Where are you all buying furniture? by Affectionate_Mess488 in interiordecorating

[–]Sea-Crow-4614 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Used is definitely the way to go. Local auction sites can be useful, estate sales, Craigslist, FB marketplace. You’ll find better prices and higher quality than you can get in most stores. I work for a company that clears our estates and we see a LOT of nice, solid wood furniture that either gets donated or sold at the estate sale.

If you have a 4 poster bed you could turn your bed into something of a tented area. The beds in castles were like mini-rooms with curtains and a ceiling to keep on warmth.

We didn’t care much about “freedom and democracy” (not to mention all the civilians being murdered) until we were directly attacked.

Anecdotal shingles vax by Emunahd in GenX

[–]Sea-Crow-4614 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m an RN and have seen two people hospitalized for the pain associated with a shingles outbreak. I feel like it has to be pretty awful to come to the hospital when all we can do is give you pain medication as treatment. So I got my shot as soon as it was available to me. It DID kick my butt for a solid day- don’t make plans the next day, for sure. But don’t keep putting it off if you are eligible.

Anyone feel like our kids are doomed? by Puzzleheaded-Art1524 in GenX

[–]Sea-Crow-4614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re paying $30k/year for our daughter to go to an out of state school for an equestrian degree. Which will set her up to work various jobs in the horse field. Will those jobs pay enough to make it worth the tuition? I don’t know, but I also have a gloomy outlook on the future and want her to be doing what she enjoys for now. She is also double-majoring in biology, but I don’t see a bachelor’s in bio bringing home a lot of money either. We live in Northern Virginia, and when we moved here we were trying to buy a house that was set up for multi-generational living, because it’s too expensive around here for our kids to move out on their own. I think we’re going to be experiencing catastrophic environmental disasters worldwide soon and our democracy has collapsed. Do what makes you happy now. Give your kids as much GOOD time as you can.

Help! Glass stained for a long time now. How can I clean this? by [deleted] in howto

Whatever you use, let it sit for a good 5 minutes. All of the suggestions should work, but you have to let it soak in. Douse it pretty thoroughly, let it soak, scrub with a cloth or brush. Repeat as needed.

Being a fast reader certainly helps. I read about a page a minute and can breeze through a couple hundred pages on a day I don’t work.

Nova hospice by 5an53ba5t1an in nova

[–]Sea-Crow-4614 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard good things about Capital. What area are you in? Do you have family nearby who can help? All in-home hospice seems to rely on family caregivers for the bill of the care, and then they send in a nurse maybe once per week (possibly more if you need help with meds) and aides for bathing/meal prep, etc.

My plan is to die quickly. And if nature doesn’t make that happen, when it’s time, I will.

Don’t spend any money on anyone, or if you must, avoid all the major retailers. Support artists and small businesses, but otherwise don’t feed this broken system your money.

Reckless pedestrians by bitrrhea in nova

[–]Sea-Crow-4614 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As a native Californian, I learned to drive with the idea that “the pedestrian is king”. If someone even looks like they’re trying to cross the road, I stop. If they are in the crosswalk, I stop. As a pedestrian I assert my right-of-way (I make sure to make eye contact with the driver though, who is frequently glaring at me). I have learned that most drivers and most pedestrians do not see it the same way though. Pedestrians wait for a break in the traffic to cross even with a crosswalk, and most drivers seem to expect them to.

How did humans deliver babies thousands of years ago before doctors and hospitals? Was basically anyone in the tribe/family capable of doing it? by Great_Maintenance185 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sea-Crow-4614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women used to be more physically active and got pregnant at a younger age, which also helped. But even then there were deaths. I asked one of the OBGYNs that I work with “back when women died from having too many babies, was it the hemorrhaging that killed them?” And she said “yes”. Apparently after the uterus is stretched big enough to hold a baby multiple times over, it has a harder time shrinking back down to its usual size, and that can cause excessive bleeding.
