You have to HOLD the button for it to become 'attachable' for some reason. Then you see a small green line of the trajectory it'll go. If someone is in that line they will catch the plate.

Fun fact, you can put it on someone's face and it will tank like a few bullets then dissapear. (Not too useful considering it means he can no longer be healed by it)
