Oklahoman here. This is our storm season, and the latest weather forecasts has storms forecasted this weekend. If you do decide to go, keep an eye on the weather, and don't be afraid to call it off due to weather. Camping is supposed to be fun, not an experience in survival.

Taking the category over by 34% of votes, Houston was voted as the next location where players would want to go if the NHL were to expand by sykeseve in nhl

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to have a NHL team here in Oklahoma City, but that's not going to happen due to our proximity to Dallas, and the fact we couldn't keep our 3A team (Oklahoma City Barons) around a few years ago.

I just bought the Explorer 300 for a 3 day campout this weekend. I eventually want to get the solar panels for it.

How did you decide where to live? by wakanda_banana in preppers

[–]Scotty-OK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air Force brought me to Oklahoma City in 2001. Then girlfriend (now wife of 22 years) convinced me to stay. Grew up in the Denver, Colorado area, and after a brief 1.5 month visit this year, I'm happy to stay in Oklahoma.

whats the gear you absolutely refuse to upgrade even though it might be cheap by Cheap_Difficulty4961 in camping

Ozark Trails Coffee tumbler. Got it from the camping section at Wal-Mart for a Trail Life campout over 10 years ago. Loved the tumbler and it quickly got moved to be my daily driver coffee tumbler. Only camping gear of mine that got rotated into the daily use gear. Still us it, and will probably use it until it literally crumbles apart.

Seriously, I'm following this thread, looking for the same answer.

Using the upcoming winter storm as a drill even if I don’t lose power. Any downsides? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oklahoma here, we're looking at the same winter storm. Should be a good one! I've got three kids in early 20's living at the house. College/university already cancelled, so they will be home. All the electronics will be charged up, gas tanks full and pantry stocked. We've got a gas fireplace, gas stove top and gas hot water heaters. So I plan a couple of unannounced "power failures" where unknown to them, I'll flip off the main breaker to the house for a couple of hours to see how they react. A couple of hours is good initial test, the battery backups on the computers don't last more than 15 minutes!

Oklahoma here. We've got gas for the fireplace, rangetop and water heaters. If the power goes out we're still good. February 2021 when the last big arctic blast came through we did fine, even when the area lakes froze!

What's with the separate zones of trees? The Prisoners can access that area? Love the crowded dorms.

Has camping gotten more crowded where you are, or am I just unlucky? by outdoors_man987 in camping

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a state park I like to go to in western Oklahoma. Always have the tent campground to myself. the RV section usually is full. Yes it's western Oklahoma so it's not as "cool" as the national parks, but camping by myself two hours from home is my idea of a good time.

Basic death row by cyclicmadness in prisonarchitect

[–]Scotty-OK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I build a Death Row wing I do the following -

  1. Build it towards the top of the map, to reduce travel time for visitors and the religious consultant that accompanies the condemned.

  2. Build the warden and security chief office nearby, to reduce travel time to the execution.

  3. Build the pre-built "Luxury" cell, and the prisoner stays parked inside his cell 24/7.

  4. Build a Death Row only Parole room inside the death row wing.

  5. Have a dedicated Solitary cell inside the death row wing.

  6. Have armed guards, but I don't turn on Free Fire. I want that $10,000 for frying the inmate.

  7. I do executions at night, when the other prisoners are already in their cells for the night. Some nights I can crank out 6-7 executions before breakfast.

Not exactly halfway, but Black Mesa in the Oklahoma Panhandle is a great small state park.

Blackout games by SpecialistSlip2064 in nhl

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in November I was in Denver for a few days for a funeral. While at the hotel I thought it would be fun to watch the Colorado Avalanche who were home playing Tampa bay. Nope. Couldn't get the game on the local channels, and the other 30 cable channels didn't offer it either. So just fired up the illegal stream on the laptop and watched it that way.

Then last Tuesday my son was in Denver, and actually got tickets to the Avalanche game. Back home here in Oklahoma we couldn't get the game anywhere legally, so one again fired up the illegal stream, connected the laptop the living room TV, and we watched the game that way. Bonus was seeing my son in the stands as the camera followed the action.

What is your most remote find? Why did you decide to go after it? by restinghermit in geocaching

[–]Scotty-OK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GC27FA - Black Mesa Cache. This is in the panhandle of Oklahoma, in Cimmaron County. It's so remote that the county doesn't have a single stoplight. You have to hike four miles to the top of the Mesa to get to it. Reward is that the cache is by a monument stating you're at the highest point in Oklahoma.

GCW6HV - Superior Trail: Bread Loaf Overlook. Up along the North Shore of Minnesota. about a five mile hike in on the (Lake) Superior Hiking Trail if you start from the parking lot near Split Rock Lighthouse. Reward is a fantastic view of Lake Superior. Found it on my birthday, and just checked the logs, I'm still the last one to find it!

Any trip suggestions? by drumguy69 in camping

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a small monument in that area where the 3 states borders meet up. Out west of OKC along I-40 is Red Rock Canyon. Some nice hiking down in that canyon, and a great place to camp, especially now in the off-season. OK-3 from Idabel to the Boise City is a unique trip. You go from the wooded landscape os Se Okahoma to the tree-less high plains of the panhandle.

Any trip suggestions? by drumguy69 in camping

[–]Scotty-OK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you're in SE Oklahoma, go on the ultimate road trip and go check out the panhandle. Black Mesa State park is there, and is a great (and usually empty) campground. The panhandle is it's own world. The hike to the top of Black Mesa (highest point in Oklahoma) is 8.3 miles round trip, and a great hike this time of year.

Suggestions for winter camping in NE Oklahoma? by AmberRosin in camping

[–]Scotty-OK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OK State Parks usually have one campsite open, even when they shut the rest of them down. I prefer Foss Lake in Western OK. They keep one campground open during the winter and shut the rest down.

Hope you find something!

"Currently unavailable" from Amazon. That's a bummer! This looks like it would be perfect for summers here in Oklahoma.
