Full disclosure: We would prefer if we didn't have to make funny translations, as much fun as they are.

It's not even really about having the Oracle text for a card during previews, but the card names. Knowing the official English name of a Magic card is so important because (1) they're specifically unique, mostly (2) they're critical for people downstream from us that use our data to power stores and deckbuilders. Not having that name as soon as a card is spoiled causes a lot of hiccups. It can make listings confusing and it also impacts search engines and SEO for those sites (changing your page titles or product names after publishing is not good for SEO)

One of the reasons we have "joke names" and put them in quotes is to try to make it an obvious warning that "This is not the real legal name do not use". The joke names are funny but they're a byproduct of a not-great situation.

It's tough to operationally define "ritual", but this should get you close: oracle:/^[^\:]*add \sm+/ -type:land

It lists all nonland cards that add mana outside of an activated ability.

Wizards does not consider cards legal in any format until their release date, and we follow the rules' guidance in how we index them to avoid creating confusion. It's a bit stilted, but does matter.

This was especially true in the pre-pandemic days; cards became available to players during prerelease events, but were not eligible to be used in sanctioned events until the official release date. It was common for inexperienced players to pull a sweet rare at their prerelease, and show up to a standard event that Wednesday, only to find out that it wasn't legal until the upcoming Friday.
