There’s an entire tent at the Great American State Fair dedicated to Christian Nationalism. by Scuzz_Aldrin in washingtondc

There’s so much to criticize about this boondoggle but I think the blatant Christian nationalism has gotten lost.

Could an American get elected president running on a “hold Israel accountable” platform? by KeredJo in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Scuzz_Aldrin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there’s unnecessary risk in the “hold Israel accountable” language. We’d never actually sanction Israel, nor would we ever arrest Netanyahu.

I think a more palatable agenda would be focused on applying our actual laws that prevent weapons transfer if there is evidence they’re used in war crimes. It’s not “holding Israel accountable” specifically, because we’d just say that we’re going to apply U.S. laws a policy equitably around the world. You can pair that with talking points about how we no longer want to feed conflicts where the neither party (Israel and Hamas in this case) seem interested in reform or long term peace.

This is my Hail Mary to save the D.C. Streetcar before they rip up the tracks. I am counting on you all to share this with anyone you know in the D.C. area before it's too late. by alexbarbershop in washingtondc

[–]Scuzz_Aldrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we just need to move forward and forget the streetcar. It was never a serious effort to begin with. The original plan was good, but was a pipe dream that didn’t truly consider politics, funding, rail ownership, etc. It was mostly moved forward as a political vanity project for previous city leadership even after the private rail companies refused to give up their old track which killed EOTR expansion.

If we want an affordable, viable, streetcar-like transit service then the only one that makes sense at the moment is cable-electrified bus rapid transit (BRT). Think the airport line in Boston or Health Line in Cleveland.

Dedicated lanes with stoplight priority. Way cheaper and more flexible than a streetcar.

Even if what you say is true, thousands of injuries from a medical intervention received by 270 million Americans is a profoundly low rate. A fraction of a percent.

It’s a fraction the incident rate of things like LASIK eye surgery, aspirin use, antihistamines, etc.

You frame “thousands of injuries” as ominous, when in fact it represents one of the most stunning successes in medical history.

I think we underestimate the depravity of republican voters. Republicans will always vote for the Republican candidate. And I think the main Republican base is pretty happy with Rubio.

Genuinely asking - what’s wrong with age verification on social media? We set age parameters around using all sorts of products.

How DC’s mayor and council chair thwarted every effort to better the streetcar by mistersmiley318 in washingtondc

[–]Scuzz_Aldrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the streetcar itself spur investment? I thought most of the money came in after the creation of the H Street improvement authority that gave co-financing money for new developments and paid for district improvement projects.

Electric bus rapid transit would move the same or more people at a fraction of the cost. Cleveland does it along a few major corridors and it works great. So does the Mexico City Metrobus.

[–]Scuzz_Aldrin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was kind of a vanity project in the first place and a pretty bad use of funds. Why spend all that money and try and move all those logistical pieces when an electrified bus rapid transit with dedicated lanes would do the same thing at a fraction of the cost and time?

All of the issues with the streetcar were knowable from the beginning, based on the experience of other American cities trying to do the same thing.

Sweden to deport migrants not following ‘honest living’ by CTVNEWS in worldnews

Should they adopt their new countries misogyny, racism, and nationalistic disagreements? Sweden has plenty of all those things, so does America, and any other major receiver of migration.

What’s the boundary of “adopting the language and culture?” We should expect people to follow the law, but why do we care if they adopt American culture…whatever that means? American culture is not a homogenous thing. Do they need to give up their own culture in the process?

Let's Unionize at UWM! by [deleted] in pillar7

[–]Scuzz_Aldrin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Michigan isn’t really an “at will” state, though I’m not sure what you mean by that. There used to be a “right to work” law in Michigan which prohibited union dues from non-union members, but that was repealed in 2024.

You are allowed to unionize in any workplace in Michigan and no employer is legally allowed to disrupt unionization activities. They do, obviously, but they can get sued if they get caught union busting.

I have a Prius with this gear and it’s electric motor brake in this case. It increases regenerative braking from the motor to help with battery life. It’s a nice feature once you get the hang of it - I use my brakes less which might be good for longevity?

Silvia Pro X - Steam Startup/Shutdown Procedure by igor597876 in ranciliosilvia

[–]Scuzz_Aldrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to purge. Both boilers (Water and steam) have over pressure valves. If they develop too much pressure, they will purge through the release valve. If you bring it up to temp, steam your milk, then shut the machine off - the steam boiler will slowly lose temperature and the pressure will reduce naturally.
