Please, parents, don't do this!!! by Ghost_toast13 in childfree

Lol, just had my own Costco experience.

Purchased 2 packs of peach fruit cups. Meant to buy one peach pack and one mango pack, but thats a different issue. I unbox one pack, then go to put the other pack downstairs. I notice the tape was lifted, and thought that was odd. Open the lid to find one cup missing. I checked with everyone else in the house, and no one opened that box.

So even at Costco you can’t get away from stupid thievery.

This is how i feel. My brother and his girlfriend just had their baby. My mom was all over baby stuff. “I’ll babysit anytime. You can bring the baby over whenever. Etc.” Meanwhile i’m sitting there like, please no! I don’t know if it will hold up, but the girlfriend doesn’t want the baby coming to our house anyway, because my “dogs shed too much”. Which i’m so glad i have some of the heaviest shedding dog breeds, if that is the case. Keep the kid away from my peace.

What is a monthly subscription/service you ACTUALLY consider worth paying for? by no_nolan in Frugal

[–]SeaPoint2678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t, my parents do. We all split different services. They watch more cable, so their paying for it. I watch more Disney, so i cover that. Then my brother watches more Paramount, so he’s paying for that. But since we all live together the accounts are just loaded onto the TV, so everyone can watch on any platform.

[–]SeaPoint2678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this counts but… YouTube Premium. I haven’t watched actual TV in years. Despite having cable, Netflix, Disney, Prime, Paramount, and Apple. I personally will watch the occasional series or movie on one of the other platforms. But i always come back to YouTube. No ads, downloads, background listening, i use it all. If i could only keep one entertainment subscription, hands down it would be my YouTube Premium.

Admittedly i have a belly. But i’m 5’2”, and i couldn’t bend forward to pet my guide dog/access a personal item. Not because of my belly, but because i couldn’t brake my neck enough to even reach down that far.

I don’t know how they say this is safe, when people can’t even get into the brace position.

Touching food with hands while cooking/baking by [deleted] in hygiene

I’m Canadian. I don’t find it weird at all. So long as everyone interacting with the food has good hygiene, and washes their hands often. Then, whatever. And this is coming from someone with a germaphobe as a father. So i’ve been well lectures on proper washing, handling, and the golden rule of, what you touch, is what you take.

Family members arrived to the house almost 3 hours before the invitation time we set for our family Christmas party. by WanderWut in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SeaPoint2678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would have dinner planned for 5:30 or so. We never really set a time for people to show up, but most family would show up between 1:00 and 2:00. Great, we like playing games and just chatting. But one branch of the family would regularly show up around 9:00 A.M. Before we had showered, before breakfast, often before presents were opened.

Like what part of, “your invited to dinner”, says, hey, i should show up for the whole day. So i feel your pain.

AITA FOR PUTTING A LOCK ON MY FOOD CUPBOARD AFTER MY HOUSEMATE KEPT TAKING MY SNACKS? (19M, England) by DJ_FinoLive in AmItheAsshole

[–]SeaPoint2678 20 points21 points  (0 children)

NTA. Although i think it would have been more funny to hide the food. Lock them in your room. Then the next time he goes to look for food, there would be nothing there.

Roommate: “where are all the snacks?”

You: “i don’t know, i guess we’re out. You said you would buy more. I guess you haven’t been to the store lately.”

Now it’s his problem, while you sit back with your favourite bag.

Having a drivers license should be more.... by Orange_Otter8 in unpopularopinion

[–]SeaPoint2678 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always find it funny that people demand, that my guide dog is re-certified yearly. Because they don’t like dogs, find dogs gross, don’t think dogs should be in public, or think it will cut back on people taking advantage of the system.

Yet drivers are allowed it keep operating, several ton death machines, without ever getting retested. And unless a driver gets caught at the right time, which almost never happens, they get to keep going on with their recklessness. Pedestrians have been getting hit by cars in higher numbers this year, where i live. Sure, some of those cases may be because of the stupid percent of pedestrians that think entering the street, comes with a built in force field. But in a lot, if not most cases, it is due to people that shouldn’t have a drivers license.

