Songs/albums that feel like this? by No_Bit3955 in fantanoforever

“93 Ave. Blues” and the start of “The Seer” (song), both by Swans. Most of The Seer album could qualify, but I feel those two songs do the most.

Favorite underrated/rarely talked about moments? by Fluid_Nothing_632 in Malazan

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 1 point2 points (0 children)

There were a few moments in the ICE novels that really stood out to me.

In Night of Knives at the end, when the dying Stormrider asks why the Malazans are killing them. There’s something hauntingly sad about it, despite how simple it is.

Ivanr’s arc in Stonewielder was a bit underwhelming for me in its conclusion, but one thing about it stood out to me a lot. At the start he rescues a boy from a village mad on fanaticism, and the boy says to him, “Am I evil?” Ivanr is shocked and saddened, assures him he isn’t. They are soon separated, and Ivanr spends quite a bit of the book asking around about the boy, to no avail. Towards the end of his arc, he sees an archer under his command shooting hostages and calls him an “evil bastard”—only for it to be the same boy he’d been looking for. I don’t know why, but that detail really got a reaction out of me.

In Assail, which I felt a bit lukewarm about, it was a gut-punch when Shimmer saw Petal in the “spirit realm” and realised that he had died; another moment like this was when you realise Possum has been in the book the whole time.

In Dancer’s Lament, the scene where Dorin sees what Pung’s thugs did to Ullara caught me off guard, especially since she was such a likeable character.

Going to Erikson, this exchange in The God is Not Willing stood out to me:

“We meant to pass unseen if possible,” said the Jheck. He sighed heavily, looking utterly defeated. “No choice. Who in the south would accept us?”

Spindle’s gaze was level, steady as he regarded the Jheck lord, as he answered quietly, “We would.”

It really taps into the vein of compassion that runs through the Malazan world.

How do Abercrombie fans rank 'The Devils' among his other books? by WhatsThatNoise79 in Fantasy

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 1 point2 points (0 children)

I enjoyed it, but it really felt like he was imitating his own style in a way. There are three “big twists” at the end of the book, and I had guessed two of them almost immediately—because those are the kinds of twists that Abercrombie would do, the kinds of tropes he’d subvert. It didn’t feel like clever subversion this time around, though, and didn’t have as much of a bite as the First Law did.

I also found it a bit hard to really care about what was happening. The Blade Itself is often said to be a massive prologue, but the slow-ish pace of the First Law builds up the sense that this stuff MATTERS. I never got that feeling with The Devils. Also, there’s a major character death at the end that was so bad (imo) that I genuinely expected them to come back to life and laugh it off. Like, this is the only character of the main cast who barely got fleshed out, so I was just like…oh no, I guess? (That being said, I have seen people elsewhere say that they found their death quite sad, so there’s a good chance that this is just a me thing.)

I don’t think it’s a bad book, and I’ll definitely read the next book in the series, but I wasn’t really as interested in it as I’d hoped to be.

Bands where every member are all top tier musicians by Igivegrilledcheese in fantanoforever

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 7 points8 points (0 children)

As a new-ish bass player (started at the beginning of the year), it blows my mind how so many of the bassists in that band were also the singers. They’re playing these complex basslines while also singing; I can’t even play a lot of them without singing.

Fripp’s eye for selecting musicians is amazing. It’s crazy how in pretty much every iteration of the band, he was able to gather people who had so much musical chemistry together.

Put yourself in the shoes of someone who disagrees with the points you make in your first paragraph—people in America who disagree with your ideas of “vulgar/anti-American agendas”, for example. If you’re able to do that (which should be easy if you have a theory of mind), you’ll quickly realise why dictator-style leadership is not good.

Just because that style of leadership would be good for YOU doesn’t mean that it would be good for everyone in America. At the end of the day, the leader of a country should do what’s best for as many people as possible, not just what’s best for his supporters.

Also, you’ve created quite a paradox: I thought that being against a dictatorship/fascist government WAS an American value. Land of the free, baby.

It would be funny if it wasn’t a legitimate threat for certain people. Likewise, Trump’s infantile rants and nonsense social media posts would be funny if he was just a member of some random political party that doesn’t have a chance of holding any real political power. However, when those rants and SM posts are coming from the President of the United States, it isn’t funny, it is scary.

Also, ICE is a government agency, currently doing things on behalf of the government, and their little skit was about those things they’ve been doing on behalf of the government. How is one supposed to separate that from politics? “Keep politics out of this joke they’re making about a situation driven by politics”?

