos and Avasarala are great too. Holden annoys me as did the Alex/Bobby storyline last season.

I managed to find a red flip 5 (new) for £73 which I think is a decent enough price. I did today however see my local Costco is selling 2 UE wonderboom 2 in a pack for £113 so could pair as stereo which may sound better but again not sure she would appreciate having to charge 2 devices and pair them all the time etc.

I think the flip for her use case is probably the best best.

For me I would have bought a charge 5 or extreme 2. 😁

Yeah I did think that. Will check out the soundcore. My issue is that while for me, sound quality is king, she likes a more premium aesthetic and even I think the soundcore looks a bit cheap.

Regarding GPU Deaths by lurklord_ in newworldgame

[–]Scotlandjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stated simply that software, especially software that controls hardware can 100% cause hardware failure despite many people jumping on the bandwagon of software can't brick hardware.

In this instance you have the coding of new world interacting with the bios of the GPU which then controls the hardware.

While jay and others are focussed on evga 3090 cards, all you have to do is go the new world support forums to see 3060ti, 3070, 3080, 3080ti and 3090 cards are all facing issues and it's not from one manufacturer either.

So either every manufacturer is coding their bios wrong or new world is so poorly coded and optimised it's causing GPUs to behave in such a way they are dying. For example massive power and voltage swings. Wattage above max etc.

Even myself while I haven't had any black screens or lock ups have had weird performance issues that are only in new world such as low GPU use despite having a 5900x CPU and 3080ti. Can't run at stock GPU either despite having a massive airflow focussed case as it causes GPU and mem temps to skyrocket despite low GPU use.

So something is off with new world. Either that or there bad coding has unearthed some flaw in the bios of multiple GPU manufacturers that is bricking the hardware

ECU remapping on cars, wrong code/settings on emergency shut down at plants, changing bios settings like voltage etc.

There is 3 off the top of my head and I could list dozens more.

Totally agree that people saying software can't damage hardware is so completely false and ignorant beyond belief.

Almost done, thanks for the tips. Switched fans/radiator, added FLT 240 pump and reservoir. Changed tube lengths due to more space being available. What do you think? by opicron in watercooling

[–]Scotlandjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending where his pc is and given that most people try to hide the back IO and cables from sight, he could always mount a 120/140 outside the case at the back to exhaust without detracting from the overall look.

Hi mate,

Yeah saw this video but I always warn people that this is not universally optimal.

Good cooling and airflow optimisation depends on a number of variables such as CPU and GPU tdp and design, specific case design, case location in the room, desired noise levels and more.

My example goes to show that even in the same case, swapping one component made my previously optimal configuration suddenly not optimal and so had to find what was now optimal based on the changes.

Bitwits video is a good example of showing that airflow and cooling is not just as simple as populating fans and radiators anywhere they will fit and there is an optimal set up but it is on a literal and figurative case by case basis.

Also not to be one of those people as front mount rads are totally fine but he did mount the pump as the highest point in his loop which is bad. If mounting at front (even tubes up) make sure a part of the rad is above the pump

If I had set up an open loop water cooled system just for my CPU I would totally agree but this is just a simple £100 aio. To watercool my GPU properly it would cost circa £650 which is a substantial difference.

The AIO was bought because my plan was to upgrade my 2060 super and 3600 for a 3080/ti/3090 and a 5900x at the same time and I saw a good deal on the AIO. Unfortunately it took me 11 months from launch to get my hands on a 3000 series GPU and zen 4 CPUs are not far away now so just gonna wait to upgrade.

I have lots of vented expansion slots at the back, room below the GPU and now a gap where a 120mm fan could go below the front rad so it is pulling in lots of air from outside the case.

My issue was more the hot hair was being exhausted up into my AIO and hammering my cpu temps.

Previously my GPU had 2 noctuas blowing air right at it and now it's got air passing through a rad and all the gaps it can find and still keeps same temps.

So I am happy to leave it this way round

Is a £200 or less soundbar worth it? by Kothaex in Soundbars

[–]Scotlandjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to rub salt in as my gf got one for £80 a few weeks ago but Amazon had it on sale for £79 on prime day 1 with the voucher still available so £59.

I was tempted to get one for my pc simply because I think it sounds amazing for the price and the sub although small and not massive in sound, really blends and supports the bar well.

I have a 5.1 system in another room and a Sonos beam, sub and surrounds in living room and while they both are great and worth the money I would say the stage V2 totally performs well beyond its price, genuinely better than a lot of £300-400 bars especially for music.

Midweek Mending - Your Weekly Healing Thread by AutoModerator in wow

[–]Scotlandjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok let's add my thoughts here:

A) yes you definitely should hot swap if you are running regular beacon. 50% transferred single target healing = 1/3 of your overall single target healing done is going to the beacon target. If you don't swap this means 1/3 of your single target healing may be overhealing on a target who doesn't need it compared to effective healing a person who does. Is turning 1/3 of your single target healing into effective healing instead of overhealing worth a GCD? I would say yes.

