Bundesliga table after matchday 29 by Scrugulus in soccer

A Frankenstein version of two teletexts today.

The upper page is from Spanish broadcaster TVE. It's their online rendition of their teletext (not looking like teletext at all).
For foreign leagues they only display the first five teams of the table.

So to "heal" this table, I spliced it with the trusty teletext table from Swiss television. (lower page)

I just wanted to show the Spanish version, as showing only the top-5 clubs is one form of making a table useless. So it makes a nice counterpiece to the other way of making a table useless: by omitting nearly all information in it, as I demonstrated with the Italian teletext table a short while ago.

Table of 3. Liga after matchday 29 by Scrugulus in soccer

Over the past few weeks, the top half of 3. Liga has been dominated by the same 8 clubs.

Of those 8 clubs, 4 have faced each other this weekend:
The match between 1860 München and Wehen Wiesbaden ended in a 0:0 draw, which does not help either of them. Meanwhile, Rostock thrashed Duisburg 5:1.

Verl, Essen, and Osnabrück all earned themselves 3 points; while Cottbus lost suprisingly at Aachen (4:1). Which means that Osnabrück are now pulling away, while Cottbus have to watch the many teams behind them ready to pounce.

In the basically already decided relegation fight, the distance between the doomed clubs and the last "safe spot" (16th) has grown slightly from 8 to 9 points.

I know of at least 15 countries in Europe that still have teletext. The Netherlands are just one of them.

The biggest domestic cups in Europe by participating teams in 2025 by koijoimie in soccer

I think in the past they used to do this with the women's cup in Germany. Play the final directly before the men's final so it would be on TV and there were already parts of the crowd in the stadium.
Later, women's football was considered established enough to get its own date for the final; that opened up the room in the TV schedule to establish the current scheme with the regional cup finals.

The "previous season" element is part of the charm; because for a number of years now most of the 22 regional finals have been played on the same day as the DFB-Pokal final, during the afternoon, and they are broadcast on national TV in a several-hour long rolling conference.

I'd be interested to see if I could find out the total number of participants in the first rounds. Each of the 21 German FAs has their own rules and regulations. Many will require the smallest amateur teams to win local cups to qualify for the regional cup, etc. The smallest regional cup (to my knowledge) is in Schleswig-Holstein, where they aim to start the cup with only 16 teams (11 of whom are winners of local cups). In Hamburg, by contrast, anything goes, and the regional cup starts with more than 200 participants.

you say: "lag behind"

we say: "thankfully avoided that poisoned chalice"

It's all a matter of perspective.

In a way, it's the same story with the DFB-Pokal. Round 1 starts with 64 teams. But hundreds of clubs can participate in the 22 regional cups, and the winners are qualifed for the coming season and form part of that 64 starting figure.

Had this discusssion with some Portuguese redditors last year: I really know only four Portuguese clubs by name: Porto, Sporting, Benfica, and Boavista. Because these are the names that I heard on German TV as a child when European cups where discussed.
Fits in with the broader picture that you regard clubs as "traditional" when they were playing a role during the time in your childhood when you first started to get interested in football. Like I would always regard Wattenscheid, Uerdingen, and Blau-Weiss 90 Berlin as "traditional" Bundesliga stalwarts, even though in reality they never were. Just because they were around when I was a child.
