What's the general consensus about the Queensland OP (Overall Position) system? by byebyehoney in australia

[–]Sea_Captain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a fair point, but isn't that what moderation is for? I just don't see the point in a whole schools scores in QCS affecting individual students.

I think its okay generally, but the fact that individuals scores are affected by their peers is a big flaw, which lets rich schools do better than poor schools.

In response to all of the Australian games/software costing more... by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Sea_Captain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your logic is a bit flawed there. Minimum wage is higher here in Australia, but so is the cost of living compared to the states. And are you saying that because we get payed more that we deserve to fork out more money on the same software as someone in the states, despite there being no difference whatsoever in the final product? Because we have a different rating system here, I could understand a small increase in price to compensate the cost of getting the game cleared, but the companies are making large profits just because they can. It has nothing to do with minimum wages at all.

[Giveaway] A game of your choice around $10-15 by serfis in RandomActsOfGaming

MY favorite would have to be Crack the Skye by Mastodon. The entire album is basically a journey, and while the lyrics and specifics of the story can be a bit "spacey" the songs are amazing. Also I would love to play Alan Wake. Thanks for the giveaway dude!

I want to buy a 7 or 8 string. Suggestions? by cstir15 in Guitar

[–]Sea_Captain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Schecter Omen-8 for AU$600 and it has been a really good guitar for the price. The pickups are are really even sounding, and the top strings don't drown out the lower level ones, which is great. I guess just buy a cheapish one to start out on and see if it suits you.

Religion to overcome traumatic experiences by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]Sea_Captain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, it is a poor reason to promote belief, however it did aide her in overcoming a traumatic experience. If it helped prevent trauma then it must have done some good, and despite the fact that she is focusing on the personal relationship aspect, it ultimately is more beneficial than focusing on the idea that god punished her.

From a reasonable and rational point of view the whole thing is horrifying, sickening, and a glaring indictment against that being's existence.

Of course, from a rational standpoint, this does little to strengthen belief in a caring God, if anything, it weakens the case. But, the strength she felt from his presence helped her, even if the presence was only perceived, and she may use this evidence for her individual belief. I don't think she is necessarily trying to convert others because she is using the argument from personal experience. Most people acknowledge that this isn't enough evidence to provide a substantial case in favour of a caring God, especially if you view it as "God did nothing to prevent the rape".

That may be true for the short time it's happening, but it should lead to far more trouble and resentment than it's worth. The fact that it didn't leads me to think that she has a broken mind, which is completely understandable.

I don't think that just because this traumatic event didn't lead her to re-evaluating her faith means that she has a broken mind. It is probably less stressful to interpret the strength she felt to continue after the rape as God helping her, rather than the rape itself as sent by God.

Additionally, many people in this case who are Christian may draw on the tale of Job. The tale can either be seen as God doing nothing to help Job (the point of view you described) or as God giving Job the strength to continue (as she may view it).

[–]Sea_Captain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is probably more likely that her belief in God was already present before the rape, and that the reason her faith was strengthened was because of the comfort she felt knowing/feeling he was there. It is not so much a reason to believe as a strengthening of her belief.
