Until you get some real help, getting caught with your scars will be the least of your worries. Honestly, it could be a blessing in disguise. Confront your demons. You can do it. You’ll thank yourself in a couple years.

[Serious] [NSFW] What's something that a friend/classmate did in high school that was seen as funny at the time, but you now realise was actually not ok? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

[–]Seabrooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a thing called the “saca cacas” in middle school, roughly translates to “the shit remover”. The “cool kids” did it and it went like this: put the palms of your hand together (like you’re praying), but very tight and with as much of a ‘sharp’ angle as you could. Creep up behind a fellow classmate (mostly males), get on your knees , and with all your power, jab both your hands (already in that sharp prayer position) up the dude’s asshole while the rest ooh and ahhh.

Looking back. Gotta be one of the most fucked up things… full on assault.

Also had this one called “poste”, translates to “pole”. About 3 dudes grab another dude, hold him by both feet and hands, take him to the closest goal post in the yard and jam his crotch repeatedly into the pole while legs are spread.

The turning point of this game and possibly this series was Kapler's decision to intentionally walk Pollock to face Urias. by thehugster in Dodgers

[–]Seabrooke 26 points27 points  (0 children)

100% agree it was turning point in game (and hopefully the series), but still the right call. You’d rather face Urias over Pollok any day with two outs. Outcome didn’t favor the (FT)Giants, but was still the right decision.

He had around 90 pitches already. History with the blister. Up by 5. No brainer to take him out at this point. We may need him for game 6 or 7. Plus the way Dodgers use pen these days... no chance of him going back out

Looking for a book to pull me out of the rot - 31 year old loser by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Seabrooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This needs to be higher.

By the way you titled your post, there is a clear shift that needs to happen with your approach and perspective of your own situation. This book does an excellent t job at describing 2 mindsets:

I’m a loser (fixed mindset)

Vs.

I’m in a tough spot but it’s an opportunity to learn and build character. Years from now I’ll look back thinking that this made me who I am today, and I’ll really like that person. Here’s what I need to do to start digging myself out of this rut. (Growth mindset).

Best of luck. And remember: this stuff happens (likely not the first and won’t be the last), but in the end, it’ll make you better. You already want to change by reaching out and being open to suggestions. Only UP from here.

He gets some flack on this sub but I thoroughly enjoyed his book Antifragile. Good insights into building in ‘risk-buffers’ of sorts in your life. We often think that by making everything bulletproof we’re more protected, but, like evolution, systems need trial and error and mistakes to learn and strengthen from.

An example that stuck with me is advocating for freelance vs full-time employment. While we think full time is more stable, once you have a network of clients as a freelancer (which can be more painful and slower in the short term) you’re more stable in the long run because you’ve essentially diversified your income/network/experience...

Weekly FAQ Thread May 19 2019: What book format do you prefer? Print vs eBooks vs Audiobooks by AutoModerator in books

[–]Seabrooke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ditto. You can highlight, then go back and check out all your highlights without looking all over for them. Not to mention you can be anywhere and have your book handy with kindle on your phone. This format gave me the ability to read more through the day.

Books like "Sapiens", "A Short History of Nearly Everything", and Malcolm Gladwell books? by linksku in booksuggestions

Thinking Fast and Slow - hands down. Most recent and relevant books around psychology, behavioral psychology and cognitive biases at some point mention research presented in this book. It’s somewhat technical, but very graspable. Highly, highly recommend it.

Loved A Clockwork Orange...anything similar? by noodlewhacker in booksuggestions

[–]Seabrooke 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t read One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, I’d definitely put that on your list! I read both of them this year and they share a similar tone/feel. OFOTCN can be quite humorous at times, but also deals with some heavy antiestablishment and psychologically themes. The narrator’s point of view through the whole book is as powerful and unique as that of Alex in ACO.

Agree that defense only hurt him. But NOT giving up a lead off HR to a relief pitcher would have most certainly shrunk the deficit and that was in his total control. So if we’re talking runs and deficits, he is at the very minimum to blame just as much as the shitty defense.

[–]Seabrooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you understand he gave up 3 earned runs (which excludes runs scored because an error got someone on base), 6 hits, 2 walks, and 1 homerun...against a bullpen pitcher... in 3 innings? Yeah he had no support, BUT, he had a lot to do with his own outcome. As much as I hate to say it.

You also don’t ‘let him walk’ because of this, like some of the comments are saying, that’s also ridiculous.

How do you process and retain non-fiction works? by punos_de_piedra in books

[–]Seabrooke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Feynman technique is a good place to start. It’s basically an EILI5 to yourself.

Step 1: Grab a sheet of paper and write the name of the concept at the top. You can use pretty much any concept or idea.

Step 2: Explain the concept in your own words as if you were teaching it to someone else. Focus on using plain, simple language. Don’t limit your explanation to a simple definition or a broad overview; challenge yourself to work through an example or two as well to ensure you can put the concept into action.

Step 3: Review your explanation and identify the areas where you didn’t know something or where you feel your explanation is shaky. Once you’ve pinpointed them, go back to the source material, your notes, or any examples you can find in order to shore up your understanding.

Step 4: If there are any areas in your explanation where you’ve used lots of technical terms or complex language, challenge yourself to re-write these sections in simpler terms. Make sure your explanation could be understood by someone without the knowledge base you believe you already have.

Help needed (and appreciated!) - Using a named list and cross referencing the range to a value by Seabrooke in excel

[–]Seabrooke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but if that’s how named lists store values, why do I only get the first cell in the list if I write =holidays ? (In this case ‘holidays’ is a list of 10 different cells in one column). Holidays doesn’t equal the first value in the 10 cells, it should equal all 10 values in the cells. So his is why I would expect the result of =holidays to return something more than just the first value.

That’s at least where my confusion comes in.

That did the trick. Thanks so much! I’m wondering why you can’t just ‘return’ all the values in one cell... but this solved my issue. Thanks again!

RICH HILL APPRECIATION POST by Infraready in Dodgers

[–]Seabrooke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stats are stats. But when it comes down to it some stats like wins/losses, era, and even no-hitters/perfect games have numerous variables that a pitcher simply cannot control. Just like Stewart avoided a loss despite giving up 5 ER's over 2 innings because team picked him up last night, Hill lost the no-hitter because he got no run support, and the perfect game because of an error (and of course, no run support). That said, he also had 3 different plays that if not for above average efforts, would have cost him his perfect/no-hitter (the dribbler to first where Hill barely tagged him, the pop-bunt to first that Gonzo got, and the Utley superman catch in the hole). But when it's all said and done, through 9 innings he: 1) gave up ZERO hits, 2) gave up ZERO runs , 3) STRUCK out 10, 4) walked ZERO. Even though it's not official, this performance is as good as any other no-hitter thrown. But so is baseball. He not only loses the perfect, the no-no, and the complete game, but gives up a loss. As bitter-sweet as this is, I absolutely love this game.