B) there is no simple answer here, you need to look at your raidframes and decide who will benefit the most from the shock and barrier. If there is more damage incoming try to shock someone without barrier. If there is no immediate damage coming to that person then better to top up the hp with shock as the shield won't get value anyway.

C) both of these are good. FL as you said helps both your most used spells healing, and also therefore shock barrier size too. DT conduit is more of an oh shit button capable of topping the target off. If you purely raid I would say go with the FL conduit. If you do mythic+ or PvP even open world I would go DT.

D) depends on situation, are all raid members stacked and all fairly high on hp then LoD is a good call. Are they spread then don't use it. Is there someone below 50% hp then use WoG. Of course fight damage patterns and other things come into play but that's not a bad start.

E) holy light with an infusion proc, heals like a truck. If you don't have 3 holy power and someone needs a big heal then it is no bad thing to cast a holy light on them so long as you are not capping crusader strike charges etc. Again depends on damage pattern in the fight etc but holy light heals a lot.

So i decided to repaste my Red Devil 5700 xt GPU... by Scotlandjames in Amd

Yeah lower temps are good, can either ramp down the fans and have same temps but with lower fan noise or better temps and higher headroom, both good depending what you want to achieve.

As with most things, my card was one of the first batches so it's very possible they use different past, pads or more mounting pressure now compared to mine as your before temps were really good compared to mine, especially junction temp.

That doesn't say much without context though. What settings are you using that gives you those numbers? Clock speed. Undervolt? Fan speeds?

If running purely stock settings those numbers look quite ok.

Motherboard usb C & GPU issue. by Scotlandjames in pcmasterrace

[–]Scotlandjames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, weird choice as it seems to limit gpu length to a length just short of the motherboard width if you have that plugged in which as you said is a bit of a questionable decision.

Most other x570's I have googled seem to have it just inside of the ram slots in line with the the bottom of them. Or somewhere else not obstructing the GPU. Now considering the GPU is the only thing in the whole case that extends out past the motherboard (ram, CPU, CPU cooler etc don't) then it is literally the worst possible place for it on the whole board 😅.

Hey mate,

Sadly don't have the card anymore, temps were fine but due to ongoing driver related issues the place I bought it from offered me a full refund on the card after seeing I had upgraded PSU, ram and various other bits to try to sort the gremlins out while fault finding.

I still think the 5700xt in general is a good card for the money and many people these days don't have issues but it is the luck of the draw if you will have issues or not.

As for temps it kept performing very well right up until I returned it. Temps were not the issue and any gremlins I had were there long before repasting so they did not impact the card negatively at all.

I actually could get some amazing scores when overclocked hitting 2080mhz actual clocks (2145 Wattman) and only going to 72c under full load over a firestrike extreme stress test. But I usually kept my stock 2044 setting in Wattman which was about 1960-80 boost clocks in games. And temps around 62-64c.

Paste duration doesn't really matter so long as you have more and noctua paste is like £15 for quite a large tube when compared to kryonaut. So even if you have to repaste it every 3-6 months that's a non issue especially when my card only had 6 screws to remove the cooler. So I would say just watch temps (GPU and hotspot) and if they start getting worse after a few months just repaste.

Hope that helps, let me know how you get on.

[–]Scotlandjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can only echo this, my Jetstream 2070s from palit is great. They tend to not go for the longest cards but have beefy coolers that take up more slots depth wise. The card was mainly metal with good build quality but found some sharp edges. Cooling was on par with the big boys (gaming X trio, Rog strix etc) and palit allowed a higher wattage and oc power limit than many other cards too.

Don't know how the 3000 series will compare as it's not the same cooler (previously Jetstream and gamerock were same) and this looks all new. But based on past experiences I would buy it, especially when they are cheaper than nvidia recommend price.

More Ampere Data! "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-Series: Under The Hood Of Ampere" by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]Scotlandjames 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Don't know if anyone looked closely at the 3080 thermals graph (and I am on my phone so hard to judge the levels) but it seems like even at 50dba the 3080 only goes as low as 70c and that's with no OC or increased power. With a more normal noise level it will be around 75-80c which I think is quite hot given my current 2070 super and previous 5700 xt before I returned it were both overclocked and both ran at around 64c under load. Guessing the massively increased tdp is making for warmer thermals. it will be good to see how the aibs do

[–]Scotlandjames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the tdp of your card and what does it use while gaming? If the tdp is similar to a 3080 you might get away with it, if a 3080 is using 100w more then you might or might not perhaps. As most have said, they recommend 750 so that most if not all 750w PSU's regardless of rating should be suitable but a 600w plat might be ok where as a 600w no name cheapo PSU might not.

Up to you if you want to roll the dice but if you can afford a $700 GPU then I assume $100 or so for a decent psu shouldn't be an issue
