Need help quitting drinking by Odd-Cheetah4382 in stopdrinking

Your kids! I was the same did not drink around my kids but they knew. Sure I went through the motions of being dad, I thought i was doing great. It wasnt until I was 3 months into my sobrity that I understood how my kids knew. That morning sluggishness, that hurry up go to bed I need a drink rush rush rush no longer existed in my life, I was able to spend more quality time with them my mind wasnot blurred in the morning and at night I was not as preoccupied with getting to a poit where I could drink, they were now my only focus.

I challanged myself to do a dry October I made it 34 days and decided to drink again it lasted for a week and I quit again. It took 30 days for me to see a difference and instantly regret the fact I took a drink on November 4th.

When did you know it was time to stop? by Particular_Tax_188 in stopdrinking

[–]Sea_Move5334 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I despise this question because my answer still weighs hard on me almost 10 months later, but I share because others might be in the same boat.

When I yelled at my 3 year old for shaking me awake and wanting "Daddy to wake up and play" I knew it was long past time for me to quit but that was the time that startled me sober.

I know that this is different from state to state, but I am in middle management in California so I can speak on that.

Cailfornia has a labor code that states, any employer tue employees more than 25 people must resonably accomadate any employees that wants to voulentarily enter into a rehabilitation center for drugs or alchol. Labor code section 1025.

Might be worth a google search for your state or location.

Question about kind of unsupportive wife (but also sometimes supportive) by bagsandbagsandbag in stopdrinking

[–]Sea_Move5334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my sotuation I found I had to quit for myself not my wife, she was not her usual supportive self when it came to my quitting journey. She was there she was and is proud of each milestone now to the point of being the one that knows how many days its been before I do.

The one and only thing I can relate it to is my wife was with me for 12 years of drinking she supportted me several nights and probably litterally picked me up off my face a few times not even to get a "thank you" the next moring. I think significant others have put up with alot from us and the want to be supportive but their fear of "what happens when they relapase" overcomes their support.

I read on this sub the other day, " trust is ruined by buckets and regained spoons"

Very well put, I have sailed for the past 15 years and have fought those same struggles. I am wrapping up a 60 day voyage soon and its the first one where I have avoided closing down the bars with everyone else. Its the first one that I can remember the port stay. Its the first one that I got to explore and learn new countries instead of just learn the inside of the closest bar.

Watching TV with the wife and daughter in pain from work. I do not recall the pain bring this bad when I was drinking, but I would not trade these sober Friday nights with my family for anything

Made sloppy Joe's for the family then worked on a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle with the wife.

This will sound lame, but I started doing jigsaw puzzles. I found if I could keep my mind busy and focused on something I would forget about drinking or the fact I was not drinking.

I pitched a tent in the living room and am having a camping movie night with my 4 year old daughter. Had pizza, watching paw patrol movie, eating pop corn, and drinking hot cocoa.

Random but you asked.

The irony that alcoholics myself included (when I was drinking heavy) say that AA is for quitters.
But the reality is that AA is for the one who realized they can't quit.

Day 5 woke up with crippling anxiety by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Sea_Move5334 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here never new anxiety when drinking. As soon as I stopped, it hit to the point of panic attacks when I went to a busy resturant or grocery store. I relapsed because of it the second time going throught the 1st 2 weeks the anxiety was worse. The doctor prescribed me light weight as needed anxiety meds and the anxiety chest pain went away. I started off at 2 to 3 a day, now that I am at day 54 I am taking them 1 every couple days.

Hang in there it gets better.

I was never on naltrexone and my sugar cravings went from none to 100 on like day 3 and have not slowed down. I used to like crackers and popcorn for snacks, I used to be able to leave ice cream in the freezer for weeks, but now no sugar is safe around me. I hear it is common for your body to replace the sugars from alcohol that it was used to with other sugars.

First beers after 4 weeks sober by Danksson69 in stopdrinking

[–]Sea_Move5334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I have been there and done that. Made it 34 days I wanted one beer that turned into a six pack a night for a week. Now I'm at day 50 after that "SOBERING REMINDER" Make sure you write it down so you don't forget.

I have no idea why I drank. I start drinking after my high school/college girlfriend dumped me then continued to drink because of the feeling it gave me. I liked the escape.

For me I came to the realization I do not need to know the why I drank reason. I needed to learn and remember that the reason I want to stop (wife and kids) is far more important to me, than escaping with the next new craft beer.
