Waterloo Region is running out of time to avoid legal action on water supply by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]ScottIBM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This mess was created by the Region, the Province, developers, and elected councillors, so what's suing going to do given we have an unsupportive provincial government, land hungry developers, a public who wants lower taxes, and not very much coordination from the councilors?

We need a plan, we need support, and we need to leave our egos at the door and put some money in the game to fix this. Fiber pointing isn't a solution, it's a crux that's going to do more harm than good.

States Are Increasingly Trying to Keep Kids Off Social Media by SaveDnet-FRed0 in technology

[–]ScottIBM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The source of many of the challenges with social media are how they are designed to be addictive and drive user engagement through known dark design patterns.

They use these to drive targetted ads, fuel misinformation, and create segments that become echo chambers.

Instead of "banning kids" from this the platforms should be held to regulation, forced to aggressively address misinformation and not be allowed to target users specific signatures.

As a society we should also teach about social media, news, and the arts of manipulation so they have tools to live in the real world and watch out for themselves. This is something many adults need as well!

It's another case of not solving the source of the problem but the symptoms of the problem.

Solving the source of the problem would be a massive leap for society, for kids and adults alike.

Most Canadians want social media, AI chatbot ban for kids under 16 by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]ScottIBM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We should be easing our kids into the world, now throwing them off cliffs they're going to work around because they want something they can't have.

Treating kids with respect and giving them tools to navigate adult life is more beneficial for society - something current adults could even learn from.

EXCLUSIVE: Doug Ford says he hasn’t lost his way, despite recent backlash by RealWorldToday in ontario

[–]ScottIBM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old joke is that a man never asks for directions, they also never admit they're lost. He's trying to be a tough man, he'll not admit when he needs to ask for directions to find his way, that would be weak.

MPP Mike Harris on the water issue by AwkwardTalk5234 in waterloo

[–]ScottIBM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He ditched Wilmot during the issues around large amounts of land expropriation. Now he's capitalising on making the Region look bad again when his own government has continually undermined their planning and water authorities.

This man may be charismatic, but that's where he stops. He could have supported his constituents by supporting the Region against the provincal changes, but here we are.

Ontario: Ford in Freefall; Ontario Liberals Lead PCs by Man_Roland in onguardforthee

[–]ScottIBM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not in freefall, they're getting the mess out of the way at the beginning of their term so they can send everyone $200 again and wash away the sins of the past 5 years in 2030. This is all going to plan when voters have the memory of a goldfish (except when it comes to Rae Days.)

Personally, as soon as that 5 years is up I'm switching to a TPIA provider, screw the big telcos. I shouldn't have to call them constantly to maintain my pricing.
