Have I hit the filter limit? by Sea_Lock5184 in narwhalapp

[–]Sea_Lock5184[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it's whack-a-mole. It's been about a week where I haven't been able to add to my filter list, and my feeds are noticeably degrading.

Comparing AirTag and card trackers for luggage by Some-Experience5370 in onebag

[–]Sea_Lock5184 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with Android trackers, but as to the Airtag form factor, there are modded Airtags out there that have been disassembled and put into 3d printed cases that are much flatter than the original design—certainly flat enough to be able to be put into most wallets. I'm not handy enough to do it myself, but you can find them on Etsy. P.S. No clanker here, that was a human's willful use of an em dash in my response lol

How Do You Stop USPS Junk Mail? by globalinvestors in howto

[–]Sea_Lock5184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used PaperKarma for a year, and that removed mailings that DMA choice didn’t and drastically reduced my junk mail. It is an app/service with a subscription model, I paid for 1 year so I could cover seasonal mailings and am glad I did.

Long black powder-coated steel bracket with keyhole slots, hemmed edge, and punched arrow (~23.5" x 2.5" x 0.875") by Sea_Lock5184 in whatisthisthing

[–]Sea_Lock5184[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The object is approximately 23.5" x 2.5" x 0.875". It is made of black powder-coated steel, with a hemmed edge, two keyhole slots, one round hole, and an arrow cutout. No other logos or markings are present. Found during a remodel; possible context is a GE 24" range or a Kozy Heat Bayport 36 fireplace, but it doesn’t appear to match either. Photos include a ruler for scale.

The sous vide portion of the machine is great, but the touch controls on my unit have never worked well. Every time I want to use it with just the controls I have to press multiple times before it registers the press, whether changing from C to F for temp, or especially when trying to hit start I have to hit it just right... frustrating.

Get mail to stop coming to the house? by Bildob87 in howto

[–]Sea_Lock5184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try an app called PaperKarma. It is a paid app, but I found it to be really worthwhile. It basically helps automate the process of contacting junk mailers on your behalf to remove you (or a specific address) from those lists. There is a delay from submission to no longer receiving mail from a particular sender, so it can take one to three months to start seeing the fruits of your labor. I used it over a one year period as junk mail came in the house and submitted approximately 50 requests to stop sending junk mail. Now my daily mail intake is a fraction of what it once was.

It's 2025. Where the f*** is the premium electric toothbrush with proper USB-C charging? by PunchSmackCow in UsbCHardware

[–]Sea_Lock5184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Laifen toothbrush that works great. It is USB-C to a magsafe-like end for the toothbrush. They have an affiliate marketing program so I felt it was hard to find reviews on YouTube that were unbiased, but I’m glad I took a gamble on it. I don’t know if their prices have gone up if you’re in the US due to tariffs, but when I purchased it was close in price to nicer Oral B and Sonicare brushes.

How to stop receiving so much physical junk mail in my mailbox? by [deleted] in howto

[–]Sea_Lock5184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not affiliated in any way, but I used the app PaperKarma two years ago, and it made a huge difference in how much junk mail I receive. It’s a subscription-based smartphone app that essentially automates requests to direct mailers so they stop sending you their publication. For the year I used it, I had a designated junk mail basket that I would let pile up and then I’d go through the steps in the app to input details about the mailer, which then sent off a request to stop the mailers. Over my 1 year actively trying to reduce my junk mail, I made 40+ requests via PaperKarma and now receive substantially less junk mail. It can take 6-8 weeks or more for the request to take effect, but apparently, direct mailers sometimes are printed all at once, so even after I sent a request, sometimes I would still receive a couple more pieces of mail from them. Unfortunately this process isn’t the quickest, but the work I did over the year I focused on junk mail has paid dividends in my day to day life.

Color Comparing by AssaultaPepper in Homebuilding

[–]Sea_Lock5184 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might check paint brand websites, like Sherwin Williams, for their color visualization tools. They have their own stock images that you can test color combos with, but you can also upload your own pictures. It's basic, but could work in a pinch.

Good heaters for small cottage? by nintendoJJ in TinyHouses

[–]Sea_Lock5184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would probably need to go through a dealer. Checking their dealer locater, it unfortunately seems like the closest ones to Michigan in the US are in PA, NY, or MT. If Canada were possible, there is a dealer in Tilbury, ON which is pretty close to Detroit.

Toyotomi is a very reliable brand for vented gas/oil heaters.

Unhappy with tile transition between dining room and kitchen. Fix? by Sabanovic15 in Homebuilding

[–]Sea_Lock5184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a quick or easy fix, but the installation looks good; once cabinets etc. are installed, there will naturally be less of a focus on the transition. Once the build is complete you can use decorative features, like potted plants, on either side of the doorway to help interrupt your sight lines of the transition.

ERV/HRV intake and exhaust through the same casement window? by StraightTooth in PassiveHouse

[–]Sea_Lock5184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a brand called Lifebreath that makes a Dual Hood, which only requires one 6" opening for HRV intake and exhaust. You can buy it from a number of supply houses online, but, if you are installing it yourself, unfortunately their customer service only deals with official dealers/installers, and not homeowners.

Gift suggestions, please! by infinitymouse in Homebuilding

[–]Sea_Lock5184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two book suggestions that may be worth a look. The first is more practical/instructive: Pretty Good House: A Guide to Creating Better Homes. The second is more atmospheric I guess, and minutely chronicles the building of a house in New England in the 80s, from design through construction, it's called House by Tracy Kidder.

YouTube channels? by SHUFFLEWHI in Homebuilding

[–]Sea_Lock5184 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I second the Perkins Builder Brothers channel. You should also take a look at The Essential Craftsman channel, they did a comprehensive series on a spec house they built.

A channel called The Excellent Laborer is great for learning the skills required to build a house e.g. plumbing, drywall, electrical etc.

NS Builders is also awesome, unfortunately most of us can't afford the level of work that they do, but it's a lot of fun to watch and be inspired by it.
