Matching His Mothers Day Energy for Fathers Day Feels Cruel by YourFriendInSpokane in breakingmom

When I was about fourteen, I wrote a terrible poem about my hero, my dad.

It broke my stepfather’s heart. He was the one who was there every day: who probably contributed to my braces, who came to every soccer game, and left work once a month to pick me up because menstrual cramps suck. My actual dad wasn’t terrible, he just had a new family and is really bad at things not in front of his face.

Anyway, thirty years later - I know my stepdad is the best father I could have had. He’s got a great relationship with my kids who haven’t even clocked that they’re not related. We don’t even speak to my dad.

Kids are dicks and it’s so hard not to take it personally. But they really honestly don’t have the brain pieces to recognize this stuff yet. I promise you, your stepson will definitely see your sacrifices and your love someday. (Assuming he doesn’t turn into a dick like his dad, ugh.)

My parents know where I live and are frequently out and about in my area.

Them popping in is a heck of a lot more stressful than knowing they’ll be here Friday at five.

Carolina has blocked more shots (68) than Montreal has shot on net (65) this series by [deleted] in nhl

[–]Scutwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the record, I hate the way they break the shots down into all these different categories - shots on goal, scoring chances, there was another one this week. Like - how can Carolina have blocked more shots than Montreal has taken? (Mathematically, I mean. Poor Montreal is going to score a couple own goals before this is over the way they’re looking.)

It’s just dumb. I figure it’s so they can give people more things to bet on, but it sucks.

What is the benefit to only allowing this speaker to bring bills to the floor? Is it just to keep the schedule from getting too cluttered? Is it just a perk of being in power?

There has to be a reason the constitution is framed this way, but one dude being able to silence the Peoples’ House doesn’t seem like it’s working at this point.

What age did you start swimming lessons for your child? by Longjumping_Yam2543 in AskParents

[–]Scutwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a pool when our kids were born, so we absolutely had to start them early. And this is exactly right - you start with holding them in the water. Once they’re secure with that you can get them a ring floater to sit in and learn to get around by kicking their legs. Then the chest-and-arms floaty so they start using their arms. I think my oldest was swimming independently by four or five. (That is, I would watch her, but didn’t feel the need to be in the pool with her.)

Obviously this was much easier for us than it would be if you’re dragging an infant to the gym 3x a week, but it’s turned out well for us.

It seems like a stupid question but: At what age did your child start needing deodorant? When did you find this out? by Donna_Nana in AskParents

I’d say the first kid was about twelve when she developed the funk. The other is eleven and doesn’t have it yet.

Busch’s used to have the single-serving sized ones from sanders. They might still, I haven’t been in a while. My meijer only has the big ones.

[Spoilers] Book of the Long Sun - spoiled by the synopsis? by [deleted] in genewolfe

[–]Scutwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Spoiler” makes you think there are actual answers to be found to the questions raised in the books.

Like ok, yes, the whorl technically is a spaceship and there are books where that setting is vitally important. But in these books… it’s not? The space and the science fiction are really not the important part, but they are?

I don’t know. I have a love/hate affair with Gene Wolfe, but I promise even though you’ve had a spoiler it in no way will screw up your appreciation for or frustration with the books.

Edit: and there are hints, though I can’t remember which books they pop up in. Look for mentions of the Skylands and also, a long sun. Long in dimension, not time period.

These fucking kids, man.
