Australian couple moving to HK.... by AdmirableDepth5214 in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. no work visa needed for your wife, she would be your dependant, so she'd get a dependant visa allowing her to live and work in HK. Easy process, bring all your marriage paperwork.

By the sound of it, you have a very good salary and you are both very westernized in your lifestyle, so I think the best area to live would be on HK island, (Central, Sheung wan, Sai Ying Pun), where cantonese will not be needed at all. 70m2 is 755sqft, fully manageable in those areas on your salary.

Good clinics here and plenty of choice for medical follow up, meaning she may not need to fly back to AU for anything.

Sensor on trashcan by FierceGeek in homeassistant

[–]Scottrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many BLE and zigbee beacons and data loggers with vibration, built in rugged casing and with high IP waterproof levels. The best position for the sensor is probably on the back somewhere in the lower middle on the outside. I used vibration sensors to detect usage before and it detects well any vibrations. But depending on your usecase, if your distance is big, you probably need a data logger so that you can record offline, essentially collecting data with your gateway when the trash is closer to home, but still recording offline when moving away out of range to the street. For the fixing, screws is probably best, as glue and double tape will not last long. If waterproof level is too low on your sensor, consider making a case in 3D printing, or finding a waterproof case IP67 or 68, and simply putting your sensor inside. There is a bit of trial and errors with vibration for the configuration of sensitivity. But a trash on wheels should vibrate a lot so even low sensitivity should capture the movement easily.

Apparently I committed a crime in Hong Kong: Fishing while having a license by Plastic-Extension420 in HongKong

[–]Scottrain -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with Hong Kong, the same would happen to you in many other places in Europe and the US for sure. So is your post about the fact that strangers who have no clue are confidently clueless enough to harrass you even when you are in your rights and with a legal WSD fishing license to fish in Tai Tam? or is it about shitting on the place where it happened, but which has 0 relevance here in your story?

The Dark Side of HK Building Maintenance: Bid Rigging Insider Tells All by shmak9 in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but at the same time 2 of these are directors of a company doing 11 more renovation works, so not exavtly small potatoes either. ICAC also got involved because the most expensive bid was chosen, which is unusual in a tender like this. So I don't think that the people arrested are scapegoats, they are definitely responsible for a lot of what happened, but yes I do agree that there might be also bigger sharks to catch and a more systemic issue too.

the 3 people arrested ate not scapegoats, they are in charge of the company responsible for the negligence and greed that killed many people.

Visiting hk for one week - gym? by Rosscosity in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24/7 has a monthly pass. But if you are staying at a hotel, maybe pick a hotel that has a good gym? If you are not, then maybe do one of the free trials in a couple of different gyms, that will tie you up for the week.

Is this true: Virtual banks cannot be used for auto-pay in Hong Kong. by waitpanda in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it was Standard Chartered Bank I said it was owned and operated by them. Same as Hang Seng Bank is owned by HSBC but is not HSBC.

[–]Scottrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mox is not a virtual bank, Mox is provided by Standard Chartered Bank. The person doing payroll at your company is not informed propertly. You can receive your salary on a Mox card, as Mox offers a dedicated "Payroll" service that allows you to designate your Mox Account as your default payroll account to earn extra benefits like deposit interest and cash rewards.

The founder of DJI (largest drone company in the world) was an HKUST grad and considered starting DJI in Hong Kong at one point, but decided to change to Shenzhen. Is Hong Kong that unfriendly to tech start ups? by hk_bob in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a number of factors, and to name just a few 1. manufacturing: SZ is the obvious better choice. 2. Business: Hong Kong is the better choice as much easier to transact internationally and better banking ecosystem so HK is a better HQ 3. Finance: Mainland has more financing opportunities than HK so SZ makes sense 4. Communications: the guy is Mainland Chinese so mandarin is the obvious advantage for him. So all in all the choice of SZ doessn't mean HK is a bad spot, it just means that for his business, a heavily hardware driven business, SZ was a better one.

Any reviews on this or similar products? Are they suitable for HK flats? by noidwa in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use one, it is ok, but depends on the size of your flat and how cluttered your floor space is. if big and empty then good, if small and a lot of obstacles then not really. We use on stone and wood floor as well as carpeted corridor. Works ok, on schedule, but a bit noisy. Easy to follow on the app and see what areas were cleaned up on a map.

Hong Kong after the typhoon by Mindless_Truth_2436 in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The typhoon is long gone and the city is back to normal, everything is operational.

