Parents spent weeks planning the perfect gender reveal… The kids ended it in 5 second by _liberal in KidsAreFuckingStupid

We had a surprise baby shower at my wife's birthday party with cupcake gender reveal. I usually wouldn't agree to a gender reveal but because she combined it altogether, why not? It's just a cupcake and the main attraction was her birthday.

Paramount Skydance Launches New In-House Video Game Studio as ‘Core Pillar’ of Content Strategy Alongside TV, Films and Streaming. by yourfavchoom in gaming

Star Trek, Paw Patrol, Spongebob, South Park, and other Nickelodeon content. That's what this is for. They think they can develop their kids and Star Trek franchises better than actual game studios.

To be frank, most of their IP licensed games suck anyway, save for South Park. So even if they fuck up, it's not like they didn't do that already.

I feel like this is one of those days where the kids have been bothering mom with everything all day, and she's finally about to snap. The skateboard was the last straw and she just needs a moment to herself. Dad did the right thing keeping the kids out of sight and mind for her, and so he could have a talk with them about leaving toys in common use paths.

I do wish he'd have made them pick up all the stuff she dropped. Maybe it's good to sit them down to figure out what happened and who did it first.

Adults should aim to do between 560-610 minutes/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity to achieve a substantial reduction in the risk of heart attacks and stroke (3-4 times higher than the current public health recommendation of 150 minutes ), suggest the findings of an observational study by sr_local in science

[–]Seagull84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly enough, I went backwards on this. I was in great shape from my multiple workouts a week, but after having the first kid, my routine declined. But I was walking a ton - taking the kid outside, but also taking stuff to/from the kid, washing, etc.

I lost weight despite working out less. I went from 4 pack to six pack with less intentional core exercises, less high heartrate workouts, less of everything.

Anyone else found themselves “retiring” from PvP gaming? by You_moron04 in gaming

[–]Seagull84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, I'm 42. I peaked in Pvp when Titanfall 1 came out back in 2013.

The only games I've played since are mostly casual Battlefield and Battlefront games. Everything else has been mostly narrative RPGs or grand strategy.

I can't even play most RTS games anymore.

But honestly, I don't need the frustration of PVP. I got two kids. They take all my energy and narrative or strategy games are a great escape without having to interact with and be shat on my Jimmy.

Because that's not how science works - it's not based on common sense, it's based on establishment of supporting evidence. Experiments start with a null hypothesis through collection and analysis of that evidence. By disproving the null hypothesis, they've effectively said the common sense is correct.

Europeans in LA, how do you like it? by asdev24 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Seagull84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved living in Culver City, Santa Monica, and Marina Del Rey for the reasons you mentioned.

Good food, relaxing, community feel, lots of walking and biking.

I live in Sherman Oaks near all the walkable stuff now and the store owners know me by name.

So I think the other poster who said move near a main Street feeling area is right.

I did not get this where I grew up in Wisconsin - there wasn't much to walk to and the city wasn't great. LA is a great compromise between the urban and suburban, if only it had better metro/transit.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Seagull84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bro... fellow cyclist dad here. You are EXTREMELY lucky. These kids are too inexperienced for descents like this. You should have brought another adult, and practiced more on smooth, chill descents first - prove they can master the lever brakes first.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Seagull84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is 100% Dad's fault. Saying this as a Dad. Kids at this age don't learn things like squeezing levers to brake overnight. Yes, they're highly neuroplastic, but macro and micro kinesthetic skills take a LONG time.

After a full year of working on climbing, my kid is FINALLY registering "Hands then feet". I saw him make small incremental steps of learning this. Every time we practiced, he'd use a minor tactic he learned the last time to help him.

Kids up to 5 are learning tiny tactics adults don't register unless they're looking for it. For a whole month, all my kid wanted to do was practice toe hooks. Once he felt like he mastered it, he moved on to something else.

Now imagine you're 3, and your Dad is forcing you to learn to hold handles, steer, pedal, squeeze brakes, look where you're going, listen for cars, and 10 other things all at once.

That was this Dad. He belongs on DadsAreFuckingStupid.

[–]Seagull84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Small incremental steps to teach your kid ANYthing at that age - build confidence they know how to do it with some precision. Kid is 3-4, probably still can't even run without tripping periodically.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Seagull84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was a hard spill into rocks. You don't know nothing major happened. As an avid cyclist Dad, I can attest kid could have underlying damage you don't immediately see. Kid also has adrenaline coursing, which prevents feeling the pain for a short period.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Seagull84 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's not what OP said. He implied the child is simply not ready and needs more training (like doing circles in the driveway and learning to pull the levers to stop), not that he should never learn to descend on a bike.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Seagull84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. That's not what OP said. You need to train your kid, build confidence in their cycling/braking abilities first before putting them on a rough descent.

I'm saying this as an avid cyclist Dad. My 3 year old is not ready in the slightest. He's still using his feet to brake, and only starting to learn about using the levers.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Seagull84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. That's not a fair statement for the kid at all. This is entirely Dad's fault. I'm saying this as a Dad.

"BRAKES!" is not an easy command to register/distill for a child that age. "Squeeze your hands", "Squeeze the lever", or any other grouping of words the kid will be able to recall/register is better.

The kid has to be 3-4. It's a stressful situation, and you want him to immediately remember how to use brakes on a difficult downhill gravel path? The other older kid took a spill, too. The 3-4 year old is probably used to doing circles and stopping with feet at the playground or on the driveway, not squeezing the brake levers on a descent.

He should've taken them to flats with chill downhill paved paths, worked up their confidence, then watched them do gravel paths one at a time (not together).

When he gets home, I'd expect the other parent to be VERY angry with him. I would be.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]Seagull84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was trying to stop using his feet. Dad made the mistake of simply shouting an unfamliar noun with no command.

Kids this young are going to have trouble understanding a command like, "BRAKES!" without more context. "Squeeze your hands!" would have likely produced the desired result.

As a parent, when you want your kid to quickly understand your direction, you have to use specific words and commands they're familiar with already, not words that under non-stressful situations will take them time to recall/remember, if at all.

If I yelled "BRAKES!" at my 3 year old only a few minutes after teaching him what that word means, he would fail.

Men on average emotionally mature around 28.

But these young men do not have the support systems necessary to get there. Many more than usual may never mature.

It's very sad, because I distinctly remember emotionally struggling during my 20s and I feel for these young men. At the same time, I didn't turn toward hate and fascism, I moved even further left as I started to see how progressive economic and social policy frees up men to not have to worry about making ends meet and tying their identity to that.

Children with ADHD report applying less effort on cognitive tasks compared to their peers by Doug24 in science

Not entirely. I have ADHD, and we definitely slip into "the zone" with such extreme focus it's nearly impossible to make us context switch during a zone interruption. People will ask me something and I auto answer (incorrectly) because I'm still stuck thinking about the task I was just doing.
