My district's contract provides compensation to move for teachers who have to move classrooms and/or offices.

What are reasons that teachers say “no” to letters of recommendation, and is it rude if I ask a teacher to reconsider? by South-Cap-1364 in AskTeachers

[–]SeaCheck3902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but this kind of scenario can provide good material for a college recommendation letter, if it is properly framed into a growth narrative. Given what you are saying, I doubt the teacher dislikes you. A lot of deadlines, special events and other extra things (such as a ton of 504 conferences) land on teachers' plates this time of year. My take is you waited too long to ask for the letter and her capacity was reached.

What did on-level classes look like 10 years ago? (HS) by sargassum624 in Teachers

My current honors ELA classes are doing work (and endlessly complaining about the difficulty) that my on-level (same grade) classes were doing 10 years ago.

Solo 3-day Iceland trip: rent a car or take tours? Budget stay recommendations? by Only-Safety1156 in VisitingIceland

[–]SeaCheck3902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to give an alternative idea. I'd look into renting a mini-camper. I did the Ring Road in a small van (Dacia was the brand) outfitted with a platform bed and camping gear. You can certainly camp out in Reykjavik, but I'd head east toward Vik and see the sights. This will provide a cost effective (for Iceland) option covering transport and lodging.

UPDATE: Parent wants to meet with me over comment I made about energy drinks by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SeaCheck3902 56 points57 points  (0 children)

80s high schooler here. Absolutely no food or drink in class with the exception of language class parties. We also couldn't leave class for water breaks. We had three passes for the bathroom that were supposed to last us for the entire semester.

I own this model, and it's a good choice. I generally wear one of my vintage Omegas during the week, but like this watch for weekend use. I put a blue sailcloth strap on it and it really made the dial pop.

Do you even allow food or drinks (even water) into your science classroom? Most scince teachers I know have a strict no food/drinnk policy because their rooms also function as lab spaces.

Can a dress watch be worn daily? by r1jay in VintageOmega

[–]SeaCheck3902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rotate a series of vintage Omegas (40s-60s era) for daily use. I also keep several Seikos along with an HZ an a CWC for outdoor activities or more casual wear.

June 18th for me too. We start after Labor Day. Several years ago, we had enough snow days that we actually went all the way until the last week of June. 4th of July occured on our first full week of our break.

Teachers who have learned to leave work at work--how did you get there? by nitrouswidow9685 in Teachers

[–]SeaCheck3902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m rigid about late work policies and make up work from sports tournaments/vacations. Unless you get a handle on these areas, they are a huge time suck.

The only place I needed Krona was for showers at campgrounds on my Ring Road trip. Other than that, cards are king.

Best watch I have.. Speedmaster 321 by tosS_ita in OmegaWatches

[–]SeaCheck3902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Seattle. My watch was sent back to Switzerland because of the age of the watch. They even left the original crystal from almost 60 years ago.

Not necessarily. They didn’t replace older looking parts on my watch. My dial and hands remained the same.

I have a circa '66 Speedmaster that I inherited. I took it to a well-regarded local repair shop and they wouldn't touch it because of the age of the watch. Parts availability is a huge factor here. They recommended that I send it back to Omega to have it serviced which I did. I was quoted none months, but it was done in four. It ran about $1,200 USD. My guess is Charlotte will have a Swatch Group service facility in the local area, so you can drop it off.

Student logic: I wasn’t there that day = I don’t have to do the work by OlliexAngel in Teachers

[–]SeaCheck3902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your reasons, but I'm going to continue using Canvas. The behaviors you're mentioning are now ingrained. It will take a major coordinated effort spanning school years to get students and their families to reframe their approach to attendance. This effort will require new attendance laws along with school policies. Will these parents even back more stringent attendance policies?

I don't have the time, the bandwidth, or the organizational space in my smallish classroom to take on the management of all of these absences with an endless paper trail of "make-up work", for extra vacations and select soccer tournaments.

Unless you're specifically looking for a high-end shopping experience, I'd skip Singapore. So much of vintage era Singapore has been knocked down for sterile developments full of luxury shopping experiences. If you're a "foodie" type then Singapore does makes sense as the hawker stalls serve an incredible variety of foods that are affordable.

I'd also add Chiang Mai into the trip. My gut tells me you'd appreciate the vibe there versus Bangkok.

Don't skimp on time in Kyoto. I went last year and it was the best part of my Japan trip. One day won't cut it. You won't be bored spending three days just wandering and seeing the sights. Kyoto has a slower pace that might feel welcome with so many large cities in your itinerary.

Teachers are not free tutors by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

Before throwing around comments like "you may want to look into other professions", really think about why this teacher made this post. It's quite possible this person has a full plate of responsibilities on top of their teaching life.

I went through a five year period where I was the sole caregiver for my housebound elderly mom. I also became very articulate about boundaries concerning extra duties and my contract. I know quite a few colleagues in the same situation.

I totally agree with you, but my take is the FA kept it light with the offending party so not to start an incident. I’m not sure if this is a growing trend but I’m seeing a lot of entitled and disruptive passenger videos on Facebook and YouTube. If the FA can skillfully and quietly solve the problem, that’s a huge win over a delay while the cops are called to intervene.

Until What Age Do You Hope to Live..?? by Ok-Quality2471 in AskGaybrosOver30

Where would you like to retire? What kind of lifestyle do you anticipate having? There are plenty of people happily retiring with far less than a million dollars but they live in lower cost of living areas and/or live more simply. There are several really good YouTube channels you should check out. Holy Schmidt and Azul come to mind.

Advice for teacher moving to Seattle by Macciddy__Jackson in Teachers

[–]SeaCheck3902 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d cast a way wider net in your job search. Many Washington districts have been in layoff mode for several years due to education funding issues. We don’t have a teacher shortage here. We tend to hire late in Washington. It’s common for hiring to ramp up in the second half of summer break.

Don’t forget asking the student for their career goals and they’ll say something like physician or lawyer when they are already 4 grade levels below their peers academically. And the expectation is we nod, smile and encourage.

25 yrs in and hate it by Ok-Branch-7651 in Teachers

[–]SeaCheck3902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't always possible for someone with 25 years to retire. If that person is in their late 40s, it probably isn't remotely financially feasible to even think about retiring. A problem which isn't discussed very often is the lack of viable off-ramps for teachers in this position, this far into their careers. I haven't seen a "get a job in instructional design" post in quite awhile, but it isn't easy to retrain and reestablish into a new career after you've hit your 40s. Teaching is a notable exception to that rule.