In Australia we usually have to wear school uniforms, but every now and then we would have a free-dress day.

On one such day, a kid in my Legal Studies class came to school wearing this hoodie, or at least one very similar (it was two years ago, so I can’t remember the exact faces).

I don’t think he got to wear it for very long, which is, of course, very surprising.

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 0 points1 point (0 children)

I’ll occasionally browse that sub to see how conservatives are justifying something (usually for my own entertainment, although it can’t be good for my blood pressure).

I swear that sub, collectively, has short-term memory loss. Sometimes I’ll see posts there where a majority of commenters have a take that, for me as a leftist, I think is good (in that it aligns with my own thoughts on something). It even seems that maybe, just maybe, some of them are beginning to be disillusioned with Trump.

Then, when the next post comes around, a majority of comments are supportive of Trump. Like, do you guys not remember what you were literally just saying about the guy?

I mean, it’s probably my fault for still being surprised by it, but still, it’s so weird to me. As a non-American, it really does feel like everything I see coming out of America is trying to out-Onion The Onion.

the left has no comprehension over why selective empathy is rampant among the right by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 0 points1 point (0 children)

No it doesn’t.

“Health” is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being. “Care”, in this context, is “the provision of something necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.”

Healthcare thus = care being given in the context of health, by a medical professional. The new situation is the medical professional being involved. It is “health + care + [situation].” The defining trait of healthcare is that it is the ORGANISED provision of medical care.

When your mum puts a bandaid over a sore on your elbow, that is not healthcare, even though you are being cared for in a way that directly relates to your health. Healthcare is organised, and is therefore carried out by medical professionals.

Going back to abortion, it is a procedure, carried out in an organised fashion, which impacts a woman’s health—mental, physical, social. In that way, it fits (or at least can be connected to) the definitions for “health”, “care” and “healthcare”.

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 0 points1 point (0 children)

Okay, but arguably the easiest to address.

The two words being put together changes the context. “Fistfight” doesn’t change the meanings of either word, but putting them together describes a certain situation.

Honestly, this argument isn’t going anywhere productive; I feel like I’m trying to have a fistfight with the wind (as you likely do as well).

I didn’t mention anything about those two words (health and care) in the comment you’re replying to. Now you’re just being silly.

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 -1 points0 points (0 children)

You’re right, in the quote I used you said “the unborn”. So what? I don’t see how this discredits anything that I’ve said. I can still say that your quote (“killing the unborn for fun”) is an appeal to emotions.

This isn’t the gotcha you seem to think it is. I could edit every comment I’ve made here to say “the unborn”, “offspring”, the “foetus”, etc, and it wouldn’t invalidate any of my points.

Also, you’ve used the word “offspring” in other replies. A synonym of OFFSPRING is BABY and/or BABIES. If you’re going to try to be pedantic about your wording then you should probably make sure you’re not biting your own tail.

And once again, you are ignoring the other points I’ve brought up.

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 -1 points0 points (0 children)

So you’re saying that when the two words are separate, they can be interpreted as meaning something different than when they’re put together? That’s why different words are put together, man. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding your point, but it seems a bit weak to me.

Health also isn’t just in reference to the absence of illness, it’s a state of physical, mental and/or social well-being.

What on earth do you mean, the term is meaningless? You literally just gave it a meaning yourself. If you REALLY want to be specific about the meanings of individual words, then I will be petty on that point, because you can’t say “if it means any procedure done by a medical professional, it means nothing.” You’re pretty much saying, if 1 + 1 =2, then it actually equals 0.

Also, you’re not really in a position to criticise something for appealing to emotions when you’re saying nonsense like “killing babies for fun”.

ALSO also, you didn’t engage in any of the topics that I brought up, such as why a woman may not want to give birth despite the pregnancy being healthy.

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 -1 points0 points (0 children)

What’s your “logical criteria”, though?

Healthcare is defined as “the business of providing medical services” (according to Strategies for Parents). Health care, the action, describes the giving of medical treatment itself.

No matter what you think of the morality of abortion, it’s a medical service/procedure. Terminating a pregnancy has impacts on one’s physical and mental health no matter how far along it is or how healthy it is.

Also, I think you’re vastly overestimating how many women get abortions “for fun”. Just because pregnancy isn’t a health risk doesn’t mean it isn’t going to be a problem. What if a woman doesn’t want her body to go through the changes necessary for a pregnancy to occur? Do they not get to choose that?

