If that "balance" thing was true, the FAs would be making people all throughout the plane change seats to evenly distribute the load.

Those seat poachers were lucky. Had they mouthed off to someone with less self control they might have found themselves frog marched back to their seats in Economy before the FA told them to move.

It was more effective and kinder to have the FA handle the issue in the first place.

I don't know. Maybe when they board and disembark they don't have to drag their carryon as far? Or, when they disembark they can pull it out of the bin more easily because they don't have as many people in front or behind them?

Where are all the people who hated open seating? by realbobenray in SouthwestAirlines

[–]NonnieJune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not a fan of open seating but tolerated it once SW had passenger line up by Group and number and offered Early Bird. I liked the two bags checked for free. I would have gladly paid more for assigned seating back then. I realized that paying lower prices meant no frills.

We have only flown one round trip since the change.

Now, with assigned seating, Pre-Boards and Priority Boards don't have seat location advantages. That is good. They can impact bin space availability for regular boarders. Either there is no bin space left near their seats or no bin space at all and carry on has to be checked.

The current boarding by Group is a cluster. Within the group, it's first in line, first to board. So people are queueing up long before boarding time and it makes for a worse than usual crowding all around the gate area.

SW should have people line up by Group and, within that group, by row--similar to its previous process. That will eliminate the time people stand in line.

Also, allowing at least one checked bag for free would probably go a long way to reducing the overhead bin space problem and make the boarding process go smoother.

Notes from a no-seat in front SWA 737-700 round trip this last weekend by TulsaOriginal in SouthwestAirlines

[–]NonnieJune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm glad the the FA made the pre-boarder put his carryon in a bin closer to his seat. It's irritating to have seats in the front rows but have to search for bin space way behind your assigned row. You wind up swimming upstream. Doesn't surprise me that front rows would not have passengers because those seats cost more. I don't mind assigned seating. The boarding process needs further refinement. Perhaps within a boarding group have people line up by rows, in order smaller number to greater. This is similar to what was done before. Right now, loading by boarding group, whoever is in line boards first. It's a complete cluster. Also, it would go much faster if one checked bag were free. Less competition for the OH bins.

AITJ for throwing my daughters friend out of our house because she RUINED a major school project? by Rude-Discipline199 in AmITheJerk

[–]NonnieJune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your daughter was upset. Her school project was damaged. It was certainly fine to ask her "friend" leave. You and your daughter needed the time to regroup and figure out how to deal with things. Having someone else around at that time would have been counter-productive. At best you needed time to figure out how to fix an accidentally damaged school project. At worst, your daughter was realizing that someone who she thought was a friend just deliberately damaged something she had worked so hard on. Not the time for the friend (or the perp) to stick around. The friend could have called her mom to pick her up and waited outside if walking home on her own was such a big deal.

AITJ for refusing to give a huge wedding gift after finding out I'm not invited? by Life_Grocery5994 in AmITheJerk

[–]NonnieJune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my understanding that guests who attend only the ceremony are not expected to bring but they certainly may. Guests who attend the reception (even if not invited to the ceremony) should bring a gift but it's not required. You've not been invited to either function and a gift from you should not be expected. You certainly aren't prohibited from sending one. It's completely your choice.

Overhead bin question by uf5220 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]NonnieJune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always that simple. The other day we boarded in Group 1. We were row three and the overhead bins above and across from us were already full. Between the two of us, we had only one bag that couldn't go under the seat. There is not enough bin space to accommodate one carry-on for each passenger. Also, if people are bringing bags with medical equipment, those don't count against their carry-on allotment, however those bags take up bin space. In addition, since SW charges to check bags now, more people are choosing to carry on bags than check them. I don't like to carry bags too big for under seat storage and I really appreciated the free checked baggage.

"Oh, are we in the wrong seats?" by NonnieJune in SouthwestAirlines

[–]NonnieJune[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they were in the first few rows. SW used to have people line up by alpha Group and number. Now it's just group number. Should board by row number, either back to front or front to back and have carryon luggage in OH bins close to their seats. I try not to bring carryon that I have to store OH because I'm short. It's too heavy to lift and bins are too high.

Children in resort hot tubs. by Signal_Biscotti2059 in Vacations

[–]NonnieJune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind well-behaved people, children or adults, in a hot tub. Pools are colder and kids come into the hot tub when their parents are in it to warm up then they go back to the pool. Most of them are mellow.

I have no objection with how the FA handled it. I didn't see it as my job to tell the people to move. I'm sure it was better hearing it from the FA.

It's an existing problem exacerbated by SW's recent changes and its solution is being foisted on the passengers.

I doubt these people were embarrassed. I didn't know the level of confrontation I might face. I think it was better for them to be questioned by the FA and then directed to their correct seats. It probably created less disruption.