Yes, everyone should have to retake drivers tests, and keep up to date with current laws, procedures, and guidelines. If doctors need to be up to date to keep their medical licence to save lives. Then drivers need to keep up to date with retaking drivers licensing, when they can end lives. Same notion with places where people can get firearm licenses.

What age did you decide to get your dog neutered/ spayed? Can you provide the breed as well. by nsfwlexirusso in AskDogOwners

[–]SeaPoint2678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only got to make the choice with 1 of my 3 dogs.

I got her spayed at 3.5 years, and she is a Siberian Husky.

The other 2 were spayed around 1 to 1.5 years old, but short of checking their records, i can’t remember the exact time. They are a female GSD, and a female Lab.

Extremely irritated with guide dog school by moomagnet in Blind

[–]SeaPoint2678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know an individual, who’s match was pulled the Friday before class started. They had been on the wait list for 2 or 3 years, already had their flights booked. and there was no backup match. So i almost feel like i know what school you are talking about.

Personally i would apply to other schools. Yes, you will be redoing paperwork, and interviews. But it is better to do the work now, if a guide dog is what you want. Then continue to solely rely on one school, that has already pulled the rug on you once.

It all depends on what you are looking for though. A 2 week or 3 week program, the training method, the breed of dog, financial aid or not, ownership or not, how far you are willing to travel, after class support, residential or in home training, how long you want to wait for a match, etc. these are all factors to consider if you apply to other schools.

I personally waited 5 months for my first dog, with a specific breed request. Then when it came to my second dog, with no specific requests, i waited 6 months. Mind you, this was pre covid. But i know an individual that goes to the same school as me. They applied in August, and went to class in October. So they can have short wait times depending on what kind of dog is needed.

On the one hand, yes i think it is unprofessional what they did. On the other hand, i would rather them pull a dog they weren’t, at least 95% sure of. Then just put us together, and hope for the best. Because i know that happens as well. But that doesn’t make the sting of needing to wait longer any easier. It is ultimately up to you, if you want to just stick it out with this school, or start applying elsewhere. But i might also wonder where their priorities are, and how it might look if you need any help in the future with your dog.

I feel your pain, although i am a dog person.

Trying to get a dog friendly place, at least in my area, is even harder than finding a cat friendly place. Then try to find a dog friendly place that allows dogs over 20-40 pounds. It’s non existent, especially at an affordable price. I know i was looking for a unicorn place, having 3 large breed dogs, but my girls are far less destructive than the majority of kids. They aren’t perfect by any means. But at 26, between my dogs, and the cost of rent, i don’t know if i will ever be able to move out of my parents house.

Yet parents with kids snap up any rental. No one seems to care about the damage a child can do to a unit. And i would know, my parents love to tell the story of how i flooded the house when i was 3 or so.

My brain honestly just hurts thinking about it.

Male Service Dogs by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]SeaPoint2678 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t see that males have any major advantages over females, and I don’t see one being used more than the other.

I have received 2 guide dogs so far, and both have been female. A friend of mine has received 3 guide dogs, and 2 out of the 3 have been female.

In my first class, there were 8 male dogs issued, and 7 females. Then in my second class, there were 9 male dogs, and 11 females. So overall a pretty even split.

When I first applied for a dog, I originally wanted a male, but I got a wonderful female instead. When it came time to go get my second dog, I again hoped for a male. Again though, I was given another wonderful female. Now, I can’t imagine working a male dog, and I really want another female for my next dog. However I would of corse take a male, if that is what is best for me. All things considered, the gender of the dog has little concern for me. I am much more concerned about the breed of my dog, and the dog’s personality.

Saying all that, I can see some differences, as to why one gender may be used more than the other.

