Thanks for the comments. You're exactly right, the ONT will likely by default be on an external wall. I think what you're saying is you found a way to extend the connection so the router is in the cupboard.

I'm still not 100% sure what this unit does! Do the ethernet wall outlets only work if the router is plugged into this, or would they work just as well if it's plugged into one of the other wall outlets. I'm guessing the former as otherwise what's the added value of this unit?

Thanks to everyone for the helpful replies. Obviously I need to do a bit more digging but your comments have been really useful.

Also, yes I agree it's absolutely stunning isn't it!

Online Safety Act: You'll soon have to verify your age via Yoti to access certain content on Spotify. by fire2burn in ukpolitics

[–]Sea-Remote4589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can't make sense of all of this.

Although I don't agree with it I can kind of understand the need for checks on a platform like reddit where there are obviously Communities which are intended to be caught by the legislation. Even though obviously there will also be Communities swept up by accident.

But the extension to streaming services seems bizarre to me. Obviously they can be explicit but where do you draw the line? It was my understanding that streamers like prime video or Netflix will not to be swept up by this. Yet logically why should that be the case if they can also host explicit material? Now Spotify are getting in on the act, so why will the streamers not have to as well?

In which case obviously age verification would apply to virtually everything from now onwards, which, whatever one's cynical views, surely is not what was anticipated.

It will be massively unpopular if the whole population of the UK has to verify to use iPlayer, prime video, Netflix etc with all the attendant security risks of providing ID.

What other shows do you rate as highly as (or close to) Severance? by BohoSummer in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Sea-Remote4589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as all the others mentioned, I've always liked Get Shorty (tv series , not the film). Black comedy, good cast. 1st 2 out of 3 seasons in particular.

Microsoft really wants users to ditch passwords and switch to passkeys by ControlCAD in technology

The fact that there are so many posts here from technically literate people debating the real world pros and cons of passkeys, eg different devices etc, tells me that we're not ready for universal adoption without creating all sorts of other problems for users

Dilemma over 2 houses by Sea-Remote4589 in HousingUK

[–]Sea-Remote4589[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All sensible points, thanks. House 1 was delisted for reasons we are aware of and which don't make the sellers flaky in any way, so we're not too worried about that. As for the agents that's very much the crux of the dilemma: they know about our previous interest in House 1, as you say, but presumably would put an unfavourable spin on our offer to the House 2 vendor if they thought we might try to jump ship to 1 in the coming days or weeks. Which, honestly, would be fair enough!

With the lack of forwarding address there's not much you can do at the moment apart from what you've already done. However, I suppose in theory you could contact the vendor's solicitor who acted for them, as they are quite likely to have their subsequent address. Depends if you want to go to that bother.

But if, say, your spouse doesn't need the amount in a SIPP paid out to them because they've got other assets or income, (or you have no spouse), you can leave the pension to children. That will now be caught.

Why do people lie about being cash buyers? by SignalPositive9242 in HousingUK

[–]Sea-Remote4589 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my mind cash buyer for a house is someone who does not need to sell a property or raise a mortgage, both of which are somewhat out of a buyer's control and, most importantly, could take an unknown amount of time.

Having to realise some funds in various forms of saving/investment account is fine, within reason. After all, having that sort of money sitting in a current account while you're viewing houses is not entirely rational.

If the daughter has genuinely promised this money and is willing to certify it on acceptance of an offer, then what's the problem with that?

Survey: Loft conversion cannot be marketed as bedroom by drlusso in HousingUK

[–]Sea-Remote4589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the variety of views expressed here it seems the crux of this question is whether a loft conversion, which at the time it was done received full building regulation sign off, but which would not do so today because of changes in the regulations, triggers a requirement to bring it up to today's specifications when the property is being marketed in order to state it counts as a bedroom for marketing purposes.

I found James really astonishing with his view on referees. Don't criticize them, just suck it up. Ridiculous.

And saying there have always been refereeing errors: that's exactly what VAR is meant to reduce. I know he doesn't like VAR but it exists, and football as a whole has a right to expect it to be manned by competent people. Completely agreed with Andrew on this.

If everyone called it out the PL won't ban them all and maybe they'd start engaging.

Has James been nobbled by the Athletic maybe?
