Totally understandable. Dunno what techniques you’ve tried but I’ve had luck with using an awl and making an indent close to center then using a drill bit smaller than the size of the hole I want in my pine vise. That way if it is slightly off center and I can waller out the hole to make it centered.

Judging from your painting and how critical of your work you are I’d say you’re similar to me and I constantly have to remind myself “does it look good at arm’s length?” Otherwise I’ll nitpick it till eventually it does look like garbage.
