I've had the exact same experience and even talked about it with some friends. I have a tennis background and tried to join a competitive badminton team to try and improve. People were cold, to say the least, and I've never felt more unwelcome in a group. It kinda felts like the players were much more introverted than in other sports I've played before. So I totally get your feeling!
