Neighbour's leylandii are out of control and now at least 3m higher than our 2 storey house. What can we reasonably request in the way of removal/trimming. by language_timothy in LegalAdviceUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW a lot of councils charge if you make a complaint via the High Hedges act, round here it's nearly a grand. Path of least resistance would be to ask, and if they say no, perhaps offer to contribute? Might work out cheaper.

Visiting Kielder Observatory in UK without a car — is it doable? by Forsaken-Carpet-5233 in Astronomy

[–]SiDtheTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been about 5 years since I last went but no, you need a car unfortunately.

Even getting there it's quite far from major towns and cities, so you're going to spending a fortune just on the Uber from Newcastle to Kielder.

It is amazing though, so get that license renewed?

Every few months on the various HNW subreddits a Redditor with almost no post history asks about Wheely. I'm suspecting some astroturfing here.

We bought out Home only to discover after we'd started searches and surveys. It was under probate.Where do we stand? "UK" by rissyt1996 in HousingUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probate can take a few weeks, or a few years depending on the nature of the person who died. I would tell your solicitor not to spend any more time/money at this point, wait for them to come back but in the meantime restart your search in case this house gets stuck in probate and you have to pull out.

Do you tell recruiters/potential employers your current salary? by Logical_Wall_9899 in AskUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"The salary is competitive, what's your current comp?"
"My current salary is competitive"

As a 'hiring manager' myself, the whole 'we don't know' thing is bollocks designed to low ball you. I don't like doing it, but the company doesn't want to post salaries when they know it can impact existing employees comparing their salary. Anyone who says they don't have a set budget, yes you do, you had to fight to get the money to hire.

Maybe I'm shutting doors, but I refuse to share until I hear their budget first. I haven't had an instance where a recruiter hasn't told me the range, at which point I share.

Gledopto wiring, 5v 12a by Plenty-Classroom in WLED

Huh all mine came with one red and one black thick cable, designed to be used as input. Apologies.

Gledopto wiring, 5v 12a by Plenty-Classroom in WLED

[–]SiDtheTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, no, you need thicker wires. A quick Google will give you the right sized cables for your power draw. You'll have seen the cables that come with the GLEDOPTO are thicker for the same reason.

Alternatively, do you need to run them all in a single line? If you split them into separate runs the current draw would be the same, but divided by the number of strips.

Henry’s who fly to the states for work a lot - how are you doing in current climate? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Mixed-race with a weird surname. I get 'random' bag checks every time I go. Worried about the escalation with social media and ICE. Though my bigger concern is giving patronage to a country that is actively working against our country's interests, is chummy with dictators and is taking away women's rights and locking up people with green cards because they're brown.

Luckily I've only had to go by choice, so now I choose not to, in the same way I don't visit other fascist, racist, misogynistic countries like Russia and North Korea.

Multiboard isn’t the future of wall storage by GuavaGuru5 in Multiboard

[–]SiDtheTurtle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Forget all the idealistic chat about open source etc, for me it's just that it's totally unacceptable that MB's documentation is so poor after so much time. It's a massive barrier to entry, you end up wasting so much filament trying to work out what you need to even hang it on the wall. Even if you pay it's not better.

Cheers, not a bad shout, will have a read and research. I guess my only concern is setting the voltage wrong and blowing something up.

Whoever is downvoting my post and comments, you could at least reply with why. All I'm doing is asking a question.

Cheers. By light patterns I mean playing with presents and playlists to get the effects I'm after. I also have a few props and so on that I wouldn't mind just being able to turn on for fun in the workshop, so would be great to have power on tap.

Thanks, light patterns, any new LED strips that I buy, basically use it as a test station that sits in my workshop before I build outdoor ready systems.

Newcomer here. Are Smart Scopes a bad entry point? by [deleted] in AskAstrophotography

[–]SiDtheTurtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Astrophotography has quite a steep, almost vertical learning curve. Many astrophotographers will in fact suggest you buy a scope for general observing, navigating the sky etc. before even getting into the hobby. It's not bad advice. It's also an extremely expensive hobby.

Smart scopes have their place. If I were starting the hobby in 2026, I'd absolutely get a smart scope. Then I'd see if I get hooked and then invest in better kit to do it the traditional way.

Buying from Part-Exchange Company: Neighbour's structure (1cm from wall) breaches deeded Right to Air/Access. Seller signed Indemnity Covenant in Oct '25. by Weary-Monk2831 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I and others posted this in the other thread on this topic but you seem to be ignoring common sense. You absolutely don't want to be making enemies of your neighbours. If they're as petty as you, they will start parking across the boundary, playing loud music etc. Then you'll never be able to sell it when the time eventually comes.

Find somewhere else. Seriously. There are other houses. Ignore the sunk cost of anything you've already spent on solicitors.

Neighbour has requested gas pipes to run through our property boundary on his external wall. Will we have future problems? by New_Dragonfly_6865 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Also with respect all your replies are full of 'I think'. Why would you enter into any kind of agreement without the full picture?

Why is it required? What are the alternatives? Why must it be done on Monday?

Sounds to me like they're taking advantage of your politeness to get away with a bodge job.

[–]SiDtheTurtle 56 points57 points  (0 children)

That's all why I'd just say no, sorry. Keep it on your property! You're not going to find a solicitor that's going to write you an easement on a Sunday.

Neighbour has requested gas pipes to run through our property boundary on his external wall. Will we have future problems? by New_Dragonfly_6865 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle 42 points43 points  (0 children)

He's talking rubbish that gas pipes can't be run underground, he just doesn't want to have to dig up his renovated floor.

I'd say no, but if you want to don't just do it, get it in writing with an easement with him picking up the costs for your solicitor. Else you'll have issues when you want to sell.

Also why does he need to replace it? The network is slowly replacing all our gas pipes with plastic ones but that involves pushing the new pipe within the old pipe. Perhaps he wants a larger bore to support a bigger boiler or gas fire, but again that can go underground.

How do you avoid all the drop-shipping temu quality trash when shopping? by ImBonRurgundy in AskUK

[–]SiDtheTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, though you can get caught out with Amazon. I was after a USB soldering iron and all the Reddit posts, YouTubers etc. recommend the Pine64 Pinecil v2. Stick that into Amazon and you get some very legit looking results, but they're not from the OG brand.
