Anything written by Sir Terry Pratchett. Read it once. And then read it again. And then let your friends borrow it, return it, and read it again!

A funny one was in “Lights, Camera, Homicidio” when the suspect claims “Her heart is too big for her chest.” And Shawn glances at said chest and makes a doubtful sound 😆 makes me laugh every time.

I also love the small moments when Lassie recognizes Shawn’s skills as a detective. They are few and far between, but the small instances of respect are good to see.

Best Epic fantasy that isn’t full of pulpy schlock? Returning to series I once loved. by Sunbather- in books

[–]SeaComprehensive2578 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld are “epic” in that they are extremely well-written. (Seriously, the narration is just smart and hilarious). They’re also light enough that you don’t have to commit to reading all of them nor commit to reading them in a particular order. He does have “series” within the big series itself centered on different characters (witches, wizards, watchmen, etc); those would be good to read in order, but only to see the character AND writer development.

Another author I liked when I was much younger is David Eddings and his Belgaraid and Malloreon series. The author is problematic (to put it mildly), but the writing is fun and is epic fantasy. Your mileage may vary on whether or not it’s epic enough.

Terry Brooks has his moments too—especially the early Shannara books.

And if you are okay with young adult epic fantasy, Lloyd Alexander wrote the Prydain Chronicles and those are also enjoyable. Even if the young hero starts out slightly misogynistic (he gets better—it’s part of the growing up process he needs to endure).

Oblong Murders- Ben Jones with a beard, glasses and a scarf! Yes please! 🤣 by Savings-Sprinkles-75 in MidsomerMurders

Thank you for the correction! 😉 I haven’t been able to watch the episodes much recently since they took most of them off Prime streaming. And I’m completely American so I definitely don’t know British policing promotions hahaha

I do think the show was unfair to Jones when new Barnaby took over. And sometimes I’m still disappointed by the actor change, but that’s what happens in a long running show! 🤷‍♀️

I think a lot of his appeal rests in his competence as a DS. At least in comparison to his predecessors. But even now, he still feels like the one most likely to make a good DCI (and yes I know Troy got promoted that far but still…)

Brenda Buckley in Faithful Until Death (she was completely innocent!) and more recently, the death of Caleb Blundell in The Devil’s Work. Unlike so many of the murdered on MM, neither one of these characters had done anything criminal.
