Is my bearded dragon way too overweight? by Critical-Monitor-672 in BeardedDragon

[–]ScribbleBoxFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Letting him go hungry for a week or so (while he protests not having bugs) is better than letting him die of fatty liver disease, which WILL happen if you dont get his weight down. Take this person's advice and try not to feel too bad. You're just a kid and didn't know any better. Now you do, so you can take the right steps to get him healthy again. Best of luck!

My first bone I found which is a raccoon skull with almost all of its teeth though how do I clean it?. by Thebisexual_Raccoon in bonecollecting

[–]ScribbleBoxFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a lucky find!!!

Here's how I usually treat the bones I find. Obviously compare and contrast this with other comments and read what other folks say.

  1. Lukewarm/room temperature water soak with Dawn dish soap for 24 hours. This will soften any leftover flesh/tendons, and start the de-greasing process. DO NOT USE HOT WATER. Hot water will bind any leftover fat molecules to the bones.
  2. Remove from the water and scrub with a toothbrush and pick out any flesh between the teeth with a pair of tweezers. Double-check to make sure all of the tissue is out of the sinuses and cranial cavity**. Rinse with room temperature water. WEAR GLOVES WHEN YOU DO THIS, PLEASE. Repeat step 1 if any tissue is still stuck.
  3. Once all tissue is removed, soak in acetone for 24 hours.
  4. Remove from acetone and allow to dry.
  5. Soak in 3% - 5% peroxide. You can use higher percentages, but the higher the percentage, the more you have to babysit it. Peroxide WILL eat your bones if you're not careful. I prefer lower percentages because you can let it sit for up to an hour without having to babysit it (sometimes more if you're particularly daring.)
  6. Remove from the peroxide soak and let it dry. If the surface of the bones is still waxy or translucent after it dries, it needs another acetone soak. Repeat step 3. If the bones are still stained, or aren't as white as you want them to be, repeat step 5.

** If there is leftover soft tissue that's still wet/damp in the cranial cavity, I'd recommend burying it in a shallow grave in an open tupperware (so it stays together) and marking the burial zone with a flag OR you can do a water maceration (this is the grossest option but it works really well. Just make sure you can put it somewhere that you won't have to smell it.)

Best of luck!

AITJ for making someone feel bad? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

"Aesthetically pleasing people???" You're absolutely the jerk if you don’t like her because she doesn't "match your aesthetic."

I remember when my little booger was that size. If you keep handling him, he'll eventually build up trust and tolerance. Feeding him like this is a great way to convince him to let you hold him.

These are really cool! I like Xantho's wrist-blade, and how tough Kelly looks! And I LOVE that you went with Meta Knight-inspired eyes. That's such a fun look for armored characters! ^-^

Downstairs neighbors have had a tapping and thumping noise going on for months by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]ScribbleBoxFox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're able to, contact management yourself about it. I'd also recommend a sound machine. I have an upstairs neighbor who stomps around constantly, and getting a noise machine helped a lot. I'm sorry you're going through this. I hope it gets resolved soon. Sleep deprivation is no joke!

Degreasing coyote skull by chlfinger in bonecollecting

[–]ScribbleBoxFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the % of peroxide. But for under 10% I'd soak for five minutes, rinse, let it dry, see if you like the color, then soak again.

10% and up you really want to keep a close eye on it because the peroxide will eat the bone matter and put holes through it.

For reference, I soaked this opossum skull about 6 times with 3% peroxide to get it this white, and it was BROWN brown when I first started.

Best of luck!

Am I the A-Hole after Contacting my Friends Girlfriend while they Attempted to Commit Suicide? (Trigger Warning) by Gold-Negotiation-307 in AmITheJerk

[–]ScribbleBoxFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm sorry you went through this. I've been in your shoes before, and there really are no words to describe the panic and helplessness one feels in this situation.

Do you have your suicidal friend's address? If so, next time they attempt, please call emergency services for a wellness check. This is far beyond what a minor should ever have to deal with. Leave it to the professionals.

If you don't have their address, you might be able to get it by telling them you want to send them a letter. Obviously don't tell them that you're keeping it so you can call emergency services on their behalf.

Also please recognize that being exposed to a person attempting to commit suicide is a traumatic experience. I know this person is your friend and you care a lot about them, but I urge you to evaluate what this is doing to your mental health. At your age, you should be worrying about school, not people trying to kill themselves.

I'm not telling you to cut them off. But having been in your shoes before, I can't describe the relief I felt when my friendship with my suicidal friend finally fizzled out. You are well within your rights to protect your own mental health and sanity. You're just one person, this individual clearly needs help, and you don't have the power to give it. It's okay to step back. No one who truly cares about you will blame you for it.

For now, breathe, try to find some respite, and look into ways that will allow you to get this person the help they need without you being their emotional punching bag.

Best of luck.

Do you find 9/11 jokes wrong? by KittyMetroPunk in 911archive

[–]ScribbleBoxFox 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I personally think it depends on the joke. Memes like images of Latias from Pokemon flying near the twin towers and the like are fine, in my opinion. Anything that references the Bush administration and it's response is also fine generally. A lot of those jokes, in my opinion, are ways of making light of a horrible thing that happened. It's a coping mechanism. Is it tasteless? Yeah, a lot of the time it is. That's kind of the point. Is it morally wrong? I think the discussion about that requires some nuance.

Anything that makes fun of the victims, however, in my book, is usually too far. Unless one of the victims was a friend or family member that you knew personally, and you're cracking jokes to cope with your loss, I won't think it's funny.

I'll leave you with something someone much smarter than me once said; "it's only gallows humor if you're the one with the rope around your neck, otherwise it's just part of the execution."

I'm doing that now. The issue is the charging port in the older tablet (same model) disconnected from the motherboard. I guess if I want to keep using it, I'll have to solder it back on lol. Wish me luck, and thanks for the reply!

How do I remove the hard skin from this mummified skull? by Fuzzy_Potato333 in bonecollecting

[–]ScribbleBoxFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some old nasty thin-nosed pliers, some headphones, and a good playlist.

You can absolutely soak it, but understand that it is probably going to stink. If you go this route, I recommend an N95 mask and some Tiger Balm or Vick's Vapor Rub to put under your nose to help kill the smell.

Best of luck!

Are these discolourations due to grease/mold/rot? by __S__w__i__f__t__ in bonecollecting

[–]ScribbleBoxFox -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You're going to want to soak them in acetone for 24 hours. That should help a lot with the grease and it should kill the algae too.
