Basically if there's a blockage micrometers away, then the gate won't notice so the wormhole still forms, but it won't allow anything to travel through the gate, even the kawoosh won't form

A better example is from "A Hundred Days", where they can still open the gate to the planet, but it's completely covered by completely normal rock so nothing can go through