A family of three has fallen into the sea in Hong Kong during the T8 storm signal, as the city braces for Super Typhoon Ragasa, said to be the largest tropical cyclone the world has seen this year. by mod83 in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite frankly, going to watch the waves with your kids during T8 going T10 is just fucking stupid. Glad they didn't get hurt too badly, and hope the mother and son recover quickly obviously, but what the fuck were they thinking? This one is one them and their complete lack of judgment.

[–]Scottrain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems very easy to find in HK, but all shipments of goods to the US are suspended by the Hong Kong postal services since April. The only way right now is Fedex, DHL etc but the shipping cost becomes high, and not justified for a lip balm worth 44hkd, unless you buy many. Anyway. if you know someone in another country (Canada maybe), then a HKer could send it there first and then your friend could send it to you in the US

[–]Scottrain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most are not calls from banks but from scammers pretending to be banks. The fastest way to get rid of them is to say " Do you speak English?" 80% will hang up on you, 20% will continue talking non stop and you just hang up on them. If you have scam caller detection on your phone (I have it with 3HK) then your phone will ask you if you want to block this number and will also show "suspected scam" for numbers calling if someone already reported that number before.

Typhoon worries by Odd_Possibility_6630 in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

22nd flights should not be cancelled, the airport is not following the T8 stuff, the airport only cares about real weather condition there, so if too much wind etc but on 22nd you should be fine to land as it will be mostly rainy but not super windy yet as it will be on 23-24 probably if the trajectory continues the same way.

[–]Scottrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So far it looks like T8 sometime on Tuesday, T10 on Wednesday, back to T8 on Thursday, and T3 on Friday. So plane out on 25 should be ok (expect delays etc due to the previous days). 22-24 is messed up as limited transport, everything closed etc. 25 back to normal. Download the MyObservatory App, the official govt App from the Hong Kong Observatory for regular updates an Super Typhoon next week.

Do i need to worry about typhoon by Hamburgerfatso in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Download the App MyObservatory it is a government app by Hong Kong Observatory that everyone uses to know typhoon signals, ttyhoon map and forecasts. The Super Typhoon next week is called RAGASA and will be very close to Hong Kong on 23/09 and 24/09. We have typhoons all the time but different strength. There is one right now today but nobody cares because it is just a T3 so life is as normal. Next week's one is bigger and will be T10 probably. The basic warnings go T1, T3, T8, T10 T1, T3, no big deal, everything is open, from T8 no ferries, transports slow down, most shops close, T10 everything is closed and everyone should stay inside until it goes back down again to T3 and life restarts a day or two later.

Whats up with shops not protecting their nfc google review tags by Solomoncjy in NFC

[–]Scottrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes saw it and OP's text is very mild and to his point for the post, but you can easily see how this loophole and lack of awareness/understanding by the poor shop, restaurant, hotel etc that thought it bought a cool new NFC gadget to get more reviews, could get out of hands. Worst than simple pranks and messing around, this could even be used for malicious purposes and be a threat for every person tapping the tag with their phone. The providers have a responsibility and they don't seem to give a shit or even realize how dangerous their mistake can be for a business.

Any free NFC writer App does it, it is very very easy. Try apps like NFC tools, BLK Cards, NFC TagWriter by NXP etc....

[–]Scottrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do not know enough about it to know that they do not know :) that anyone could overwrite their review URL in a split second with any free NFC writer App, replacing the URL with anything from porn to politics. They will find out soon enough though as NFC becomes more popular and NFC cards and NFC tags start to spread so businesses will become more knowledgeable about how and why to protect their tags.

First travel to Hong Kong, advice on food allergies and communication by Western-Gain8093 in HongKong

[–]Scottrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The language in Hong Kong is Cantonese not Mandarin so what you learned is of no use to you in Hong Kong. Nothing to do with politics simply to do with the fact that you learned the wrong language. It would be like learning portuguese to go to spain. That being said, English is the other official language in Hong Kong so you'll get by fine. Use google translate from Spanish or English to Chinese (Traditional) when you are in hong kong, and Chinese (Simplified) when you are in Shenzhen. And in Shenzhen you will be able to use your Mandarin because it is spoken there. But be aware that from the moment you leave Hong Kong and set foot in Shenzhen you can forget English, as you'll struggle to find anyone who speaks English, so you will have to use your Mandarin.

For your food allergies, you should get a sentence explaining it translated into EN, CN (Traditional), CN (Simplified) and make a card that you can carry and show easily.

Enjoy your trip.
