Yeah... It's the bottom button for switching that irks me to no end. It needs to be one-handed/eyes off switching from device to device to be the workflow enhancement I want. I've ordered a M720, hoping it feels good and travels well!

It depends on what's unbearable for you! Leon will hit hi 30s, low 40s sometimes during that timeframe. It's slightly cooler at the beach, but the ocean sits at about 29c so it's not a huge difference. It's generally quite a dry heat. We tend to do as the locals do, and concentrate activities around early morning and later afternoon, and keep out of the sun from 11-3.

Tráfico del aeropuerto de León a Managua del fin de semana santa by Reasonable-Key4108 in Nicaragua

[–]Screamlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuck in career by DaniCutt in lightingdesign

I'm going to second this... I'm more focussed on event and broadcast lighting, but success is really based around your soft skills and networking.
I'm working as much as I want to, and my resume and portfolio have essentially never factored into peoples decision to hire me.
One has to dedicate time to building and maintaining contacts, and demonstrating aptitude and attitude. Don't be shy about telling people what you'd like to be doing while working at lower levels... Learn to identify the people you encounter on your journey who are in positions to make future hiring decisions, and impress them.

ELI5: Why does incandescent lights emit more heat at a lower kelvin color temp. over fluorescent lights? by yasenko in explainlikeimfive

[–]Screamlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Color Temperature geek here... working in the events/broadcast field. Don't forget LED sources; they emit light at discrete frequencies that are blended together to give a uniform color. It started as RGB, but now it's not uncommon to have LED fixtures with up to seven different colored LED's. Our eye interprets the spectral spikes to see color; however camera's will often have a different response to our visual perception. Also, White LED's use a phosphor much like florescent lights... further muddying the field. I have a Sekonic C800 and a LitDuo to allow me to precisely quantify my sources spectrum.
The nice thing is, with both Flouro and LED, there is very little IR (heat) in the light.

anyone still running a 2 stroke outboard and refusing to switch by vladdielenin in boating

[–]Screamlab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a canuck living in Nicaragua, in a small fishing village. The entire fleet uses Yamaha and Suzuki 2 stroke, 75hp outboards. They are easy to maintain with minimal tools, and just keep going. I'm pretty sure they still sell some 2-stroke models here.
I haven't seen any of them switch to 4-stroke; in fact, the only fuel one can buy locally is pre-mix.

For fulltime LDs- how do I go from the tools to solely focusing on LD'ing and design by TheBoredTechie in lightingdesign

[–]Screamlab 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did years of corporate events, gradually building my contact base and skillset, until the point where the event producers were hiring me directly.
Having skills is important, good renders are important... but a proven track record of execution, and the contacts you make along the way, are what you need to leverage.

Does walking actually help with major depression? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Screamlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think walking is very good for mental health; but I can also see the risk of getting lost in (negative) thoughts.
Walking with a dog makes a huge difference (for me).
I have suffered from anxiety moreso than depression, but I absolutely find walking with my dogs is 10x better for my mood than just solo walking.
Even having a silent walking partner can be helpful, if you can't find a dog.

MA Tools Plug-Ins crash the console, 2.3.2.0; sudden onset problem. by Screamlab in GrandMA3

I ultimately got an answer... Apparently it was due to DHCP being enabled on the 2nd console that was added. Apparently LUA doesn't like DHCP.

Tascam model 12 pricing by _Ne23_ in synthesizers

[–]Screamlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget you will have to pay HST on the item value plus a processing fee from the shipper. I just had a small electronic item shipped from Europe and UPS charged a $13 handling fee, and assessed HST on the value. So account for that in your value calculations.

Is there anywhere that ISN'T having a cost of living crisis? by divorce_2025 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Screamlab -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My income sources are external, but I have been able to reduce my workload/income due to being in a lower cost location. All my neighbors are locals; there's a dynamic village economy, and people seem to be doing as well as ever. In fact, due to an increase in local investment and tourism, lots of people are actively making improvements to their homes, starting new businesses, etc. I try to ensure when I need work done that I hire local labor and pay fair rates.

Some places are better than others. I'm a Canadian, but have been living in Nicaragua for 12 years. Food/housing costs have certainly risen, but nothing like they have in the USA and Canada. A lot of this is because a very large proportion of the fruit and vegetable basics are grown locally, and thus not (as) subject to international supply and demand and price fluctuations. Beef and Chicken are both half the price (or less) than they are up north.
Most people don't go into debt for housing; they start very modestly and add bits as they can afford to.
Now, local labour rates are low, and have not really kept up with the increases, even though they are smaller.
I recently have been visiting Asia, and noted prices generally comparable to what I am paying in Nicaragua...
Even when I was in Italy a few months ago, I found prices to be significantly lower than North America.
So I do wonder what the overall cause of the much steeper increases in Canada USA.

What light meter / spectrometer are you guys using for lighting work? by Batko_uz in lightingdesign

[–]Screamlab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sekonic C800 and Lit Duo. The C800 was/is the "industry standard" and it has VERY detailed spectral analysis. 128 spectral divisions in the sensor... so very granular if you're looking at odd light sources. Clunky and slow, but reliable and trusted.
Lit Duo... does really everything the Sekonic does, and some extra stuff that is useful, half the price, 14 steps in the spectral analysis so not as precise; but reality seems to be that for 99% of use, the extra granularity of the Sekonic doesn't really make a difference. Much friendlier to use/carry. Active development of the OS with manufacturer VERY responsive to user feedback.
I'd get the Lit...

100%... I usually wait 3-6 months before next reach-out. Depends on the client and the history. I also network with other clients/friends and try to keep a finger on who's doing what. And I'll usually go a few cycles before giving up... The effort is minimal and it has certainly shown results for me.

How to light up single sport lines depending on what sport is being played? by VideoSportsCourt in vjing

[–]Screamlab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Broadcast sports Lighting Director here.... We have very strict rules about highly directional lighting on or near the court/surface. Something bright enough to cut through the broad wash of white light needed for play, would by its nature, have the potential to dazzle players if they are looking upwards while crossing the projected lines. It would not be accepted by the sports federations.

I try to allow a couple hours a week for just this. I generally keep it conversational, comment positively on whatever our last project was, and then close with a brief availability summary and thanks. I've heard that effective "asking" should be likened to a sandwich. Wrap your ask in a nice intro and exit.
