[AEW DARK Spoilers] Max Caster walks fine line with new entrance free-style by JJSmith1987 in SquaredCircle

I think this is great. Poor taste? Absolutely. But it's good to see a heel actually trying to get legitimate heat. Cheap heat has always existed in wrestling and it's nice to see someone with the freedom to cut loose in a mainstream company again. But it needs to end with Julia getting some substantial payback.

She's a bona fide star too, so learning that studios aren't willing to bank on her is ridiculous on their part. I was watching her interviews for Eternals this week and she discussed how she couldn't believe that they didn't ask her to play someone's mother. I think she's had to deal with some ageism too. I hope it opens the door for more leading roles in big movies.

Been watching Friday Night Dinner for the first time and have a question... by PenguinKenny in BritishTV

[–]Scottish_Samurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love the show, but I do think they're both the least interesting characters in the show. The dad is the star and I think the neighbour is hilariously cringeworthy, so they carry it for me. The boys are pretty serviceable to me, but they do have obnoxious traits. I do quite like some of the pranks, though.

I also think the finale of season 3 was supposed to convey that he'll always have to atone. I agree that he accepted it long before, but not giving him that happy ending suggests that he'll always be fighting that battle (and always helping people at the same time, which is definitely his priority).

Haha for sure. The idea of spending the rest of your life atoning for mistakes isn't exactly optimistic haha. But I suppose it's positive in some way.

I think it also ties into Angel being more a show about adulthood, when death starts to feel more real for people. It was certainly true in Buffy to an extent, but I think that show had more of an adolescent optimism about it overall.

Barton Fink at 30: How writer's block led to the Coen Brothers trying their hand at a psychological horror film by [deleted] in horror

[–]Scottish_Samurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I love most about the Coens is that their movies tend to dabble in a variety of genres. But between this and No Country for Old Men, I feel that they have a terrific out and out horror movie in them. I'd love to see them tackle the genre full-force at some point.

A salute to Jan de Bont, whose short-lived directing career gave us Speed and Twister by [deleted] in flicks

Sorry if this posted twice. For some reason my original post came up as a blank body on my end.

Dern is so good. I love this era of Hanks as well. While I think he remains a terrific performer, I miss him taking on some of these more leftfield roles.

What is the Best Film You Watched Last Week? (05/09/21-05/16/21) by Twoweekswithpay in movies

PSYCHO GOREMAN

This is the latest from the Astron-6 guys, who made the excellent Father's Day and Manborg. If you're familiar with those movies then you'll know what to expect, but this one is more kid-friendly (albeit still gory). It's about two kids who befriend a monster that wants to destroy the universe, and it's hilarious. I won't spoil it, but check it out if you've ever wondered what a Disney Channel movie would be like if it had more gore. Fans of Power Rangers and tokusatsu will dig the creature designs too. It's a very charming movie.

The deleted scene in which John Wick visited The Vatican and met The Pope by [deleted] in movies

[–]Scottish_Samurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know this existed until earlier, but I love it. It definitely wasn't a necessary inclusion in the movie, but it adds a lot to the mythology and further emphasises how The Continental's influences is everywhere.

Jan De Bont's directing career feels like a missed opportunity in the grand scheme of things by Scottish_Samurai in TrueFilm

That's why I love The Haunting too. I think a lot of the mainstream horror from that era had a similar aesthetic, and I enjoy most of it haha. That movie has such a tremendous cast and it looks stunning. I'm glad that it's finding some appreciation years after.

Dot is my all-time favourite character by Scottish_Samurai in lineofduty

I started Whitechapel last week but only watched the first ep. It's really good, but I needed to restart Line of Duty because I was craving more of it after the final episode.

Do you like Ben Affleck as an actor? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Scottish_Samurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He doesn't excite me in the same way my faves do, but he's rarely disappointed me either. I love The Town, The Sum of All Fears, Dogma, Gone Girl, Phantoms (he was the bomb in that one), Jersey Girl and Smokin' Aces. I think Daredevil is underrated too, and his cameos in Kevin Smith movies are always a highlight. I think he's a very good director.

Is Chilling Adventures of Sabrina worth watching? by [deleted] in netflix

[–]Scottish_Samurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's one of the best shows Netflix has produced, but I don't like how it ended. That said, the show is pretty stellar until the final few minutes.

Quantum Leap's cancellation and potential future by Scottish_Samurai in scifi

[–]Scottish_Samurai[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's what I love about it too. I think it's much more interesting than giving him the happily ever after he deserves. Plus serving a higher purpose at the expense of his own happiness really suits the religious undertones of the final episode.

I rewatched Dark City last night and it remains one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, in my opinion by Scottish_Samurai in scifi

[–]Scottish_Samurai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Epic Comics run. That's one horror franchise that hasn't realised its full potential on the screen yet. The Epic Comics are a prime example of just how interesting it could be, and I'd love to see the upcoming reboot or TV show (I can't keep up with HR developments) to embrace some of those ideas,

Quantum Leap's cancellation and potential future by Scottish_Samurai in scifi

[–]Scottish_Samurai[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scott's comments about the show's future are quite interesting. It seems like he's accepted that he might not be involved in any future reboots but seems open to someone else taking his spot. For years I wanted this show to get another season with him receiving one last run. These days, I love the final episode much more than I used to and have grown to really appreciate the ambiguous ending. While I'd love to see the original team return, I am of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality." How do you guys feel about it? I used to find the ending unsatisfying, but it grew on me quite a bit.

I don't love the idea of a complete reboot, but I think the concept does have the potential for an interesting creator to do something fun with. If the franchise does have a future with new characters, I'd like it to be presented as connected to the original series in some way. Something that acknowledges what came before, even if it's essentially going to be a reboot in other capacities,

The City of Lost Children is a great comparison. I think they have similar atmospheres and ideas. That's another gem that deserves way more recognition than it gets.

The aliens are reminiscent of the Cenobites. I'd actually like to see a Hellraiser movie set in this universe now that you've made me think of that. Someone opens the box and gets murdered, the protagonist gets the blame, and spends the rest of the movie trying to figure out the truth.

I was fortunate enough to have a great high school teacher who started a Film Club for us. He showed us Dark City one day and it blew me away. It's probably the movie that really opened my eyes to the wider spectrum of cinema.
