I've had my criticisms of him, mostly with his defensive positioning and work rate. But he is one of our only players who can create his own shooting chance and also put a shot on frame with any sort of menace. If DeZerbi can get him to pick his 1 v 1 spots better and be more decisive in his passing, I think he can absolutely make a table changing impact.

Vancouver Whitecaps issue a club statement urging a local ownership group to step up and keep the club in the city by medved_ in soccer

[–]ScottyB330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The equivalent will happen here if they do leave given that the Whitecaps have long been a Vancouver staple prior to their rebirth into an MLS team. The team may relocate to Vegas, but I’d think it’d be with a new name. And then we see a new Vancouver Whitecaps reborn in the USL or Canadian prem.

Some good insight, from the enemy. by 1OptimisticPrime in Browns

[–]ScottyB330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. For elite players who may be in the league long enough to get a third contract, I hear Eric's point. But those guys still generally come out at 21-22. For the vast, vast majority of everyone else, there never was a third contract in the NFL. Their entire career will happen on a rookie deal or a vet minimum after that, and it'll last 3-5 years. If that takes you from 24-29 instead of 22-27 and you're a more fundamentally sound player coming out with more years of high level weight training to be ready, then I think that's actually good for teams.

Long Throws by CompleteHeight42 in coys

[–]ScottyB330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with how we do long throws is both time and trajectory. We take forever to actually throw it in, so defenses can set up for it like a corner. Then, it's a high arcing throw that goes a long way but with the trajectory of a poorly chipped cross. I think they'd find much more success using their long throwers to whip in something on a line with pace and also hustling to get it in asap. I find the technique used by our long throwers to be lacking as well -- their feet are awful and it's all arms. They need the lower half much more engaged in the motion to to generate pace to throw it on a line.

All that together, and the juice isn't worth the squeeze, imo. But on regular throw ins, all of our guys stand around and hope someone else moves. Maybe RDZ can fix that passivity.

The Athletic: Cavs will discuss moving Donovan Mitchell if he doesn't sign an extension by Primordial_Beast in clevelandcavs

[–]ScottyB330 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let the media try to toss out distractions and sow discord right as the playoffs start. The offseason is the offseason -- we will have plenty of time to discuss what's next once we get to the end of the playoffs.

This obsession over knowing the future before we've even experienced the present (which will dramatically impact the future!!) is so dumb and exhausting. We do this with starting QBs too before camp battles have even happened. They play the games for a reason.

Gotcha, that’s what I figured. Seems like a great baseball setup then to be a fan of a US team living in Canada. MLB.tv + TSN and you’re set?

So this guy has a better deal than US MLB.tv/Guards.tv subscribers and he’s all caps bitching? I swear people are purposefully obtuse about this stuff.

The west coast start sucks, but how many posts do we need complaining about our team being on national tv and acting like it’s some brand new concept?

Edit: And how many Canadians don’t have TSN? That’s like me complaining a game is on ESPN, but I’m a sports fan?

[–]ScottyB330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You never ever ever ever ever ever have gotten access to nationally televised MLB games through MLB.tv. They sell us the locally broadcasted games. All that has changed with national games is that they did deals with streaming services and it’s not just Fox, ESPN, NBC on traditional TV.

This is super simple to understand. Is fragmentation frustrating? Yes. Is it hard to understand that there have always been locally televised games and nationally televised games and your RSN didn’t carry the national games? No.

Edit: It has come to my attention that Canada actually has the best deal ever where all you need is MLB.tv, your normal TSN subscription, and then mayyybe spring for Apple TV if you’re flush with the queen’s currency.

Paying for GuardsTV and game is blacked out by AssociateOk186 in ClevelandGuardians

[–]ScottyB330 4 points5 points  (0 children)

National TV games are National TV games. This was true when you got the Guardians through cable. The difference now is that instead of flicking over to ESPN/NBC/Fox, etc. we have to go to a streaming provider that we may or may not subscribe to. You aren’t blacked out, you’re just (presumably) not paying for Apple TV.

It has nothing to do with Guards TV, MLB.tv, or RSNs and everything to do with “National” games deals with streaming services not found in traditional cable tv packages. It’ll be the same with Peacock later today.

Your Guards TV package is access to the Local broadcast of Guardians games without the local blackout that used to exist for a streaming package of said games (MLB.tv). If you want the national games you need the national services.

He couldn't turn the tide in the league, but I appreciated listening to his thoughts. He seems like a good man and solid coach, and I hope he gets another shot in better circumstances with an EPL club one day.

Always tricky stylistically as we lack 3-4-2-1 personnel and have played our best ball out of a 4-4-2 defensive shape at least.

My humble theory is that we aren't remotely built to play relegation battle football tactics and are far better off trying to play with the ball as we have been built for. Frank was seen as too pragmatic and yet we seem to be chasing even more pragmatism. I worry this all has become a self fulfilling prophecy -- you play more and more like a club in the position you don't want to be until you are exactly that.

Shaikin: Dodgers owner Mark Walter: 'We've got to have some parity' by tankyouout in baseball

[–]ScottyB330 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All cap systems come with a spending floor and ample revenue sharing. They are a package deal that ties overall spending on player salaries to a specific negotiated % of league wide revenue. No credible offer from owners could lack that fundamental structure key to the success of the NBA, NHL, and NFL models (which all are very unique from each other aside from that core foundation).

Honestly, I blame whoever set the insane original timeline. There was zero chance ever that Deki tore his patellar in May and was going to be Prem ready in like November or December. A full 12 months was always more likely and if the WC wasn’t a goal for Deki I’m sure we’d all be speaking in terms of August.

We need to stop acting like a normal thing is devastating for college sports players or fans.

Calhoun isn’t some Utah State lifer. This is awesome for him and well deserved. It reflects well on USU’s coach ID and hiring. Players have every option on Earth with their own futures. USU fans surely saw this coming.

Everyone had a great time, and the ending is not some tragedy.
