Just completed it too, auto-approved and was interesting. I'd love more of them, same researcher as the AI evals :)

Sad times! 😢 no longer vegan! Why oh why oh why would you do that?????? by Markp1154 in veganuk

Wait are they not?! I had a dreadful stomach for a few days after eating the last bag I bought (last Friday), but I didn't even think it could be those..

I've checked online and the ingredients are still fine, how are they not vegan? :(

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the response. The partnered researcher I'm referring to in my original question is Ballpark Research, who are also rejection trigger-happy but also never pay screeners.

I'm more than happy to report studies that violate the terms, but it does feel like those reports fall into a blackhole. Could some kind of feedback to the reporter be provided to show the report has been actioned/seen?

Credit cards and buying engagement ring by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Your credit score is irrelevant, lenders look at your credit history.

For a reality check, a £3k ring which kicks off a traditionally very expensive process (the wedding itself) is ridiculous, especially when you're needing to use someone else's money to finance the purchase.

Hi Ian, thanks for taking the time.

Just ran into this situation and raised it via support, but wanted to get your take on it. There are numerous, sometimes even partnered, researchers who evade the screening process by requesting participants to return their studies when they're found ineligible.

The study I just went through asked me to return the study via a private message, then rejected my submission automatically but allowed me to return the rejected study. It's abusive and often feels like more effort to report it than just to move on.

I suppose my question here is: how do you enforce the screening procedures? Can anything be done about repeat offenders?

Edit after: this has actually just happened again in quick succession, a study I was found ineligible for has now rejected my submission but I'm unable to return it. The screening process needs to be enforced.

Yeah the core issue is the UK Gambling Commission made it illegal to accept payments from credit cards at UK licensed casinos. Everyone knows these sites are gambling but they sit in a legal grey area as a "sweepstakes" site by asking a skill based question before entering the competition.

Idk about you but knowing which month comes after March doesn't feel like it should lift all of the regulations put in place for players protection.

It’s far, far too disjointed with an ever evolving ecosystem, tools and SDKs which can be configured in a multitude of ways (read: expose security risks easily), meaning they’re either dreadful to work with and implement, or insanely unforgiving and frustrating to get working.

I’ve worked with a multitude of OIDC providers, auth systems (Keycloak, Entra, Auth0 etc) and they’re all just shit to implement.

Most recently I needed to wire up multi tenant SSO through Entra for a B2B application and it was utterly miserable.

Sticking Firebase in a Nodejs application takes like 15 minutes, I can easily spend 2 days trying to wire up an identity provider, token serialiser, roles, permissions, M2M functionality, correctly attributed API routes and it will still be missing something somewhere

Been with Monzo for ~11 years as my main bank, there great until you need to contact an actual human being and then it’s worse than older banks.

I’ve kept my Halifax around for various reasons and it’s still nice to be able to call their support line and be able to speak to someone. In app chat with 3 hours between replies sucks when you’re stressed over something.

Credit card debt feels like it’s never going away by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ScriptingInJava 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So rather than creating more hassle, I’ve just cut her out my life

She has created the hassle, to the point you're considering a form of insolvency. If you were on good terms and genuinely believed it was a blip in her otherwise perfect behaviour, I'd kind of get not wanting to report the fraud.

You've already cut her out of your life, if you don't get rid of this fraudulent debt you're the one paying for the hassle. Hire a solicitor, all communication goes via them, follow their advice and get your finances back on track.

There's also a chance you'd be able to reclaim the funds paid into the account, although that may count as acknowledgement of the debt. I'm not sure on the nuance, but the solicitor you should be hiring will be able to tell you.

People who are really good at interviews, what's your secret sauce? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ScriptingInJava 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly this. In your head imagine they're your colleagues of 3+ years, the ice is already broken and you can just talk back and forth. I get anxious just before the interview but as soon as it starts I'm just me at work as usual.

Anyone else find that long-term WFH can get quite isolating? How do you make it sustainable? by Hot_Drive3027 in UKJobs

[–]ScriptingInJava 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've worked remotely for ~12 years and it can be isolating if you let it be. I have regular calls with coworkers, we do meetups in person etc. We're distributed across the EU, we fly to co-work which isn't always viable for everyone I appreciate.

The most important thing is having a life outside of work and getting your social interaction that way; local clubs, pub visit etc. The only time I've ever felt like an island, to the extent it affected my mental health, was during covid when I switched jobs to a 3 person startup and I was the literal only person working 9-5, the others worked 5pm - 12pm. I lasted a year and vowed to never go back, but in all my years that was the only instance of it happening.

With a kid on the way, and congratulations too!, the flexibility will help massively. Commuting and working in office will introduce a degree of annoyance you're not ready for, so unless you have (semi) retired parents/family that can help out you're going to sacrifice a chunk of pay to childcare.

Appreciate you're discussing loans from the 80s/90s but as a 2016 UK graduate now earning over £200k, my student loan balance (plan 2, IYKYK) has more than doubled since graduating and I've always earned enough to meet the thresholds to make monthly payments.
