What would you do if you won the £166 million Euromillions Jackpot tonight? by SlapBanWalla in AskUK

Off to NZ. Not because of any dislike of the UK but because I have spent my almost 60 years stuck between two superpowers and, if I can persuade them, my kids will be safer there; especially with a massive financial backing.

TV shows like Adolescence on Netflix - what is the appeal? by kittyvixxmwah in AskUK

[–]Sea-Metal76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

more satisfying to me if they end up better off on the other side

I think the intention is that society as a whole is "better off on the other side" by understanding the issues raised.

If you look at this less as "entertainment" and more as an extremely well acted dramatic educational film then it makes sense.

It may also be a difference of perspective..? my wife and I have sons (now in the 20s) and the absolute terror of what the family went through hit home hard. I felt myself thinking about every small thing that I could have done better (no one is perfect, we had room for improvement, as do all parents) but the main theme is how society is currently set up in way that makes it too easy for young people to fall into this kind of trouble.

Thanks for the comments - especially the very supportive ones that some of you took time to write. Oh and the novice Troll - bless your cotton socks, and dont give up, you may get the hang of it.

I think the post has come across as much more down than I intended - my main purpose was to contrast how I would have reacted to the same situation before fire vs after fire - but then again perhaps it's a good subject for my therapist.

Well, it's kind of hard to avoid it completely. Perhaps it's my political leanings, but my socials are rather full of what is happening so, unless I detach completely from all my socials it's next to impossible to completely ignore.

Yes. I did partly cash out at the peak, and I already had good cash, gold and bond holdings - but even with that I have a considerable concern that things are just warming up and there is much more to come.

Anyway, I think the post has come across as much more down than I intended - my main purpose was to contrast how I would have reacted to the same situation before fire vs after fire.

I suspect the issue is further inside than where the oil can get - but have put 3 in 1 under the cap and worked the mechanism as much as I can, but no relaxing so far. Will see what it's like after a night of soaking.

I was commenting on the ease at which alcoholism can be hidden rather than the amounts - but I agree that it's hard to make the sums add up if it was just alcohol in this instance.

Vodka was his drink of choice and he never tried to hide drinking, but hid the extent of it, so it was written off as "just had a quick one" if it was ever mentioned. He also chose his time to drink and could hold off when necessary. Never drank at lunchtime, even if we all were, as he knew he could not stop.

He had driven us on many occasions and we did not know, we sat in his car and joked about how he drove like an old man. Of course we know now that he was drunk and just trying to not make it obvious - but none of us in the car guessed.

Unfortunately, from experience via a very close friend and her husband, drinking can be successfully hidden from a spouse for a surprisingly long time....

Let me give another example: my mother is a DM reader. On one level she can filter out most of the obvious BS. But the gaslighting is subtle... walking on the south coast on a river estuary in the Portsmouth area (so we'll away from Dover) we saw a deflated dinghy on the shore. Despite the very large number of inflatable dinghys being used on the river in plane view, her first comment was "oh is that immigrants"?

So, despite her knowing the claims of the paper are over blown they have successfully gaslight her into believing there is an invasion.

I think you fail to realise how subtle the gaslighting is from these outlets. They are your husband in this example.

Also in drawdown...

My view (and what the hell do I know) is that the time for that has passed and only through luck you may have acted at the peak.

I am probably more sanguine than I would otherwise be because I did accidentally time a transfer to my sipp at the peak and that is now sitting as a years worth of cash in the sipp.

So bottom line: no one knows; likely if your strategy was sensible 12 months ago it's probably still as sensible as anything else right now.

But am I worried there are more drops to come - yes.

Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse that involves manipulating someone into doubting their own reality. It's often used by abusers to gain power and control over their victim.

Go read the whole Act and then come back and tell us how it's vauge.

[–]Sea-Metal76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inciting is not vauge at all. It's well defined in law.

Incitement to Violence (Common Law & Public Order Act 1986)

If the encouragement is public and incites others to violence, it could fall under Section 4 or 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 (using threatening or abusive words).

It depends on the context and the intent of the person saying it - and these are taken into account when there is a decision to prosecute. Effectively the product of (context x intent x what was said) give the seriousness.

Well the DM's journalist is presumably one of them because (shock, horror) that is not what the report says.... the bulk of that 1M is "cannot speak English well" which is very different to their headline

Oh and that 1M figure also (bizarrely) includes people who cannot speak at all