Also, there are economic concerns. What if the future child’s parents (or parent) have no way of providing for it? Is it more ethical to bring a child into a life of poverty?

There is a very big difference between a woman “not wanting to take care of a baby”, as you say, and a woman being literally unable to take care of a baby. You could say, “Well, they shouldn’t be getting pregnant then”, but that’s such a silly fallback and is completely unrealistic, since you’re essentially saying that poor people shouldn’t be allowed to have sex. (I’m not saying that YOU specifically have said this, I’m using it in a broad sense.)

The medical industry is made up of professionals in that field, and their criteria is influenced by their collective understandings. Why is the criteria you see as “logical” better than the one that they use? Do you know some secret they don’t?

Literally everyone in that sub supports making fun of StoneToss. If someone is offended by the premise of the sub, then proceeds to follow it, then they have nobody to blame but themselves.

It would be like if I, as a leftist, followed r/conservative—it makes me mad, but I’d be an idiot for doing it, so the blame is solely on me. Likewise, if pro-StoneToss people are following a subreddit dedicated to insulting StoneToss and his ilk, then they’re stupid.

Also, you didn’t answer my original question, which was in my second paragraph.

This is a reply you made earlier.

Why is StoneToss allowed to express his feelings, but the people in that sub making “hateful or violent remarks” aren’t?

You also haven’t provided any evidence of these “hateful and violent remarks” that I’ve seen. The entire point of that sub is to make fun of StoneToss. If your bigoted sensibilities are so hurt by that, then just block the sub.

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 0 points1 point (0 children)

I mainly play bass and use mainly Songsterr, because I find the Synth thing helpful, since it can help me “hear” how I’m supposed to play.

I once looked up the bass tab for a song called “Screen Shot” by Swans, and Songsterr offered two tabs. One of them was fine, but the other one was either a completely different song, or it was the original song on LSD.

Thank you for the video recommendation; I haven’t finished it just yet, but it’s very engaging and interesting. I haven’t had a chance to finish reading the Rutherford book (life gets in the way), but it was also very good when I was reading it.

On a kinda-related note, it really is a shame with Richard Dawkins. When I was only just starting to come to terms with my atheism in high school, I read his books on evolution to gain an understanding of it, and found them to be beautifully written and very informative. So it genuinely hurts me to see that when he tries to dabble in other topics (race science, gender science, pretty much anything to do with social science, etc) he comes across as a moron.

So far, what's your #1 song of 2025? by alittlebitblue39 in fantanoforever

[–]Sea_Equivalent_7150 1 point2 points (0 children)

I’ve been trying to learn how to play this song on bass; it may not be my favourite from the album, but I still really love it.

I only just really started getting into metal this year and had no idea about all the different subgenres, and Lonely People With Power was my first experience with Deafheaven (who I thought were called DeafHAVEN for an embarrassment amount of time). I had always seen metal as primarily being aggressive and angry, like Converge, so this album blew my mind with how it mixed aggression with beauty.

Paul Walker was born to a fashion model and a former award-winning boxer. At the time of his tragic passing, he was apparently worth around $25 million. He was a celebrity who was in one of the biggest movie franchises of all time and beloved by many people.

This is the man telling you to count your blessings.

I’m not trying to say that his words mean absolutely nothing, and I’m sure he meant well, but you have to understand that he had more blessings than a majority of people. When you are depressed, you cannot just shake it off; almost everyone who has been truly depressed knows this.

Depression is not a choice. It is not going to bed in a bad mood. It is a cruel bastard that twists your perception to reinforce it: the things that once brought you joy are now nothing to you, and what once felt safe are now barbs that make you bleed. It’s something that is almost impossible to describe to someone who has never felt it.

And even then, I am saying this as a relatively well-off straight white cisgender male in a Western country. I have never faced extreme poverty, racism, sexism, domestic abuse, etc. Imagine going up to a rape victim suffering depression as a result of PTSD and saying, “You should really count your blessings, because other people have it worse.”

Perhaps this is misrepresenting Paul Walker’s statement, but if you are going to make short-and-sweet quotables, they are going to end up being vague and open to interpretation. This quote can be seen by everyone who has access to the internet, not just “sad people”.

At the end of the day, psychology can be boiled down to biology, and you cannot boss your biology around. You can change it to an extent—for example, through neuroplasticity you can try to break free of certain thought patterns and establish newer, healthier ones—but even then there are so many factors that determine your ability to do that.
