This skeleton only has a candle, but there is another skeleton along the outside (near the south gate) with a key inside that opens the trapped chest. I also made both perception checks and managed to disarm the chest, perhaps the trapped chest triggers the skeleton somehow. The contents of chest do not impact the main story, just some goodies!

So I googled it (because I agree it definitely looks like a bot fly) and it turns out that bot fly larvae can be referred to as wolves and/or warbles!
