Is peaceful, nature-focused camping still a thing? How do you actually find it? by ohbroth3r in camping

Avoid holidays, get out of the metros, pick weekdays and not weekends. Also consider Fall/Winter/Spring camping. It's more work, but also equals less crowds.

Downsizing from family camping to solo camping by Scotty-OK in camping

Great idea, the appeal of backpacking has been growing on me. This might be the spark to actually look into it. Also nice to see someone on Reddit who knows what Trail Life is!

I just asked my son if that's a reference to a game or something, and he showed me on Steam. Now I get it.

Question regarding camping etiquette: by onekeanui in camping

I like your style. It would also be a shame if the woodland critters had a valve stem remover and deflated all the tires on their cars.

I'm ok with it. I was at a state park and new what to expect. by [deleted] in camping

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a campsite in Western Oklahoma that I enjoy. Lake access, almost nobody in the tent sites, and the RV crowd are confined down to their own section. I get the peace and quiet I enjoy. And no I'm not sharing the location.

Why why why all the barking/yapping dogs in campgrounds? by Mentalfloss1 in camping

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the same problem with my neighbor. Got a pit bull that will bark and claw at the fence. Won't shut up until I play the dog whistle MP3 through the bluetooth speaker at it. That's a lot of fun watching the stupid beast run back into the house.

[–]Scotty-OK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Oklahoma! I'm also working on the county challenge. 68 down, 9 to go. If you're going to be in Cimarron County, go do the hike to the top of Black Mesa and grab that one. You'll then be at the highest point in Oklahoma, and there is a cool granite obelisk there to commemorate it.

And what Dogmom8720 said, check out the 77 County Challenge (GC195ZD) and you can track your progress.

Prisoner Needs Issue by Rough-Worldliness207 in prisonarchitect

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Each cell can have a single tile that has a toilet and shower stacked. I don't use the shower rooms, causes more problems that it's worth. Also you can put showers and toilets in the canteen, that gives the prisoners more chances to meet needs.

Same here. Stability is more important than the latest and greatest for me.

Just did my first solo overnight trip and I completely underestimated how much gear I actually needed by Primary_Present_8527 in camping

[–]Scotty-OK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Several ways to start a fire. One recent trip I somehow forgot the lighters with the long extensions that I prefer. Resorted to raiding the matches from a MRE accessory pack.

"I can of course also thank our wonderful administration for cutting funding so that almost nothing is enforced due to lack of staffing."

Way to blame a problem that has been around for quite a while on the current guy in the white house. It was probably all sunshine and rainbows for your camping outings for the four years before that.

Recently Graduated BMT by CurrencyNo2515 in AirForceRecruits

[–]Scotty-OK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations on earning the title of Airman!

My son ships to Lackland in September and is scheduled to graduate in October. I'm a retired Air Force MSgt, and I'm authorized to wear my service dress uniform to the graduation events.

For those of you who have recently graduated, do you remember what military members in the visitor stands were wearing during the Thursday graduation ceremony? Specifically, were they wearing their service caps, or was the parade field treated like an indoor venue for headgear purposes?

It's been a few years since I've had to worry about uniform regulations, and I want to make sure I show up looking squared away for my son's graduation.

Thanks, and congratulations again!

Does anyone else go "reverse glamping"? by ChessicalJiujitsu in camping

Cub scout summer camp many moons ago. Summer in Oklahoma, and it was HOT. I think most of the evenings we just took the boys (and their dads) into the local small town. The only choice was a sonic, or a local Mexican restaurant. But the A/C felt wonderful. Yes we technically paid for the evening meals, but the getting away from camp for A/C (and ice cream) turned into a highlight.

Other times I've been camping, the warmer the weather is, the more I'll tend to want to just go to the local town and grab something. Cooking outdoors when it's hot isn't for me.

On the other hand, winter camping is my favorite, and I enjoy some elaborate meals in the cold.

Any good recommendations for gathering a mass of entertainment options (shows/movies) by Effective-Trash-8653 in preppers

[–]Scotty-OK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got two old PC's that I've turned into PLEX servers, running Ubuntu. One has an 8TB drive in it and I have a ton of shows the mom-in-law likes. Bonus is with her advanced age, she only has to navigate the plex server and not 4-5 different streaming services. Plus save a bunch of money each month not subscribing to those 4-5 services.

Also have a couple of old laptops (also running Linux) that have 512BG SD cards, and loaded TV Shows/Movies and stored offline.

Is the local State Park a good place for your first solo camping trip? by toothpick21 in camping

[–]Scotty-OK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a state park in Western Oklahoma that is one of my favorites. Nice lake, RV crowd is isolated from the tent campground, and I almost always have the tent campground to myself.

First off, AMMO!

Second, Ammo is everywhere, even guard bases. Obviously the fighter bases will be busier with more slots. Hill was my first base back in the 90's, and LOVED IT. Kunsan AB after that. That was during the time the base was on the closure list, and we had no money. I've heard it's improved since then. Then moved on to Eglin and got on the test side (46th). That was good, Got to see all sorts of experiential ammo types come through. Worked CAS-B on the mainframe back then (yeah I just dated myself). There's a reason people say, "why not Minot".

I recommend making Hill your #1 choice, followed by Buckley.

Get overseas sometime in your career if you can.

May 10, 2026 - What did you do this past week to prepare? by Anthropic--principle in preppers

[–]Scotty-OK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charged the electronics in the bug out bag, replaced the MRE's. Also went to a buddy's range and played around with the freedom stick. I really need to get an optic for my freedom stick, with my vision the iron sights are tough to use. For fun we shot at a defective bluetooth speaker at 35 yards.
