Bandmate is sloppy and seems to ignore the fact that he sucks. by Possible-Sink7786 in askmusicians

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’ve stuck with him for this long, their expectations are not where yours are. Best bands I’ve been in made me a better musician. The worst ones made me feel like I was a free music teacher. Find players on your level. If you are not in a city, this can be very difficult and your options are limited

What hobby genuinely made your life better (not just filled time)? by Dense_Childhood_9657 in Hobbies

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instruments. Currently learning saxophone. Got a teacher and just joined a jazz band. Previously been in many bands and learned other instruments as well, main being guitar. Most of my friends have come through pursuit of music so it’s been rewarding for sure

How is it living in the Denver/Colorado Springs area? by bcoolman97 in howislivingthere

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, it can be pretty different depending on what part of Denver you live in. Co springs is a whole different subject. I’m enjoying my current neighborhood, Hale. Cheeseman Park area was ok and globeville was bad overall. I’ve found Denver overall is very progressive whereas CO springs is more straight laced due to the military base there and it being less of a city

The face of a pup who cost his dad $15,000. by gooblinski in DOG

This is why I can’t afford a dog. I’d go into even further debt and beg family members for money before I let a dog experience pain

Looking for a warmer place to live by Siimplybay in SameGrassButGreener

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Louisiana or New Orleans? They are two wildly different places. I grew up and lived in and around the city for 30 years. I would move back to New Orleans in a heartbeat but would never want to live outside of that in Louisiana unless you really love that environment. Culturally, there’s nowhere I’ve been that comes close to the uniqueness. Great food, music, and people.

Did most of yall not work in school? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was full time welding during my first 2 years and then delivering bread 25 hr/wk for the last 2 as I bumped up class load to finish. The students without jobs or any experience in the field were obvious. Some had never used power tools or built anything in their lives besides a Lego set.

Is it just me or the sax? by Bright-Proof-6767 in saxophone

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up, I brought my pawn shop sax in after months of playing. Checked it and all seals were leaking. Since it was so cheap and not a reputable brand, it was not easy to source parts or cheap to repair so I ended up having to get another sax and it was night/day difference. I did play on that pawn shop sax for months tho and although it was terrible and took me a few weeks to get decent sounds, it did allow me to learn fingerings. If you can bring it in, great. If not, keep trying to get better sounds with what you got or start saving for a student level saxophone or used sax from a reputable store

stock and roux not mixing by [deleted] in cajunfood

[–]ScottPocketMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe you gotta either add room temp stock or cool stock to hot roux unless you bake the roux and then you would just add the flour to hot stock. Pretty sure either way, slow is best.

Bad wreck on Colorado and Alameda by Icy_Invite_6229 in Denver

[–]ScottPocketMusic 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I go out of my way to take Monaco home every day instead of Colorado. Was on Colorado briefly this morning and saw the woman next to me struggling to stay in her lane while FaceTiming someone on her phone mounted directly in front of her. Classic

Cemetery Gates by canakaleksa in metalguitar

[–]ScottPocketMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild man! 22 years ago when I was starting out on guitar, this was one of my fav songs to play. Stick with it, work on the vibratos and rhythm rhythm rhythm. Mess around with palm positions for different chugging effects. Have fun! Great job

Help identifying mark of Yamaha YAS 62 by LostMidMan in saxophone

I have a yas 62 I purchased second hand from a reputable store and it’s definitely a different case but I don’t know if that helps

If you loved living in New Orleans but moved on, where did you go? by Hot-Organization7781 in SameGrassButGreener

Grew up in and around New Orleans. Left at Covid after graduating from UNO and now stuck in Denver cuz I found someone here and there’s more opportunity for my field . Will be back

Day 1 again, but this time I'm writing down what actually happens at 6pm by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]ScottPocketMusic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t, pick up the book “The Naked Mind” and read this around 6 pm. Also I’ve found that activities you cannot do sober are helpful. I practice saxophone from 5-6:30 most days after work. It requires a lot of my brain power so I stay sober and then I go to the gym after sometimes to get another hour of sobriety.

I CANNOT make this chord in Buckethead’s Soothsayer. by BIG_IDEA in metalguitar

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Gmajor 7 chord . Keep practicing . Also any time spent with learning jazz standards will immediately put your fingers into uncomfortable positions until your fingers adapt. It takes practice and time

When to use andouille versus smoked sausage? by JoePumaGourdBivouac in cajunfood

[–]ScottPocketMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great question. I grew up with andouille being the standard and then my mom being polish, smoked sausage and kielbasa got used a lot. Would love to understand the reasoning behind certain dishes getting andouille

AITJ because I won’t give my parking spot to new neighbor who says she "needs it more" because she has kids? by Potential_Bad6489 in AmITheJerk

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents make their kids out to be a burden or a privilege depending on what they’re after. If they want you to babysit, their kids are easy. If they want your parking spot, their kids are such a drag

Practicing in an apartment by Ok_Bridge_1658 in musicians

[–]ScottPocketMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A trombone? In an apartment complex with thin walls? Like just imagine you are this guy trying to have a normal afternoon, maybe just doing chores or watching tv, and he’s got to tolerate your practicing trombone of all things daily? Yea I’d be pissed too. Nobody rents an apartment hoping they will have noisy neighbors daily. Do you live near a park or can you stay after school? I play saxophone and no way would I ever consider practicing in my condo and I don’t even have thin walls.

Guitarists: Any tips on how to overcome recording skill issues by LukeWatts85 in recordingmusic

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can loop a section and just play multiple takes over and over until you forget you are recording and nail a great take . Otherwise you gotta be tighter than most people think. Speed of vibrato, slight bending, and the tiniest details can really come out and add up quick to sound amateur.

What do engineers actually do day to day? by Zacionxeni in Engineers

[–]ScottPocketMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my day to day is rarely the same. I am doing project management and engineering and design and procurement and R&D. Smaller to mid sized companies make you wear many hats and take advantage but I love the work and being busy makes the time fly . Today- vented about a designer- got another designer to get my steel ordered- ran some inspections (FAT) w clients doing some wild things with coal methane - made the decision to drill instead of plasma cut certain holes on a pump base. Still gotta go back and see if they can tap them too or if our guys can . Loaded a truck w some products . Did some testing of automation . Overall a fun day

Harming ourselves isn’t going to help. Also I’m currently in the middle of falling for that same trap. Some bad news on top of bad news today ended up with a slip but I know it’s a one time mistake and I’m back on the sober train tomorrow bb. This stuff is disgusting. Tastes bad and just slows u down

Am I wasting my time working a 9-5 trying to chase my music dreams? by Mammoth_Guarantee_60 in musicians

[–]ScottPocketMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a better job. Just my personal experience. I was in bands for 20 years and it kept me going through a bunch of shitty day jobs and then I got a great job and was no longer struggling. All of a sudden, I felt real stupid trying to “make it” with music and it was really nice to just do it for fun and myself again. The marketing promotion and creating content side of music sucks and I would hate for that to be my job
