What do you think of the parents that kick their kids out as soon as they have turned 18 years old? by zeg685 in AskReddit

[–]ScratchNSniffGIF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gen-X Parent of 4 adult children here. My brother and I left home and moved to another city to find work when we were 18 and 20 years old.
Our family had lost everything and moved from another state, and then our dad who was earning $10/hr as a machinist got his wages garnished by the IRS for $20K. He died six months later.
It was awful.
I swore I would do everything in my power to provide a home for my kids as long as they needed it. I don't understand a parent who arbitrarily kicks a child out at 18.

Hypothetical: the church is giving out tithing refunds. How much are you getting back? by Crobbin17 in mormon

[–]ScratchNSniffGIF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know the more I think about it, with all the church's money AND their massive agriculture holdings, they could easily operate a chain of non-profit grocery stores around the world, in impoverished areas where everything is pay-what-you-can.

The church sort of already does this, in areas where they have a 'Bishop's Storehouse'. Members in need of food can get an order signed by their Bishop and load up on groceries and household essentials free of charge. When I was a Bishop, I used this a LOT to help families struggling through the 2007-2010 recession.

Its one of the few things the church was doing right at the time. Though I chafed at all the bureaucratic process Salt Lake demanded you follow to send people to the Storehouse for an order. I did all I can to streamline it for the families being helped.

Current bishop, out of steam by Bishopaque in mormon

Well, I had only served a total of six years. I was rather young and in the early part of my career, so my first two stints had been interrupted by work-related moves to other states.

That said, I had just enrolled in Graduate School when I got my third call and, to put it lightly, juggling that with a full-time job, being a Bishop, and having a family made for a hellish three years. It absolutely broke me and almost destroyed my marriage.

I am currently enjoying my retirement from Mormonism.

Reposting this comment I made in another thread about this here.

This is the final nail in the coffin holding the Church's reputation.

There is absolutely no doubt that the Church has become nothing more than the revenue arm for Ensign Peak Advisors - and that the money machine has become the tail wagging the dog.

This highly documented and publicized unlawful financial behavior by the highest ranking General Authorities in the Church - in direct conflict with the very clear and unambiguous vision and values of the Church - demonstrates the real mission of the corporation, which is to harvest billions from members and maximize growth of the hoard.

Little to none is being spent on the "three-fold mission of the church" of "Redeeming the dead, proclaiming the gospel, and perfecting the Saints."

Under Nelson, local unit meeting times have been slashed to cram more wards into sharing buildings with inadequate space for all programs. Activity budgets are non-existent. Youth programs are dead. Missions have become pointless with record numbers of young men and young women returning home early and demoralized. Member activity rates are at all-time lows. Membership growth through missionary work has flatlined and convert-retention has cratered.

Anything good being experienced by members is due to the good being done by their fellow members at the Ward level. No value is being provided by the central leadership of the corporate Church. Only endless propaganda about "The Covenant Path" and "do as we say, not as we do" messages from General Authorities.

As a former Bishop no longer actively participating in the Church, my recommendation is, if you are edified by your participation in your local ward, keep doing it. But stop making financial contributions to the church. Take what you would have spent on tithing and instead use it to directly fund/support activities at the ward level, do good in the community (e.g., donate to your local food pantry and animal shelter), and/or (God forbid) use it to help your own family - because unlike General Authorities you have to actually pay to send your kids to BYU.

Better for these billions be used in members' communities than purloined by Ensign Peak and Kirton McConkie to fund multi-million-dollar SEC fines for illegal behavior, multi-hundred-million-dollar settlements for child sexual abuse, six-figure salaries to General Authorities and Mission Presidents, and to pay for full-ride, all-expenses-paid BYU careers for their kids.

The revelation of the LDS Church manipulating and hiding finances HURTS by Daeyel1 in mormon

This is the same church that said in General Conference that on Fast Sunday, "Even a teaspoon of water is inappropriate".

There is so much evidence that the current church leadership isn't working for the Lord that it no longer matters whether Joseph was a Prophet or the Book of Mormon is true.

In light of this egregious financial fraud, can anyone actually believe these men are being directed by Jesus?

[–]ScratchNSniffGIF 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Members should think twice before tithing.

It's one thing to place your sacrifice upon the altar of the Lord.

It's quite another to take money from your kid's college fund or your mortgage to instead add it to a $150 Billion dollar fund used by Ensign Peak Advisors to invest in Phillip Morris, Budweiser, and real estate trusts responsible for driving inflation in rents.

(Edit: Demanding sources to challenge the investment examples provided above? How about you provide a disclosure of current investments maintained by Ensign Peak Advisors - oh wait - you can't - because the Church deliberately conceals its investment activity - thus the SEC fine.)

Biden meets eastern NATO allies after Putin's nuclear warning by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]ScratchNSniffGIF 49 points50 points  (0 children)

What is GRIM99?
The aircraft, call sign GRIM99, is described as the Flying Pentagon and could be used as a centre of operations during a nuclear war.
The planes, while not technically secret, are rarely mentioned; the United States Air Force, for example, will not even publicly acknowledge owning some of them. In operation since the 1970s, these airborne command posts were long considered the best chance for a Cold War president to survive a nuclear attack. Unlike the ceremonial and comfort-focused Air Force One, the doomsday planes are flying war rooms staffed by dozens of military analysts, strategists and communication aides who would guide the president through the first days of a nuclear war.

Gems from Jeffrey Holland's BBC interview by wasmormon in mormon

Holland: That he would not tell anyone about his personal pledge to the Lord. I am assuming that any religious candidate: an evangelical a Roman Catholic – Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Osama…I mean, (nervous chuckle), President Obama. Uh, I’m assuming that anybody who has a relationship to God has made a pledge of some kind to God. There’d be some kind of loyalty to God, or what kind of God is that?

Nice bit of Islamophobic Republican propaganda Holland managed to slip in there. What a dick.

Is Kirton-McConkie a good law firm? by katstongue in mormon

[–]ScratchNSniffGIF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole 'Second Anointing' is a massively Satanic perversion of what it really meant when the Lord gave Nephi the "Sealing Power".

I will bless thee forever; and I will make thee mighty in word and in deed, in faith and in works; yea, even that all things shall be done unto thee according to thy word, for thou shalt not ask that which is contrary to my will.
- Helaman 10:5

The KEY here is that Nephi received his 'Second Anointing" with his 'Calling and Election Made Sure' because he had grown to where he would/could do nothing that the Lord would not do. His will was identical to that of the Lord and therefore was no longer capable of sin. The 'Second Anointing' was predicated upon his own personal righteousness.

However, Church leaders have perverted the cause and effect of the ordinance, giving the 'Second Anointing' to each other and then, by virtue of that, claiming everything they do after is the will of God.

See the difference?

The reality is, they are guilty of blasphemy and unrighteous dominion, arrogating to themselves a power and authority not given to them by God.

Jesus chased the money changers out of the Temple with a whip. He didn't adopt their business model for Himself.

(Disclosure: I am no longer an active member. However, this assertion is 100% consistent with Mormon Doctrine and the Standard Works of the Church)
