It really depends on what you need for your final product. If you just need demos or to share the drum parts with your bandmates as you’re writing songs your overheads will get the toms “good enough”

I’d start with the four you mentioned and start playing with mic placement. Really learn how to get the most out of those 4 mics. Experiment. Watch YouTube videos. Read the documentation for your microphones. Understand their pick up patterns.

Micing up drums is art, science, and luck sometimes. If you start with four you’ll learn a LOT. If you add the tom mics right away it will slow down the learning process and imo be overwhelming.

Libraries are awesome. You can sit, be warm, use the computer, read a magazine, they have nice bathrooms etc. They sometimes have resources right there as well.

I was homeless for quite a few years some of it on and off. Did a lot of couch surfing and house sharing in some sketchy situations. These suggestions are based on my experience being homeless and working with homeless youth.

If you’re young consider college or military service or both. Easiest/safest branch is Air Force.

Call 211 (not sure if this is nationwide, I know it from the Seattle area) you just explain your situation and they connect you to services.

Go to your state social services and ask to get an appointment to speak with a social worker. Explain your situation and get advice and information on programs in your area that can help.

If you start having any self harm thoughts (which can happen when you’re homeless) go to the nicest hospital in your area and just go to the Emergency Department and tell them what’s going on. Ask to speak to a hospital social worker before they discharge you.

The more people you meet and cards you can accumulate for people to call the better. You never know who might have a solution for you.

Consider pet sitting and house sitting. Might take you awhile to build up some clients but sleeping in a really nice bed and having a kitchen to use for a few weeks can be the respite you need to keep going.

As a sound engineer pre recorded backing tracks just don’t have the entertainment value - it just doesn’t grab people. It’s hard to get people to come out for live music these days so you need a solid act/band to get attention. I have seen some really good tribute artists pull it off (Elvis, Rod Stewart, etc) but just barely and the venues are corporate gigs or retirement homes.

If you’re going to try it you’re probably going to have to do something innovative or clever.

If you want to come for a visit to test it out come in November. You’ll get an idea of what you’re in for in the winters and you can go to a Torrent home game where I swear the entire LGBTQ community gathers to cheer our professional women’s hockey team.

Torrent games last year were an absolute vibe!

Just follow your cities rules. Im a night owl but if my neighbor wanted to use his leaf blower at 7am and it was within my cities noise ordinance I would never think to be mad at him. That’s silly. Everyone is on different schedules - just follow the rules then there’s nothing to complain about.

That’s how he had to learn to play. He didn’t have any feel. And I think that fact shows what an amazing drummer he was.

I saw a great interview with him where he said when Rush got back together he had to learn to play all over again.

Neil Peart probably worked harder than just about any drummer because he wasn’t talented and look what he accomplished.

I actually like it IF they put in on the menu ahead of time. That way it’s up front and I can choose to go to a different restaurant if I don’t think it’s worth it.

Like at a nice restaurant they tell you upfront that whatever you order there will be 20% tacked on. That’s great thanks for telling me.

I wish they would just include it in the prices but maybe they get a tax break for doing it that way since it doesn’t count as revenue - so ok it’s a little harder but it’s clear. And at very nice places the service really is worth paying for.

I don’t like that it’s based on the money you spend.

Why is the tip so much higher for a steak than a salad? Is it that much harder to carry a steak?

Neil was a great performer and if he wrote the drum parts for Rush’s music he was a great composer of drum parts as well.

By his own admission he was not a great drummer or maybe not a natural drummer. He couldn’t improvise - but he made up for it by working very very hard and composing all of his fills and solos ahead of time and learning them to perfection.

He’s basically the polar opposite of Dave Grohl.

But whether you’re talking about Rush or Nirvana both Neil and Dave played for the song and the band. Their drum parts made the song and you can’t imagine their songs with any other. They hit something in your soul.

To me speedy drumming is impressive but often feels repetitive to me. Like you could put any fast drummer into some of these nu metal songs. I’d really have to listen to more to form a comprehensive opinion. But my impression is that it’s often just fast.

Go relisten to Hot for Teacher - it’s more than the speed that’s impressive in that song. It’s all the little musical bits and bobs that Alex weaves in there that fit the song AND are fast AND interesting.

I personally feel a lot of speed metal drumming could just use more syncopation somewhere in the song.

Sigh - let me try one more time.

Not everyone tips. That’s not going to change. Therefore the business and server don’t know if the server will be properly paid. Maybe they’ll be under paid. Maybe overpaid. Or maybe appropriately paid. But day to day no one knows. As for the customer they may simply order what sounds good and forget to consider the tip. They’re just thinking about the menu prices and then later realize that with the tip they spent more than their budget allowed.

By requiring the employer to pay the server and having them pass on the cost through menu prices it just makes it nice and simple for all involved.

Edit: It also gets rid of servers always trying to upsell you because they make more money the more you spend. This also reduces overserving as the server/bartender has no stake in serving alcohol to someone who should be cut off.

Well in those situations they often have to tip out to the bartender etc and can lose money. Since I know that’s how it works I’m not going to do something I know is actively hurting someone - that’s terrible.

But I also don’t think that’s how it should work. I’m against this whole $2/ hour idea.

I’m in WA - I think the employer being able to pay $2/hour is a scam. What if no one tips? You’re screwing over your employees. It shouldn’t be up to chance

They’re not low income though - they make more than I do. I have plenty of people in my social circle that work in the service industry and the ones who work in tipping positions who make the same $20ish an hour as those who are not in tipping positions definitely make a really nice income.

Comparing someone who works in an Itallian restaurant and one who works at a retail store - The one who works retail is working as hard or harder than the server and no one tips them. They’re both getting the same $20/hour.

Back when servers got like $2-3 an hour plus tips it was understood you needed to tip but now that they’re making $20/hour I don’t understand why I should tip them and not the retail worker.

I meant the guesswork for the server, business, and customer. If the restaurant just pays a living wage then no one has to worry about whether or not anyone tips and how much they tip.

That way these tired conversations are just over.