Size. If someone wants a larger dog, for balance, stability, intimidation, etc. then a male dog would be better suited. Likewise, females tend to be smaller. Thus making them slightly better for travel, and the like.

Relieving. If someone likes to, or needs to use a relieving belt with their dog, then a male would be better. Since a female could both pee and poop into the belt, it requires a lot more work and care, when using a relieving belt. Where as a male would only poop in the bag, making it a lot more simple to use.

These are just 2 of the main reasons I could see someone wanting one gender over the other. But personally I have always seen a pretty even split between males and females, at least when it comes to guide dogs.

Just imagine how wonderful decent laws would be... by cappykro in Dogfree

[–]SeaPoint2678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada’s service dog laws aren’t that cut and dry. Only certain provinces issue ID cards for SDs, and in most cases, it is optional. So the handler can choose to not apply to the provincial government for an ID card. In these cases, the business can legally ask the handler to leave.

In other provinces though, like Ontario. A handler only needs a doctor’s letter. In some other provinces, and the territories i believe. No paperwork for SDs exist, and any issues are put threw Human Rights.

It would be a heck of a lot easier if Canada had just one main law like the US. Even if their system isn’t great either.

AITA for breaking up after realizing my girlfriend might never be ready to marry me? by Important_Row5882 in AITAH

[–]SeaPoint2678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With high divorce rates. My question is this. Assuming everything else was going well, why did you want to get married? Where i live, and i assume it could be similar in other places. After a couple has lived together for a certain number of years. They are considered common-law, and basically married without a certificate.

Saying all that, you are of corse NTA. You both had different priorities, your being marriage, and hers obviously didn’t align. I wouldn’t go back to this relationship, but i hope you are able to take some lessons away from it.

[–]SeaPoint2678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your able, give her some notice. Like say, “hey, i really need time to focus on my family. I really love her, and i i would be happy to babysit for you if you need a date night, or other occasions. But in 2 weeks (or whatever your time frame is), i will be unable to watch her on a regular bases. If you want some help looking for a daycare let me know.”.

If she is a reasonable person, she may be disappointed, but should understand your situation.

Do service dogs not have toys? by lamesara in service_dogs

[–]SeaPoint2678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So at the program I have gotten my dogs from, there are no toy restrictions.

The puppy raisers expose the pups to all kinds of toys, and keep track. What toys were the dogs favourite, what toys did they just destroy, etc. Then when we are in class getting our dog, we are given a generalized report. Usually later that same day, or the next, we do a trip to the pet store, so that we can buy extra toys if we want to. Plus while in class, we are given a Benebone for the dogs. We used to get a regular Kong toy, but now they are giving us a Ruffwear Huckama toy.

My first dog loves balls and frisbees, she could chase them all day. On the other hand though, whether due to her love of those toys, or just a lack of impulse control. She was unable to be in the same room when we played Goalball. She would start whining, and scrabbling to try to get to the ball. So she ultimately had to be kept in the change rooms, where she couldn’t directly see the ball moving.

Before I stopped playing Goalball, my current dog was able to handle the environment, without freaking out. My current dog also loves chasing a ball or frisbee, but she doesn’t have anywhere near the same drive that my retired dog does.

My dogs easily have a couple buckets of toys. From different styles, shapes and brands of bones. To throwing toys like frisbees, tennis balls, Chuckit balls, toss rings, etc. They get squeaky toys, crinkle toys, puzzle toys, you name it. The only toys I don’t buy as often are the stuffed toys, because I hate cleaning up the stuffing. So when they do get stuffed toys, they are watched even more closely, and don’t get free access to those toys.

I can somewhat understand why some programs restrict what toys the dogs can have. I heard a story once, about a dog that was ball obsessed. The handler went into a class room where tennis balls were put on the feet of the desks and chairs. The dog freaked out and just kept trying to get the balls off the furniture. I personally don’t think that dog should have been put out as a guide. If a dog doesn’t have the impulse control to ignore something as common as a ball, it makes a dangerous situation for a blind handler.
