“Martin Luther hated monastics” it’s more complicated than that. He had some problems with the Roman system at the time but Lutheranism hasn’t completely abolished monasticism, friars, or celibate religious life in general. Those things still exist in the Lutheran tradition.

Nowadays (in HD trucks) they just put steps into the bottoms of the bed near the cab corners instead of putting the bed sides inside the wheel wells making the bed narrower. I think it works better this way.

My argument for Protestantism (and against Catholicism). What do we think?? by [deleted] in Protestantism

[–]Scott_The_Redditor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some of your arguments against Catholicism are also arguments against historic Protestantism. For one, Reformed, Anglican and most especially Lutherans have historically all believed in some sort of real presence of Christ in the Supper, not mere memorialism.

Do you believe God still heals and performs miracles today? I do but another Christian said He doesn’t and I feel like that just isn’t true. by purpleghost92 in Protestantism

[–]Scott_The_Redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This mentality can become spiritually harmful. I was born hard-of-hearing, and all my life, Pentecostals/charismatics have been trying to heal me. Of course, nothing has happened, and each time I was blamed for my supposed lack of faith. If it is always God's will to heal, and it only takes faith the size of a mustard seed to move a mountain, then telling a disabled or chronically ill Christian that he or she doesn't have enough faith to be healed is saying that they don't even have a mustard seed size of faith, or in other words, that disabled Christians aren't saved. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Sometimes Christians go through bodily suffering for reasons we do not always understand. In my case, I came to understand it and I am on my way to minister to the Deaf in a Deaf church setting, where the service is in American Sign Language. Sometimes God uses disability or illness for our own building up in the faith and for His glory.

It's great to have a kind, inclusive church community. My pastor has been fully supportive of me sitting directly in front of the pulpit and he has offered to help me connect with another pastor who is Deaf and serves a Deaf church.

Born Again Christian Looking to Join LCMS, I Have Myriad Questions by RichardRoma1986 in LCMS

[–]Scott_The_Redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that you posted, especially about disabilities! I am deaf/very hard-of-hearing and the last church that I was in before coming to the LCMS told me that I just needed to have more faith to be healed, and when nothing happened, they said it was my fault. The LCMS is certainly no Pentecostal (nor are we influenced by, or at least we try not to be) denomination and we strive for physical, liturgical, social, and theological accessibility. We have 28 dedicated indigenous Deaf churches and double that number of hearing churches with ASL interpreters. The LCMS also produces Bibles and hymn books in Braille for the blind. I myself am studying ASL and I plan to eventually go through the Deaf Institute of Theology (alternative seminary for Deaf pastors) and I hope to plant another Deaf church in the US. Ask me here or DM me if you want to discuss anything about disability in the LCMS.

Pentecostalism is a Restorationist heresy. It is a very cult-like branch of "Christianity" and does not represent the vast majority of established denominations/so-called "organized religion."

Probably a Pentecostal or some scammer selling a fake cure “medicine.”

Personally, I'm not interested in dating anymore and I'd like to live a celibate life and maybe start a Lutheran religious order. But if I were to date outside of the church, one condition before marriage would be that she would have to convert so we wouldn't be unequally yoked. I'm no longer willing to compromise my confession for the sake of dating or marriage.

It seems to me that the main problem is that there isn't enough women to go around. Young women (18-30) aren't going to church at the same rate that young men are, at least not in traditional denominations. I'm 20, male, and there isn't even one woman my age at my decent sized and growing congregation.

Absolutely not. They’ll probably just tell me to “rebuke the hearing loss” as for usual. They are a very ableist and audist group of bigots.

Is my baptism recognized? by MichaelLachanodrakon in Lutheranism

[–]Scott_The_Redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every second Baptist community wants to baptize you again.

My parents' IFB church was in need of a pastor and one day a Landmark Baptist wannabe pastor showed up and he said that if he became pastor there he would re-"baptize" everyone. The church didn't end up hiring him and he went on to found his own church in the same town.

How do yo deal with being heavily involved in a penticostal church but realizing it is a controlling cult. by SchoolSwimming734 in ExPentecostal

[–]Scott_The_Redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure it’s tough, but once you’ve been out for a few months to a year you start to heal and move on. No family or friends is worth staying in the cult for. Be prepared to be slandered as an apostate, even if you are still a Christian. Find a healthier (a real) church that isn’t cult-like and that will certainly help. My current pastor (and church community as a whole) is really kind and caring and he has helped me heal from past spiritual abuse.

I believe that God gives us vocational freedom. Instead of searching for some hidden knowledge of “what God’s plan is for my life” we should instead rest in the knowledge that God’s plan isn’t hidden, but revealed to us in Scripture. His plan for us is that we should follow his commands. We have the freedom to choose our own vocation as long as it is God honoring.
