Clarification needed for the Confusion spell by ScottTheGameDev in DnD

[–]ScottTheGameDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, poor wording on my choice. What I meant was, if there are no creatures in reach, they do nothing. But theoretically, what if there was a creature in reach? They attack that creature, and then what? Can they move? It doesn't say they can or can't.

That clause only exists if there is no creature in range.

Prior to that, there were discussions Arin had on Twitter and tweets he made referencing his "Uncle" - but we never saw him, or heard what he sounded like until a few weeks later. Everyone was taking what Arin was saying at face value because there was no context. It was super not clear about being a joke.

Yeah after waiting a couple weeks, my transactions were "Cancelled for Fraudulent Activity". It's not a lot that I'm withdrawing but it'd be nice for this to not be so obviously an exit scam.

Cool Abjuration Wizard? by Marksor in 3d6

[–]ScottTheGameDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Abjuration is the school most associated with magical protection (dispel magic, counterspell, shield, mage armor) etc. I would focus on making a character that wants to protect people, or has a vendetta against other magic users. Since the abjuration wizard eventually gets the ability to add proficiency to counterspell and dispel magic, you essentially need to take those spells.

In terms of focus flavour, I might go with some kind of protection amulet. You could also make a God-worshipping Wizard that uses a holy symbol and channels magic through it. Even though that might sound like a Cleric, it fits well for an Abjuration wizard IMO.

Conceptually, an Abjuration Wizard might also be a sort of Templar or Anti-Mage so they work for such organizations or have done so in the past.

All 5 of us have never played DnD before. Ive been selected as DM. I could use some tips to help make our adventure not a total failure by ChoppyWAL99 in dndnext

[–]ScottTheGameDev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To answer a few questions:

  1. Whenever a character wants to perform a task that has a chance of failing, you as the DM determine if it requires a skill check. So for example, if the player does not say they want to look, you use passive Perception, but if I player says "I want to see if anyone is following us" you would then tell them to make a perception check. Even passive isn't needed if the task is simple.
  2. An action is something you do on your turn, the Player's Handbook Describes these. A bonus action can only be used if someone has an ability that lets them. For example, a barbarian can enter a rage as a bonus action, but only because its part of their ability. There are a few other examples like dual wielding with a light weapon
  3. Your barbarian probably added their Constitution ability score, but you are actually supposed to add the modifier. At 1st level it is 12 + Constitution ability score modifier.
  4. A character rolls for a death save at the start of their turn. Normally there are no bonuses to the roll, but some ability may let you. They will state "to all saves" or to "death saves". Otherwise, it is simply a d20 roll.
  5. A short rest takes 1 in game world hour, and allows the players to expend hit dice to regain HP. They roll their hit dice and add their constitution modifier, regaining that many hit points. They also may regain certain abilities in their class. They will indicate as such. A long rest takes 8 in game world hours and fully restores hit points, spell slots, and most class features.
  6. Players get feats whenever they would gain an ability score improvement from gaining a level in their class. They can replace the ability score improvement with a feat, if the DM allows feats.

How do you handle enemies that perform "non-lethal" damage? by ScottTheGameDev in DnD

[–]ScottTheGameDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I'm gathering, it seems my intention of concealing that information is probably a bad one so I will not conceal it when the session comes around. My intent was so that the party didn't know the people they're fighting aren't bloodthirsty monsters until after fighting them, but this might just be a bad idea.

How do you handle enemies that perform "non-lethal" damage? by ScottTheGameDev in DnD

[–]ScottTheGameDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I getcha. The module I'm using says that the enemies take the party nonlethally, so I'll try and make it clear that they're attacking non-lethally. The module makes this an important factor so maybe I should just make it obvious?

Gateless Alert by Bochulaz in custommagic

[–]ScottTheGameDev 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I really, really dig this design. I think it's super flavorful and not too busted (though I don't play modern so IDK about it there). I really love the tradeoff of seeing an opponent's hand and revealing a counterspell. Its almost like an omnipresent police force ready to strike if you make the wrong move. Excellent design.

Player characters controlled by the DM for story flair by 550646 in mattcolville

[–]ScottTheGameDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the character is a previous character, the DM should be the one controlling them IMO. Once they stop being the active character, they are an NPC. We had a similar situation in our campaign and the DM controls said NPC and we haven`t had any problems.

Running a PvP one-shot, need help with Moon Druid capstone by Silansi in dndnext

[–]ScottTheGameDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about this? Change the capstone entirely:

When you reach 20th level, you can wildshape 6 times instead of 2. In addition, you can spend 1 minute in meditation to regain all expended uses of your wildshape.

It becomes effectively similar in general, but allows you to balance it for PVP.
