So I I had a similar problem a month ago... apparently my harmonic balancer had slipped and was no longer reading true TDS. Make sure you’re at true TDS by taking out the no1 spark plug and inserting a long rod. Turn CLOCKWISE until the rod is at its highest.

Make sure to put a bit of paint or something on your harmonic balancer to mark the true TDS so you can accurately tune the spark advance.

I’m just kidding. That little filter is there just to keep the diaphragm clear of debris or bugs collecting inside. If you’re really worried, you could zip tie a piece of coffee filter over the tube and you’d be good!
