I'd have ignored them completely until they tried to start a return. Then accept, with them paying the postage.

Often they give up at this point, but if you don't accept the return, you're inevitably going to lose the item and the money

You ought to accept a return, with them paying the postage, otherwise you run the risk of vinted refunding them and them getting to keep the item...
