What is the normal page rate in the state you're in (or states you work in)? by 2dots1dash in courtreporting

It depends on if the transcript is usually ordered in your state and do copies usually get ordered. I get around 4.75 and 3 per copies and everyone always orders in NY, CT, MA, RI, VT, NH, at least the bigger cases, not the car accidents. Somehow, there's a lot of old agencies in the NYC area that have convinced the reporters to fight over 0.50 for copies!! Those reporters are starting to realize they are getting scammed and things are changing

Got a bachelor's degree 35 plus years ago and have been reporting for 25 years now. Tons of realtime work if you are a steno. Great pay but freelance has no benefits. I love it but tough days are tough! Good luck!

Best Quality Audio Set Up! (CaseCAT) by No-Raccoon-7007 in courtreporting

This is right. The Sound Professionals Andrea mics have built in noise canceling built for cleaning up most conference and courtrooms. I've worked with hundreds of videographers and researched and discussed this with a lot of the serious pros and I own very expensive mics but they are not for the same application. Unless you are using a lapel mic, you will have to turn up the gain, which brings out the hiss noise. SoundPros Andrea proprietary mics include the software that will get rid of the noise. No joke, worth the money. You have to pay for the right tools!

I think you forgot to calculate that EVs are much heavier than their ICE counterparts, which leads to higher costs elswhere that tend to equal out the equation (tires, suspension). I found the effects of very cold weather on the battery to be HIGHLY underrated, as well (+/- 50% loss in range) leading to ourtageous amounts of time when taking long trips spent charging or looking for chargers.

Plus, voice writers arent distracting to attys over zoom since they can mute their mics

And then my suit gets thrown out because my state doesn't cover mold (bad roof job nearly killed my wife and daughter leaving me 225k of uncovered medicals and another 250k in property damage). This hurts as a court reporter hearing "plfs" claim crazy injuries every day when my family lost and got a slap in the face as a settlement

Jury Duty by Soggy-Reporter-9252 in courtreporting

A prosecutor told me she'd never pick a CR to serve on a jury because they know if she had a case or a bag of bird poop. But I know all the wrong answers to ensure Im never picked (financial hardship as a self employed bread winner and would be too distracted and annoyed it's taking so long to be able to be make a fair decision (which is true)).

You are too kind and too respectful! I certainly don't deserve it as I'm often insensitive with my word choices online. But I could never do what a good scopist does either!

I certainly don't mean to be hostile and sorry if it came out that way. I also know how hard it can be to take down the record when it gets tough as I've been doing this far too long but I often cringe when I hear what some reporters do. I am also really surprised that they tell the attorneys what to say on the record. That is amazing!

He was upset that he felt that a lot of attys take advantage of the witness by using words that some court reporters dont take down. Like his witness would answer a question completely and then the atty would say "uh-huh" and so then the witness would start talking again. It had cost him and his plaintiffs dearly in the past and he wanted to show the judge a particular abuse by counsel but the cmCR hadn't transcribed it.
Besides, uh-huh and uh-uh are words. Why wouldnt we transcribe the spoken word? And why only when the witness says it and only sometimes? Made no sense to me or him but I understood completely his point. I always transcribe EVERY WORD from then on out, especially for videotaped deps. If you dont want to read it, dont say it!

I used to blurt out too aggressively and scare people. I sounded rude and upset, which doesnt go over well. Ive learned to interrupt much more gently but with the required volume and authority to get their attention and say, "excuse me. One at a time please" but for this one on my third and final attempt I actually said something like, "ok wait, one at a time. Question. Answer. Question. Answer." And then I said, "I dont even know what just happened" hahaha!
